Steve Hughes

Steve Hughes is the Director of Policy Points. His entire career has been spent either designing, implementing or scrutinising public policy. As Head of Economic and Social Policy for Britain's leading think tank, Policy Exchange, Steve published several influential reports. The subjects of his studies included youth unemployment and the devolution agenda, managing welfare expenditure and increasing household saving. Some of his recommendations were included in the political party manifestos ahead of the 2015 general election. At the Bank of England Steve conducted research into the circulation of banknotes, modelled the cost/benefit of introducing polymer currency and helped to manage the regulatory system that governs cash distribution in the UK. Prior to this he produced economic indicators for the British Chambers of Commerce and worked in Parliament briefing politicians on draft legislation, mostly related to financial services regulation. The areas of policy that he has focused on during his career include the labour market, the devolution agenda, business tax and access to finance, international trade, the macroeconomy and industrial strategy. ​
