Ann Timms

My name is Ann and I joined MLA as a Programme Administrator (Partnerships) in July 2022. My primary role will be supporting the Head of Programme Services. Though I am new to the education sector, I have had several years' experience in customer services and administrative duties. In April 2014 I decided to enrol in a BA Leadership and Management degree, so I can totally empathise with our students the stress and difficulties in learning and completing modules and essays whilst working. I graduated in October 2018 with Hons and a certificate in Professional Management, and I hope my experience will help our students with their journey.

Brian Gamet

Job Titles:
  • Associate Lecturers
Hi, I'm Brian and after a fantastically varied and interesting 11 year career as a hydrographic surveyor, I'm absolutely delighted to now be a part of the MLA team as a lecturer and trainer in the subject that I love. My passion for the sea began shortly after leaving school with a short stint in the Royal Navy, where I was fortunate to learn how to sail, which despite having being raised in the Lake District was an entirely new experience. On leaving the service I spent a couple of years qualifying as a Yachtmaster and sailing vessels across a few oceans and seas, with only the one Mayday and subsequent rescue! The art of navigating from charts inspired a desire to gain a greater understanding into the compilation of these pieces of paper that contain so much information and are ultimately responsible for the safe passage of mariners. What followed was 4 years of study where I gained a BSc in Marine Science and an MSc with "Cat A" accreditation in Hydrography. In my 11 years as a hydrographic surveyor I have worked in some very interesting places and with some fantastic people who have taught me a great deal about hydrography. It is this experience and knowledge gained that I am keen to pass on to students engaged on our distance learning packages, which in my opinion are at the leading edge of educational offerings in hydrography globally.

My background is in the environmental sciences. I was lucky enough to attend a week long residential field course whilst at school, and this made me realise that I could combine my love of physical geography and science, with my nerdy fascination for data, numbers, statistics and maps. Because of that, fieldwork, labwork, and data analysis has always held an especially important place in my teaching. My first degree was in terrestrial environmental science at Lancaster. I then moved on to take up a PhD opportunity in marine science at the University of Cardiff. To be honest, it was the offer of five weeks on a research ship that probably made my mind up for me, and, as I hail from a place in the UK that is possibly the furthest one can get from the sea, I thought this would be an adventure! Hello. My name is Paul Wright. I have been involved in the international shipping industry for over 50 years. In 1962 at the age of 13, I entered HMS ‘Conway' a Merchant Navy Training School located on the shores of the Menai Straits in Anglesey. In my final year I was promoted to the position of Senior Cadet Captain and was a nominee for the Queen's Gold Medal. On being awarded a Passing Out Certificate in 1965 which entitled me to 12 months remission of sea service, I left the school and joined the highly respected Blue Funnel Line (later to become Ocean Fleets) of Liverpool as an apprentice Deck Officer. On completion of my apprenticeship, I served as a deck officer on a variety of ships managed by Ocean Fleets including general cargo vessels, car ferries and passenger liners. The ships served between Europe and the Far East and West Africa. I also worked for a short time on research vessels of the Natural Environmental Research Council. Between 1976 and 1979 I served on ships of Overseas Containers Ltd, a British company at the vanguard of the container shipping revolution.
