Ashfaq Khokhar

Ashfaq is a Metallurgist and Chartered Engineer with experience in heat treatment, optical microscopy, mechanical testing, project management and failure investigations. Experience on failure investigations includes parent metal (ferrous and non-ferrous) and weld failure from the marine, oil and gas, chemical, automotive, power generation and construction industries. Ashfaq joined Sandberg in April 2021 after leaving TWI, where he managed a metallurgy laboratory and was a senior project leader in the Materials department. Ashfaq has gained wide experience in metallurgy, having worked on major arc, friction, laser and electron beam welding projects. Daniel Kinnersley

Daniel is an Imperial College graduate with grounding in a thorough and methodical approach to analytical work and joined the Sandberg chemistry department in 2006 and is currently Senior Chemist for the firm. Daniel is experienced in FTIR analysis of polymers, paints and sealants and also in heavy metal components of paints. He is experienced in the identification of unknown water sources through the characterization of their chemical components and subsequent tracing to their source.

Ewa Krylowicz

Originally from Bartoszyce, town in North-east Poland, Ewa joined Sandberg in 2005 after graduating from Warmia and Mazury University in Poland with a Masters and Engineering degree in Geodesy, Cartography and Real Estate Valuation. Her initial appointment as an Assistant GPR Surveyor was both challenging and life-changing. She quickly learned new skills and was rapidly promoted to GPR Surveyor and then Senior GPR Surveyor. In 2018 she became Manager of the GPR Department.

Graham Lee

Graham is an experienced Architect with specialist knowledge of building contracts, Architectural appointments, professional obligations and liability. His expert witness work has involved him in oral evidence to Family and Coroners Court as well as all types of mediation and other pre-court processes. His background in Practice also allows for specific investigation of building failures in both design and installation. Typically, he investigates cases in the areas of consultant coordination and on-site workmanship. He has been involved in numerous environmental tests, both as a participant and witness. Typical subjects have been environmental façade testing, BS 8414/ BR 135 fire testing, corrosion analysis and component load testing related to internal domestic fittings. Graham has presented many lectures on subjects including: The use of stone, stone detailing, spontaneous glass fractures and cladding fire issues. Gregory Moor

Gregory is a Chartered Building Surveyor and heads up the Building Inspection and Investigation and Ground Radar Departments. He started his career prior to professionally qualifying at Leo Lewis & Company in Harrow Weald, before moving on to Shaw and Company Chartered Surveyors in Richmond. The next 7 years prior to joining Sandberg were spent at construction consultant, John Rowan and Partners LLP where Gregory was an Associate Partner working across a broad range of construction/property sectors undertaking both project and professional work. He joined Sandberg in March 2012 as a Senior Associate and was promoted to Partner in May 2013. Gregory is an accredited expert and regularly acts as an expert advisor and expert witness, typically in building/construction defect related matters. Ian Hudson

Since joining Sandberg has gained experience in a broad range of inspection and Quality Assurance skills including concrete (in-situ and precast), structural steelwork (including MPI and dye penetrant weld inspection), structural bearing inspection and testing of pot, elastomeric, spherical and roller bearings and Quality Assurance implementation. In particular, Ian has considerable experience in the manufacture and use of precast concrete tunnel lining segments having been heavily involved in a number of major London Underground and Docklands Light Railway contracts. Most recently, Ian has been seconded to Canary Wharf Contractors Limited as their Quality Manager Concrete, controlling the quality of all concrete provided to Canary Wharf, totalling almost 500,000m 2 per year of concrete placed. John Jones

John has considerable experience, which has been accumulated over 30 years spent with Sandberg in the inspection of all types of precast and prestressed concrete products, being particularly associated with the inspection and testing of prestressed bridge beams, conarch units, and ordinary reinforced concrete unit production. John regularly performs quality monitoring inspections at various manufacturing plants throughout the British Isles. In more recent years, John's scope of work has increased to include performing quality monitoring inspections of steelwork fabrication and protective treatment for bridge and building projects on major structures around the UK. Additionally, John has extensive experience in the materials testing environment, having been the Engineer in charge of on-site materials testing laboratories for a number of years, including the implementation of quality systems complying with current UKAS accreditation requirements. Julian French

Julian has over 45 years of experience in quality assurance, inspection and testing, covering steelwork for the civil, structural and offshore industries. Julian provided assistance with the National Structural Steelwork Specification, 5th Edition, and indirectly with BS EN 1090-2. He now sits on the Steering Committee of the National Structural Steelwork Specification, 7th Edition. Julian sits on the BSI committee QS1-4 for ISO 99001, Quality in Construction. Julian has been actively involved with The Welding Institute (TWI) for many years. He is a past chairman of the TWICL Specialists and Practitioners Management Committee (CSWIP) and past chairman and vice chairman of the TWICL Welding Fabricator Certification Scheme committee. He is chairman of the TWI Technical Group for Structures and Infrastructure and sits on the editorial committee of the TWI Journal, Welding and Joining Matters. He has had several articles published in the TWI Journal.

Julie Dell

Julie has worked in the construction industry for more than 20 years in both consultancy and contracting environments, developing a thorough understanding of the design and construction of buildings and structures. Since joining Sandberg as a Consultant, she has investigated failures and defects and acted as an Expert Witness in cases associated with many different materials and structures, including: Cementitious materials, in particular, floor screeds and reinforced concrete Precast concrete, glass fibre reinforced concrete (GRC) and cast stone Floor and wall tiling Resilient floor coverings (vinyl, rubber and other sheet systems) Car park surface coatings and resin flooring External Wall Insulation (insulated render) systems Prefabricated bathroom pods Julie has carried out many screed and concrete condition assessments, and investigated damp and water ingress associated with roofs and basement structures. Outside work, Julie enjoys running, cycling and swimming, and has recently taken up stand-up paddle boarding. She sings in a rock choir and has recorded at Abbey Road Studios. Mohamad Sabra

Mohamad has worked internationally in the construction materials testing and production industry for more than 18 years, mainly involved in Readymix concrete, Precast concrete, Masonry units, Asphalt, Soil, Aggregate, GRC and GFRP, developing a thorough understanding of the properties, characteristics, and applications of various construction materials. He has conducted several concrete condition assessments and investigated concrete deterioration cases for various projects by adopting NDT and intrusive testing techniques. He also specializes in sustainable and durable construction, value-added recycling of wastes and low emission concretes.

Neil Sandberg - CEO

After graduating from Exeter University, Neil joined Mowlem to work on various projects including London City Airport. After secondment to Ove Arup working on the Stockley Park Project, Neil moved to the USA working with Greiner, a large American consulting engineering firm, now part of the URS Group. On return from the States in 1992, Neil joined Sandberg to be based in our Clapham Laboratories working as an engineer in the Construction Materials Department. Two years later he moved to Hong Kong to manage Sandberg (Asia) Ltd. Projects ranged from Ting Kau Bridge to Hong Kong Housing Authority schemes. In 1996 Neil returned to the UK to manage Sandberg's Civil Engineering Group. This Group is responsible for our site based laboratories operating worldwide. In 2000 Neil became Managing Partner of the firm. In 2008 Neil was elected Chairman of the Association for Consultancy and Engineering. In 2011 he was elected as Council Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers, joining its Executive Board in 2012.

Richard Rogerson

Originally from Worcestershire, Richard joined Sandberg in 1984 after graduating from Salford University and three years with Taylor Woodrow Construction at Heysham Nuclear Power Station. His initial appointment was as an engineer in the Concrete Laboratory and from 1993 to 2021 he managed Sandberg Laboratories Group activities in the construction materials field. He has extensive experience in inspection and testing of building and civil engineering materials, primarily concrete, mortar and concrete-related products, but also masonry materials to UKAS accredited national and international standards. He now acts as a consultant to the Construction Materials Department. Over the years he has developed a special interest in: the performance and durability of high alumina cement concrete the evaluation of slip resistance of flooring materials assessment of floor screed and floor tile bedding materials Richard was appointed a Partner in May 2006. Away from Sandberg, Richard has been a school governor for over 20 years, is a keen member of the Geograph Project and follows the fortunes of Kidderminster Harriers FC.

Roger Lucas

Roger graduated from Loughborough University with a degree in Civil Engineering and has worked for 35 years in the construction industry. Working within the quality control assessment and testing materials environment, he has gained a broad knowledge of civil engineering and building materials, testing, inspection and investigation techniques. He joined Sandberg in 2005, initially working on the Channel Tunnel Rail Link projects at site testing facilities. In 2009 he joined the Building Inspection and Investigation Department as an Associate. He is responsible for preparation of survey proposals, organising and resourcing site work, supervision and reporting for major site investigation projects. Rom Gostomski

Rom joined Sandberg in 1981, initially working in Civil Engineering site laboratories before joining the Cladding Inspection Department based in Clapham, London. Working within the quality assessment and testing materials environment, he has gained a broad knowledge of civil engineering materials, testing, inspection and investigation techniques. He also has considerable experience working overseas, particularly in the Middle East. In 2000 he was appointed Manager of the Building Inspection Department, overseeing structural and civil engineering inspections and investigations and preparation of reports for major site investigation projects. Over the years, Rom developed an interest in Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and is on a mission to promote and expand the use of GPR as a non-destructive technique to explore the sub-surface, particularly in the Civil Engineering and Construction Industry. In 2001 he founded the Sandberg GPR department, which he managed for 16 years. He enjoys pushing the boundaries of GPR and finding new methods and survey techniques. His GPR specialisms include: Concrete imaging and rebar mapping Concrete floor slab surveys NDT building investigation Utility surveys Chimney flue location Void detection and underground tank location In 2017 Rom moved to Spain and now works as a GPR Consultant. Sebastian was born and educated in Jelenia Gora, a small town in the southwest of Poland. He graduated from the Wroclaw University of Economics with a Master's degree in Quality and Environmental Management. Since his move to the UK in 2002, he has gained experience in concrete surveys at every level - starting as Junior Survey Technician up to Area Manager. He has a wide knowledge of concrete inspection requirements, testing and the organisation of efficient surveys. Simon Clarke

Simon Morris

Simon is a well-respected Engineer with some 28 years service with the Partnership. During this time Simon has gained a wealth of experience within the Metallurgy Department, both in the laboratories and on-site. He has particular expertise and experience in developing and conducting various load testing activities, which involve the selection and application of both destructive and non-destructive techniques for steel and concrete structures. More recently his testing activities have extended to cover performance assessment of glass components for cladding/curtain wall and barrier systems. As Assistant Projects Manager for the Metallurgy Department, Simon has been developing the testing of scaffold access and false-work systems as well as individual scaffold component testing. The laboratory facilities now include a full range of UKAS accredited tests for the verification of a wide range of scaffold components in accordance with the current EN74 series of standards. Yohann is a highly experienced Chartered Engineer and member of The Welding Institute with a thorough academic grounding in materials and welding and diverse post-graduate experience. He has a deep knowledge of the standards and systems that are used in the wider civil engineering industry and a seat on the BCSA's Fabrication and Welding User's Group. Yohann joined Sandberg as a welding engineer in 2013 after leaving Rowecord Engineering where he had been a welding engineer for 5 years. During his time at Rowecord, Yohann gained wide experience in structural steel fabrication having worked on a variety of bridges, blast furnaces and some of the most challenging structures on the London Olympic site. Yohann had previously gained diverse experience working for SMB SA in Ploufragan (Brittany), one of the major steelwork contractors in France and had also been involved with advanced welding processes such as laser welding of nickel superalloys for the automotive industry. Yohann gained his Master's Degree in Material Sciences and Welding Engineering at the Ecole Polytechnique de l' Université de Nantes where he has also been a guest lecturer since 2010.
