Since joining Brookes Bell, Adam's focus shifted to Marketing and Business Development although he continues to advise on complex commercial shipping and Superyacht claims. Background Adam has considerable adjusting experience having spent the last 10 years working on cargo, yacht and hull and machinery claims. Adam specialises in super and mega yachts including new build disputes, casualty investigation, builders risk, hull and machinery and personal injury claims. In May 2011, Adam qualified (by examination) as an Associate of the Association of Average Adjusters and over the years he has built up an extensive knowledge of claims management processes, policy conditions and maritime law cases.

Adrian Scales

Adrian Scales is a Chartered Master Mariner (CMMar). He joined Brookes Bell in January 2007 from a position as Master with P&O Ferries (Irish Sea) Ltd., and became Director of Nautical UK in 2019. He has considerable ship handling experience on various vessel types and gained pilotage exemption certificates for ports visited during employment with P&O. During his 18 years at sea, he served on various ship types including reefer/container, general cargo, freight ferries, Ro-Pax ferries and High-Speed Passenger Craft (HSC). Background Adrian has carried out a variety of surveys and opinion-based work since joining Brookes Bell; these are listed at the end of this CV. His particular specialisations are in the areas of salvage and wreck removal; ship handling; ro-ro vessels and cargoes; high-speed craft; refrigerated vessels and cargoes; stowage and securing. Adrian also specialises in the assessment of crew actions following emergency incidents, especially fire, with respect to compliance with training and familiarisation on board Ro-Ro and general cargo vessels. He has also been extensively involved in the investigation, assessment and overseeing of a number of recent salvage related/grounding incidents and wreck removals, including GOODFAITH (2015), SITEAM ANJA (SCR - 2016), NANCY GLEN (2018), PRISCILLA (2018), NEARCHOS (SCR - 2018), YANTIAN EXPRESS (2019) and HABIB EXPRESS (SCR - 2019). In November 2015, Adrian was appointed to the Lloyd's Salvage Arbitration Branch SCR Panel as Special Casualty Representative (SCR). Adrian has provided expert reports for, and given expert evidence in, court proceedings in the UK. Adrian was awarded Chartered Master Mariner status in November 2017.

Alan Smaridge

Alan Smaridge is a chemistry graduate and a Chartered Chemist. Alan worked initially as an analytical development chemist for a cosmetics and soap manufacturer before switching to the petroleum industry in 1982. He started out in this field as a laboratory chemist for an oil inspection company, analysing an extensive range of petroleum products and chemicals, later becoming a chemist inspector, gaining a wide knowledge of sampling, inspection and measurement procedures both in the UK and overseas. Background Alan worked as an independent chemist surveyor and consultant for more than 20 years before joining Brookes Bell in 2009 where he continues to apply his experience to disputes involving a diverse range of commodities carried by road, rail and sea, including crude oil, numerous petroleum products and petrochemicals through to sophisticated pharmaceuticals. Alan has set up and participated in numerous joint analysis investigations and is experienced in conducting field surveys aboard tankers, at refineries and storage installations worldwide. He has particular experience of bunker quality disputes and the chemistry of bunker fuel, and has served on several Institute of Petroleum technical panels. Alan is an experienced expert witness and has prepared many reports and technical papers for use in arbitrations and High Court proceedings.

Alistair Roaf

Alistair Roaf is a Chartered Master Mariner with a degree in Maritime Studies and a master's degree in Business Administration. He joined Brookes Bell in January 2008 from a position as Master within BP Shipping. Alistair took a break from Brookes Bell between 2014 and 2018 when he worked for Chevron as a Marine Vetting Specialist where he reviewed over 5,000 tankers. Background Alistair has considerable ship handling experience on various vessel sizes. During his eighteen years at sea, Alistair served on a variety of tankers including lube oil, clean and dirty product, LPG and crude oil tankers up to VLCC. He has also served on a dredger and square-rig sail training vessel. Alistair has also worked ashore, for BP Shipping, as an Operations Superintendent. Alistair has provided expert reports for, and given expert evidence in, legal proceedings including mediation and arbitration in the UK, United States and Canada.

Andrew Page

Andrew Page is a Marine Engineer with a Class One Certificate of Competency (Motor). He joined Brookes Bell in 2017 with seagoing experience complimented by management and survey roles. Background Andrew's surveying experience includes having attended various types and sizes of vessels for a variety of incidents including main and auxiliary machinery failure investigations, fire damages, crane damages, collision damages, bunker quality disputes and MARPOL surveys/investigations. Andrew has also performed pre-purchase surveys for Owners and condition surveys on behalf of Underwriters and P&I Clubs. Additionally, Andrew has given evidence in London arbitration. Andrew's shore-based experience includes working as a Superintendent and latterly Fleet Manager for a large container shipping company, where activities included drydocking projects and overseeing the day-to-day management of the vessels. Prior to that, Andrew worked as a Marine Engineer on deep-sea container vessels where he gained first-hand experience of slow and medium-speed engines, as well as related auxiliary machinery, systems and plant.

Andy McGibbon

Andy is a Naval Architect with over 17 years' practical engineering and design support experience for marine-related projects. He has a BEng in Naval Architecture and PG Dip in Marine Technology from the University of Strathclyde and, on graduating in 1996, joined Strachan & Henshaw in Bristol as a project engineer. Andy also worked for UMC International, BVT and SeaTec before joining Brookes Bell Safety at Sea Limited in October 2014. Background Andy has experience in ship and submarine structures and equipment that includes hull repair and conversion, stabilisers, rudders and thrusters, a large proportion involving design of equipment and procedures to facilitate afloat repair or replacement. He has been involved in structural and mechanical design, stress analysis using hand calculations and FEA, R&D and 3D concept integration work, and production of procedures and their associated risk assessments. Andy has considerable practical experience of dockyard, ship and offshore support that includes site management of dive teams, support staff, infrastructure and fitters, and more recently carried out 3D laser scanning (using FARO scanners) to create as-built 3D CAD models using the captured data for integration of replacement equipment and new systems.

Anthony York - COO

Anthony York is the Chief Operating Officer of Brookes Bell. He has a BEng in Naval Architecture from the University of Strathclyde. Background Anthony has considerable experience in the field of stability assessment and rule compliance for a variety of ship types and sizes, and has a detailed knowledge of the application of both deterministic and probabilistic stability standards. He is an experienced NAPA user and has knowledge of a number of other software packages e.g. HECSALV. He has worked on a large number of Ro-Pax and Cruise Liner conversion projects addressing aspects such as trim optimisation, bulbous bow and ducktail design, cargo capacity increases and new rule compliance. Anthony has extensive model testing experience in the area of STOCKHOLM Agreement compliance and has been involved in propulsion and trim optimisation tests for both large and small vessels. He has been directly involved in a number of concept designs for both Cruise and Ro-Pax platforms working with both design offices and yards, and has been involved in projects for flag states developing new stability standards. Anthony has worked on a number of casualty investigations with involvement ranging from flooding simulations on COSTA CONCORDIA and stability calculations on small vessels such as Tugs and Fishing vessels. He has also been directly involved in salvage support and refloating plan development for a number of vessels, has carried out collision surveys, and has attended court as an expert witness.

Arron Jackaman

Arron Jackaman is an ISO 9712/17024 Level 3 Non-Destructive Engineer who has worked in the Heavy Industry Sector for 18 years, specialising in marine, offshore and land-based heavy plant installations and asset integrity management. He has been with Brookes Bell since 2016. Background Arron is PCN certified by the British Institute of Mechanical Engineers in the advanced NDT methods of Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing, Time of Flight Diffraction and Eddy Current Testing of Castings, forgings, welded and tubular products. He has extensive experience in both Ultrasonic and Electromagnetic Test Methods including conventional pulse echo Ultrasonics, Condition Monitoring, Eddy Current Array, Magnetic Flux Leakage Inspection, Alternating Current Field Measurement, Infrared Thermography, Time of Flight Determination of 3D elastic materials and 3D metrology grade laser mapping techniques. Arron has spent many years offering expert advice and technical support, both on and offshore for outage campaigns and shutdowns across South East Asia, Europe, Western Africa the Middle East and South America.   He is highly experienced with various specialist NDT systems, including the Eddyfi Ectane 2, GE Topaz, Olympus Omniscan MX1 and MX2, Silverwings Scorpion and RMS Automated Corrosion Monitoring System. Arron possesses an in-depth knowledge of surface and sub-surface inspection and analysis methods used in implementing non-destructive inspection of welds, castings, forgings and pressurised plant, pipelines and vessels.  He is fluent in all areas of offshore safety procedures and holds current BOSIET, EBS and MIST certification.

Brendan Cuffe

Brendan Cuffe is an Incorporated Engineer with a First Class Certificate of Competency (Motor) and a BSc (Open) degree. Brendan joined Brookes Bell in 2008 initially in the London office, after ten years' previous surveying experience with two London based Marine Consultancies. Brendan relocated to Shanghai office in 2010 until March 2019 when he returned to Liverpool in the role of Director of UK. Brendan is also responsible for the operations and expansion of our bunkering department and has dealt almost exclusively with bunker dispute cases since 2018. As well as attending vessels to investigate damage and cause when fuel quality is suspected, Brendan works in close co-operation with our chemists, dealing with a range of fuel related matters such as contamination, non-conformance to ISO:8217 specifications, sampling and on board fuel management of problematic fuels. Background After completing his cadetship in 1983, Brendan remained at sea within the P&O Group until 1997. He sailed on a product carrier, various container ships and passenger Ro-Ro ferries. He has sailed in positions up to and including Chief Engineer and during his time at sea gained considerable experience of the management, operation and maintenance of various marine power plants, including slow and medium speed diesel engines, and their associated equipment. From 1997 to 1998, Brendan worked as a Plant Engineer on the steam plant at a Combined Cycle Gas Turbine power station, where he was involved in the operation and maintenance of a 250MW impulse steam turbine, supplied by a three stage high pressure heat recovery steam generator and its associated balance of plant. During his time as a Surveyor, Brendan has carried out General Marine Consultancy work on behalf of Owners, Protection and Indemnity Clubs, Charterers, Underwriters and Marine Lawyers, including the preparation of cases for litigation and arbitration and giving evidence as an expert witness in both Court and Arbitration. He has worked as a Surveyor on a wide range of ship types and work undertaken has included superficial inspection surveys, condition surveys, Class record inspections and pre-purchase inspections, new buildings disputes, sale and purchase disputes, personal and asbestos related injuries, collisions, engine room flooding and associated machinery damage, engine room fires, cargo gear performance disputes, bunker quality disputes and associated engine damage, main engine bearing failures, crankshaft failures, piston failures, liner failures, intermediate tailshaft failures, seaworthiness disputes, contact damage and failures to rudders, rudder stocks and propellers, rudder loss, ice damage, performance and consumption assessments and hull and machinery claims disputes. Brendan also has extensive new-building related experience. He has been involved in projects in a variety of shipyards, both State and privately owned, assisting Buyers and Sellers. This work has involved a variety of ship types, including tankers, product/chemical carriers, bulk carriers, container ships and platform supply vessels.

Bronwen Carey

Bronwen Carey is a Fuel Chemist with a master's degree in chemistry with industrial experience and special honours. Background Bronwen has 5 years' experience of working in fuels and materials analysis with both physical testing and a broad spectrum of instrumentational methods such as GC-MS, GCGC-MS, SEM, FT-IR and thermal analysis techniques. She is experienced in analysis for fuels quality incidents and participating in witnessed joint analyses as well as method development for research projects including oil exploration and DNA tagging.

Chris Ellyatt

Chris Ellyatt is a scientist with a BSc (Hons) Degree in Biology from the University of St Andrews. Prior to joining Brookes Bell in 2022, Chris worked for seven years for another leading marine consultancy based in London, specialising in forensic investigation of marine cargo related incidents. Background As a cargo scientist, he has extensive expertise and hands-on experience in bulk and packaged agricultural commodities, including bulk grain, feeds, frozen and fresh cargoes in Europe, North and South America, Africa and Asia. Specifically, he has comprehensive experience and knowledge with soya beans, maize / corn, wheat, bagged and bulk rice, seedcakes (including Distillers' Dried Grains with Solubles [DDGS] and soya bean meal [SBM]), bagged and bulk sugar, coffee and other dry cargoes. Chris has also performed and managed on-site sampling and inspections of citrus fruits, bananas and fish in addition to the cause and effects of wetting and mould damage to product packaging. Since becoming a Marine Consultant, Chris has worked on a wide variety of vessel types, including geared and non-geared bulkers, reefer vessels, container ships and barges. He has also performed many inspections and sampling operations in shoreside facilities such as warehouses, processing facilities, factories, container yards and silos. Typical issues that Chris has dealt with have included wetting, mould growth, self-heating, fumigation issues, fire and explosions, cargo liquefaction, physical and biological contamination, mycotoxins, infestations, inherent vice, quality issues and shortage. Chris is familiar with the sampling protocols of many commodities, including those of GAFTA, ISO and FOSFA, often advising clients on analysis methods and interpretation of results. Furthermore, Chris has experience in authoring expert reports and has given evidence as an expert witness during court proceedings in China, ultimately contributing towards a favourable judgement for his client. He believes in providing clear, productive and pragmatic advice to his clients and presenting the details of a situation in a concise and accurate manner to achieve practical outcomes. Chris is a fully elected member of the Royal Society of Biology, the Institute of Scientific and Technical Communicators and the Institute of Food Science and Technology. He has also been selected as a volunteer member of the Institute of Food Science and Technology Scientific Committee.

Dr Bogdan Ganea is a Naval Architect specialising in Hydrodynamics. Background Bogdan was a senior researcher of Icepronav (Shipbuilding Design and Research Institute) in Galaţi, Romania. His career spans over 30 years in the field of ship experimental and numerical hydrodynamics. He developed CFD code for steady and unsteady propeller calculation by boundary element method presented at the 22nd ITTC Propulsion Committee Propeller RANS/Panel Method Workshop, 5-6 April 1998, Grenoble. His experience includes also speed-power and manoeuvre sea trials conduct and data processing. Since 2009, he has been developing an in-house software for manoeuvring simulation, BBSIM - Brookes Bell Manoeuvring Simulator, which is deployed in numerous commercial projects for accident analysis and berthing / unberthing simulations under various environmental conditions. This code was also deployed in the SAFEPORT research project for ship trajectory optimization.

Dr Bryan Ward

Dr Bryan Ward joined Brookes Bell as a Scientist in 2018 having completed a PhD in Computational Chemistry from Imperial College London. Bryan's PhD research centred on using computational modelling techniques to provide detailed understanding of numerous chemical bond-making and breaking processes. Bryan also has a first-class Master's degree in Chemistry from Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh. As part of his degree he was exposed to various analytical techniques relevant to inorganic, organic and physical chemistry disciplines. Background At Brookes Bell, Bryan has gained ship-board experience for a wide range of commodities including solid bulk and grain cargoes as well as petroleum and liquid chemical cargoes. More recently Bryan has gained experience within the area of fuel chemistry. Bryan has attended laboratories throughout the UK and Europe to witness standard testing of bunker fuel samples in accordance with ISO 8217 and more exploratory analysis for fuel characterization and contaminant identification involving analytical techniques such as Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and gas chromatography with mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Bryan has also attended on-board tankers and at a refinery to oversee sampling of cargo tanks and shore tanks. Prior to joining Brookes Bell, Bryan was employed as a post-doctoral research associate for almost 2 years, working in collaboration with various experimentalists at Imperial College.
