Bernie Grant

BERNIE GRANT MP is the Labour Party Member of Parliament for Tottenham in North London, England. Elected to Parliament in 1987, he is the senior of the first ever black M.Ps elected to the British Parliament in that year. He represents the Labour Party, and is a former chair of the Socialist campaign group of Labour MPs. He has taken a leading role in making contacts with black politicians throughout the world, including the congressional Black Caucus in the USA. To this end, he has travelled widely. He accompanied the Rev. Jesse Jackson on his mission to South Africa in February 1990, greeting Nelson Mandela on the day of his release. He is also active in attempting to bring together black business men and women, both in Britain and throughout the world and is founder and chair of the Global Trade Centre. Born in Guyana 1944, he came to Britain in 1963 with his family, and found work as a railway clerk, and later telephonist. He became a full time Trade Union official, and was elected a local councillor in 1978, rising to become the first ever black leader (Mayor) of a local authority. He has also been heavily involved in the anti-apartheid movement, and has taken the lead in highlighting the rise of racism in Europe, not least in his capacity as the chair of the Standing Conference Against Racism in Europe (SCORE). He is a member of the Committee of Eminent Persons on Reparations for Africa, and has been prominent in bringing this issue to Britain, as the chair of the African Reparations Movement (UK). Bernie Grant's political career has brought him into conflict with the British establishment, and he has met with the full force of the racism of the British press and media, particularly following his defence of young people who rioted against police harassment in his inner city constituency in 1985. He has also created controversy by wearing African dress each year at the State Opening of Parliament, and by his forthright interventions in the House of Commons on matters on issues of race, not least on racism within the police and criminal justice system. He has always maintained that oppressed groups must form a political alliance if they are to advance. Crucial also is the unity of black people throughout the Diaspora. He is regarded by many as a leading spokesperson, not only for black people, but also for women, the disabled, the elderly, the Irish, and for youth as well as for the poor and deprived. Bernie Grant of Harcourt Road, Muswell Hill, was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by Pace University, New York, in May 1993, in recognition of his work in striving for justice and equal rights.

Lesley Garrett

Lesley Garrett is one of the few sopranos who has successfully bridged the gap from stage to recording artist. She has established herself as non-traditional operatic performer. Her recordings have often crossed over into the pop market. Ms. Garrett is a fervent campaigner to make opera accessible to all and has won fans from both sides of the Atlantic. Born and educated in the UK, Lesley completed her education at the National Opera Studio and is now a fellow at the Royal Academy of Music where she studies with Joy Mammen. Lesley's career began with engagements including the Westford Festival, Welsh National Opera North, the Buston Festival and Glyndebourne. In 1984 she became a member of the English National Opera having previously appeared there as guest. In 1995, Ms. Garrett made her successful debut recital tour of the United States. She then returned to the UK for the broadcast of her first BBC TV Special, Viva La Diva, a program featuring popular operatic arias which was nominated in the music category at the 1996 Montreaux Festival. She has made four solo recordings of popular arias: Diva! A Soprano At the Movies (SSD 1007) and Prima Donna (SSD1023) - both were in the American Classical Crossover charts and the UK Classical and Pop charts for many months. Simple Gifts (SILKD 6004), which was released world wide in 1994, entered straight into the Top Ten of the classical charts. A Soprano in Red (SILKD 6008), hit the Top 50 Pop Album chart in the UK and remained at the number 1 position in the Classical Artist Album chart for several months. In the fall of 1996, Ms. Garrett released her stunning album, Soprano in Hollywood (SILKD 6013). Her fifth record for Silva Classics was something of a departure for the opera singer. The recording features songs from the 1930's and 1940's - The Golden Age of The Hollywood Musical. Timeless classics by Rodgers & Hart, Victor Herbert, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter and George Gershwin bring back the glamour and mood of pre and post war Hollywood - all given the unique Garrett touch.

Lord Covington

Lady Covington is dying, sadly, and unfortunately, because it leaves the way clear for Lord Covington (Nigel Hawthorne) who wants to to sell the school (he never liked little girls very much, anyway). Those plans, though, are so often thwarted by the dirt and dust sent up by Pepito (Kristian de la Osa), the lonely son of the nearby Spanish ambassador; he's a show-off who drives his Vespa round and around the schoolyard upsetting prospective buyers after boasting to the tolerant little girls about his prowess.

Robin Lustig

  • Broadcaster & Journalist
Robin Lustig has spent most of his working life as a journalist, the majority of the time abroad. But buying Maureen Lipman's old house in Muswell Hill cemented Lustig's roots in Haringey when he and his family moved to the area from Highgate in 1982.

Trevor Nelson

TREVOR NELSON One's R&B chart show. Late on Sunday evening: you're moving to the essential grooves in R&B, Hip Hop and Swing. Trevor Nelson is the DJ at the helm on these national network shows. That's when he's not on telly, fronting MTV's The Lick. And then Music Magazine recently voted him the fifth most influential man in the music business. "I've lived in Muswell Hill for just six months but the funny thing is that my introduction to music was when I lived in Haringey in the 70s for a few months. All I did that summer was listen to records. "For about four years before that, the only record I listened to was the Jackson Five's greatest hits. I knew all the words and I can still see the warped vinyl now. "The road I live on is quite busy but everything is within easy reach. I can walk to the local shops and restaurants. When I lived in Forest Gate I went everywhere by car. I can't wait until the summer to hit Alexandra Park with my wife and son." His son, Miles, is named after the jazz trumpet supremo. "He was born just after Miles Davies died." explains Trevor, "I only got to see him in concert once but I can appreciate the greatness of the man." Trevor is a 70s man, dedicated to Stevie Wonder, Steven Bishop, Ricky Lee Jones and American Jazz Funk. "I'm working with Sony at the moment to produce a two CD compilation titled The Incredible Sounds of Trevor Nelson. I get to choose the records myself this time - unlike 100% Pure Grooves." After his heady summer in Haringey, Trevor became focused on music. "I've been independent for as long as I can remember and as soon as I could get a job, I bought records," he says. "Moving to Muswell Hill was a nightmare, I did have 10,000 records, I had to exercise some quality control and sold 3,000 before moving. Some records I had never listened to but I did come across records I'd bought when I was 14, disintegrating - I wanted to cry. CDs are the future but I will keep my vinyls. Obviously, some are classics." Trevor has done practically everything in the industry, from wholesale and retail to A&R (artiste & repertoire) and promotion. "When I was younger, my sound system was called the Mad Hatters, we used to play some freaky soul sounds. I used to hang out with people like Jazzy B and - as you know - he went on to develop Soul II Soul. Being the DJ meant you didn't have to ask the girls to dance!" Trevor has been at Radio One for three years, working his way up from the graveyard shift to the more prominent slots he does now. "My dad wanted me to become an accountant but he did phone me after my first show to congratulate me - he gave me nine out of ten."
