Alan Clark

Alan (BA, Hamilton College) is a Ph.D. student in the Media, Technology & Society program. He completed his undergraduate degree in Communication and has been working in the lab since the summer of 2008. Alan is interested in dynamics of collaboration in shared space, social dimensions and communicative uses of augmented reality, and in developing novel methods for studying language processes in naturalistic conversation.

Bennett Hensey

Job Titles:

Bennett Hensey is a sophomore studying Manufacturing and Design Engineering, with plans to pursue a mixed education in psychology, computer science, and entrepreneurship. His interests lie in learning to better understand people and the interactions they have with the tools they use. Bennett is currently working with Jim Maddock at CollabLab to analyze differences in collaboration dynamics across different wikipedia language communities.

Brent Hecht

Brent (BA, Macalester College; MA, University of California, Santa Barbara) is a Ph.D. student in Computer Science. He recently completed his Masters in Geography. He is expanding beyond all that is spatial, although he still interested in the analogies that space can provide. His main fascinations currently include information retrieval, natural language processing, data exploration, and information visualization. When not being an academe, Brent enjoys country music, traveling, and learning random things about the world.

Brian Keegan

Brian (BS, Massachusetts Institute of Technology) is a Ph.D. student in the Media, Technology & Society program. He completed his undergraduate degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Science and Technology Studies, and joined the lab in 2007. His current research interests are in group dynamics and organizational processes in computer-mediated collaborative communities. He uses methods in social network analysis and agent-based modeling to understand decision-making, consensus-formation, gate-keeping, and other social influence phenomena in environments like Wikipedia and MMOGS.

Darren Gergle

Darren (Ph.D., Carnegie Mellon University) is the director of the CollabLab and is a faculty member in Communication Studies and Electrical Engineering & Computer Science at Northwestern University. He also directs the Mobile Tracking Laboratory. Darren is broadly interested in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Computer-Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) and Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC). His research program focuses on developing a theoretical understanding of the role that technology plays in supporting group interaction, and using this understanding, in turn, to develop innovative technologies to support group interaction.

Jim Maddock

Jim Maddock is a second year Ph.D. student in the Technology and Social Behavior program at Northwestern University, where he works with Darren Gergle to explore online peer production and collective action community dynamics. He completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Washington, working extensively with Kate Starbird on crisis informatics projects. When he's not thinking about research, Jim is likely riding one of his four bicycles.

Jordan Davison

Jordan (BS, UC San Diego; MA, UT Austin) is a research assistant in the CollabLab. She completed her undergraduate degree in Cognitive Science, her graduate degree in Psychology, and joined the lab in the Fall of 2013. She is interested in the social and cognitive resources required to establish and maintain common ground in face to face interaction.

Jordana Graifman

Jordana is a senior communication studies major and business institutions minor. She also completed the digital media module. Jordana previously worked at the Web Use Project and is a member of the School of Communication Dean's Advisory Council.

Marcia Hilliard

Job Titles:

Marcia Hilliard's grandmother, Georgianna Verville, graduated from the Northwestern University College of Liberal Arts in 1930 with a Bachelor of Science degree. Marcia knew that she had returned home when she agreed to work at NU in 1997. Marcia has served in various roles within the university, from Department Assistant in the McCormick School of Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering for six years, to most recently Assistant Research Administrator for more than seven years at the NU Center for Quality Engineering, within the Mechanical Engineering Department. She currently is contributing her expertise as the Lab Coordinator to the CollabLab and the Social Media Lab.

Mark Diaz

Mark is a PhD student in the Technology and Social Behavior Program. He received his BA in Science, Technology, and Society from Stanford University where he researched human behavior in virtual reality. Mark is interested in interpersonal communication involving underrepresented minorities as well as finding ways to encourage and support prosocial behavior.

Noah Liebman

Noah (BSE, MSI, University of Michigan) is a Ph.D. student in Technology & Social Behavior. He earned his Masters in Human Computer Interaction after studying electrical engineering, and joined the CollabLab in 2011. He is interested in social norms in mediated communication, and the individual and collective implications of communication technology.

Oliver Goodman

Oliver Goodman is an undergraduate senior majoring in computer science with a minor in film and media studies. He spent the past summer as a True Entrepreneur Corps Fellow through True Ventures in San Francisco, where he interned as a full stack software engineer while learning about early stage startups and venture capital . Currently, he is working with Scott Cambo and Professor Gergle in CollabLab working with eye tracking devices to explore hands-free interfaces.

Patti Bao

Patti (BA, University of California, Berkeley) is a Ph.D. candidate in the Technology & Social Behavior program. She completed her custom undergraduate degree in Interdisciplinary Studies and joined the lab in Fall 2007. Patti is interested in the perception of visual information and communication processes around collaborative visualizations. She has also examined creativity support tools and behavioral responses to large and small devices.

Sarah D'Angelo

Scott Cambo

Scott Cambo is a PhD Student in the Technology and Social Behavior program at Northwestern with research interests in Ubiquitous Computing, Self-Tracking, and Mobile HCI. After completing completing his BS in Information Science at Cornell University he sent a summer as a fellow in the Data Science For Social Good program at University of Chicago. He is currently working with the Center for Behavior and Intervention Technology and the CollabLab.

Yi Qiao

Yi Qiao is a sophomore studying Computer Science in the McCormick School of Engineering with an interest in data science and machine learning. She is involved in SWE, WiC, IEEE, and is currently working with Scott Cambo on user-centered machine learning for activity recognition and mobile HCI at CollabLab.
