Alice Ivy-Pemberton

Alice Ivy-Pemberton joined the London Philharmonic Orchestra as Co-Leader in February 2023. Praised by The New York Times for her ‘sweet-toned playing', Alice has performed as a soloist, chamber and orchestral musician to international acclaim. While growing up in New York City and studying with Nurit Pacht, Alice made a nationally televised Carnegie Hall debut aged ten, and was a finalist at the Menuhin International Competition at the age of 12. Alice earned her Bachelors and Masters degrees at The Juilliard School under the tutelage of Itzhak Perlman and Catherine Cho as a fully-funded recipient of the Kovner Fellowship. During her studies she won Juilliard's Violin Concerto Competition, performed extensively with the New York Philharmonic and The Philadelphia Orchestra, and led orchestras under the baton of Barbara Hannigan, Xian Zhang and Matthias Pintscher. Upon graduating in 2022 she was awarded the Polisi Prize and a Benzaquen Career Advancement Grant in recognition of ‘tremendous talent, promise, creativity, and potential to make a significant impact in the performing arts'. An avid chamber musician, Alice has collaborated with Itzhak Perlman, Anthony Marwood, Gil Shaham and members of the Belcea, Doric, Juilliard and Brentano string quartets, and performed with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. Festival appearances include Music@Menlo, Moritzburg and Yellow Barn. Also a passionate advocate for new music and its social relevance, Alice created Drowning Monuments, a noted multimedia project on climate change that brought together five world premieres for solo violin.

Andrew Barclay

Andrew is the London Philharmonic Orchestra's Principal Percussionist and has been a member of the Orchestra since 1995. After studying at the Royal College of Music, he embarked on a wide-ranging freelance career with London and regional orchestras, chamber ensembles and contemporary music groups. Prior to joining the LPO, he spent five years as a member of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. Andrew has also performed in West End shows including The Lion King and Les Misérables; on film soundtracks including The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter; and other film and TV projects. He has worked with the Philharmonia Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra and the orchestras of the Royal Opera House and English National Opera, among others. As a teacher and coach, Andrew is much in demand: he is a professor of percussion at the Royal Academy of Music, visiting professor at the Royal College of Music and is regularly invited to give masterclasses at home and abroad. He is the regular percussion coach for the Britten-Pears School at Snape Maltings, and in 2012 performed a similar role with the Aldeburgh World Orchestra. 2018 saw him working with both the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and the European Union Youth Orchestra.

Anne McAneney

Anne McAneney was born and grew up in Belfast. She studied at Goldsmiths College, London, and at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama where she was awarded the Principal's Prize. She received a BMus from Goldsmiths College and a Masters Degree from Reading University. Anne made a living as a freelance musician in London before being appointed Principal Trumpet of the Royal Ballet Orchestra, making her the first woman to hold a principal trumpet chair in the UK. Anne was a member of London Brass for 23 years. She joined the London Philharmonic Orchestra as Sub-Principal Trumpet in 2000 and is a Professor of Trumpet at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama.

Annemarie Federle

Annemarie was appointed Principal Horn of the LPO in January 2023. Annemarie has enjoyed freelancing orchestrally across the UK, appearing as guest principal with the Philharmonia and BBC Scottish Symphony orchestras, and working with the London Symphony, Royal Philharmonic and London Chamber orchestras. In October 2022 she was appointed as Principal Horn of the Aurora Orchestra. In May 2022, Annemarie stepped in at short notice to perform Knussen's Horn Concerto with the LPO at the Royal Festival Hall, conducted by Edward Gardner. In the same year, she performed at the Ryedale Festival and recorded chamber music with Three World Records. Other highlights include winning joint first prize at the Gianni Bergamo Classic Music Award in 2021, and performing Mozart's Horn Concerto No. 4 with the Munich Chamber Orchestra at the ARD International Music Competition. In October 2023 she performed Mozart's Horn Concerto No. 4 with the Orchestra at Brighton Dome. At the age of 17, Annemarie won the Brass Category Final of the 2020 BBC Young Musician competition. She went on to secure a place at the Final at Bridgewater Hall, where she performed Ruth Gipps's Horn Concerto with the BBC Philharmonic conducted by Mark Wigglesworth, broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and BBC 4 TV.

Benjamin Mellefont

Benjamin Mellefont was born in Sydney, Australia. He was appointed Principal Clarinet of the London Philharmonic Orchestra in 2019, having previously held the same position with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, with whom he also appeared as a soloist. He has also played as Guest Principal with many of the orchestras in the UK and Australia, and at festivals such as Salzburg, Edinburgh and Aldeburgh. In November 2023 Benjamin was the soloist in Mozart's Clarinet Concerto with the LPO at Eastbourne's Congress Theatre. A keen proponent of contemporary music, Benjamin has been a core and founding member of Explore Ensemble since 2012, with whom he has been involved in numerous premieres and commissions. With them, in 2019 he gave the UK premiere of Kaija Saariaho's Figura for Solo Clarinet and Ensemble. He is also a member of Ensemble Vindeleia, a collective that meets biannually in La Rioja, to present chamber music to remote villages in the region. Benjamin graduated in 2015 from the Royal College of Music with First Class Honours as the Tegner Scholar, having studied with Barnaby Robson, Richard Hosford, Timothy Lines and Michael Collins. Whilst there he won the Clarinet Prize and Concerto Competition. He has examined and given classes at several of the UK's conservatoires, and since 2019 has been a Professor of Clarinet at the Royal Academy of Music. When not playing clarinet, he enjoys producing electronic music, and can be occasionally found moonlighting as a barista in London coffee shops and markets.

Christopher Fraser

Christopher was elected as MP for Mid Dorset and North Poole (1997-2001) and Norfolk South West (2002-10). Whilst in Parliament he was a member of numerous committees including the Culture, Media & Sport Select Committee. He is now Strategic Counsel at BNY Mellon and a Board member of the oil company Plexus. He is a Director of British American Business, Freeman of the City of London, Chairman of the Conservative Alumni and a member of the Athenæum Club. Christopher was awarded an OBE in the 2013 New Year Honours for public and political service.

David Burke - CEO

David Burke became Chief Executive of the London Philharmonic Orchestra in June 2020. David Burke became our Chief Executive following 11 successful years as the Orchestra's General Manager and Finance Director. During this time he ensured the smooth day-to-day running of the Orchestra, leading on special projects and all financial, personnel and administrative issues.

David Whitehouse

David Whitehouse studied at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama before freelancing for 12 years, performing with orchestras and in West End shows. He was a member of the Philharmonia Orchestra from 2002, before joining the London Philharmonic Orchestra in 2008. He is in demand as a guest player with orchestras all over the UK, on the trombone and also the euphonium and bass trumpet.

Deborah Dolce

Deborah is a member of an Advisory Group for The Prince's Trust, which works to improve the lives of disadvantaged and vulnerable young people in the UK, and is also a school governor. She is a keen amateur musician and can be found trying to improve her piano playing or upholding a great British tradition, singing with a choral society.

Desmond Cecil

Desmond was a professional violinist/oboist in Switzerland in his youth, having studied with Professors Max Rostal and Joy Boughton. He then joined HM Diplomatic Service (1970-95), serving in Embassies abroad, and was appointed CMG by The Queen. He took early retirement to work as an international political/funding consultant, and became the UK Representative of AREVA. He serves on various boards and trusts, including the Felix-Mendelssohn-Bartholdy Foundation Leipzig, Menuhin Festival Gstaad, Queen's College Oxford (Distinguished Friend of Oxford University Award) and the Athenæum Club.

Dr Catherine C. Høgel - Chairman

Catherine is a doctor who is currently taking time out of medicine to raise a growing family. Alongside experience in the corporate world she has also served on the boards of a number of arts organisations and charities, both in the UK and internationally. These include as a Trustee of the Dunard Fund, the Colburn School of Performing Arts and Awards for Young Musicians, and as a member of the Honorary Board of the Royal Opera House. Prior to succeeding Victoria Robey as Chair of the LPO Board in May 2022, she was Vice-Chair for three years, as well as a member of the Orchestra's Advisory Council. A keen musician herself, Catherine can be found singing, conducting and playing chamber music.

Edward Gardner

Edward Gardner became our 13th Principal Conductor, succeeding Vladimir Jurowski, who became Conductor Emeritus in recognition of his transformative impact on the Orchestra as Principal Conductor from 2007-21. Edward Gardner has been Principal Conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra since September 2021. Edward is also Chief Conductor of the Bergen Philharmonic, a position he will relinquish at the end of the 2023/24 season. From August 2024 he will undertake the Music Directorship of the Norwegian Opera and Ballet, having been their Artistic Advisor since February 2022.

Elena Dubinets

Elena Dubinets became our Artistic Director in September 2021. A high-profile artistic leader and music scholar, Elena Dubinets joined us as Artistic Director in September 2021, having previously held top artistic planning positions at the Atlanta and Seattle symphony orchestras. In 2018 she was named one of Musical America's Professionals of the Year. Her work within the wider community includes appointments on the Recording Academy Board of Directors and as Chair of the City of Seattle Music Commission.

Elisabeth Wiklander

Elisabeth was a member of the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra before accepting her current position in the London Philharmonic Orchestra in 2013. She has taught orchestral playing at conservatoires in Amsterdam, London and New York, and is currently developing a cello class at the Ljungskile Folkhögskola institution in Sweden.

Emily Benn

Emily Benn is an Executive at Hakluyt and Company, and an elected member of the City of London Corporation. Aged 17, Emily was selected as the youngest Parliamentary candidate in the UK's history, and subsequently stood in the 2010 and 2015 General Elections as a Labour candidate. Professionally, she has been an investment banker, think tank director, festival director, and researcher at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. She was elected onto the City of London Corporation in 2022, and is a councillor for Bread Street Ward. She started playing the violin aged five, and studied at the Royal College of Music Junior Department, and conducted the Oxford New Orchestra at university. She co-founded and leads the Statutory Instruments and the UK Parliamentary String Quartet, and is a Governor of the Guildhall School of Music & Drama.

Emma Oldfield

Emma began playing the violin in group classes in her primary school at the age of nine and was lucky enough to be introduced to orchestral playing almost immediately by her local music service. She went on to study at Chetham's School of Music and in 2012 began her studies at the Royal College of Music with Jan Repko and Gaby Lester. Aged 19, Emma became a member of the European Union Youth Orchestra, and during her studies gained places on the English National Opera Evolve Scheme, the Philharmonia MMSF Fellowship Programme and the Hallé String Leadership Scheme at the Royal Northern College of Music, where she studied with Jim Clark. Also a keen chamber musician, while at the RCM Emma formed a successful string quartet with friends. The quartet performed together for five years at venues such as Wigmore Hall, Kings Place, the Bridgewater Hall, the Royal Festival Hall, the Cadogan Hall and the Elgar Room at the Royal Albert Hall. Since graduating in 2018, Emma has enjoyed building up a varied freelance life and works with orchestras including the Philharmonia, Hallé, Liverpool Philharmonic, BBC Philharmonic and Britten Sinfonia. She also regularly guest-leads the Copenhagen Philharmonic, where she was appointed on a short-term contract as 2nd Concertmaster prior to her appointment at the LPO. She became Co-Principal Second Violin in June 2022.

Fiona Shackleton qualified as a Solicitor in 1980 and was made a Partner in Breecher & Co in 1981. By 1986 she had become a Partner at Farrer and Co and in the same year co-founded the International Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. She joined Payne Hicks Beach in 2001 as a Partner, and remains Solicitor for The Prince of Wales and The Duke of Sussex. In the 2006 New Year Honours List she was made a Lieutenant of the Royal Victorian Order, in July 2010 she was made an Honorary Doctorate of Exeter University and in December 2010 made a Life Peer.
