Andy Arnold

Andy was born into a Christian family within a North Warwickshire community and now lives in Barnoldswick. In between he lived in London, Liverpool and Birmingham where he was learning about the power and mystery of God. He was a consultant Urological Surgeon and medical leader in Birmingham and Nuneaton.

Andy Milne

Andy Milne is a Church Army Evangelist. He and his wife Tracy began pioneering Sorted, a fresh expression, in late 2003. Beginning as a youth church, often reaching teens from deprived areas; Sorted grew and eventually multiplied as new youth fresh expressions were started. Young adult and young family groups followed as teens turned into twenties. Andy Milne has been appointed by the Archbishop of York to lead a new Missional Youth Church Network (MYCN) beginning in the North of England. It is in joint partnership with Church Army and the Archbishop of York Youth Trust.

Dave Bookless

Dave is director for theology, churches & sustainable communities and co-founder of A Rocha UK. He grew up in India and has variously been a teacher, debt-collector, vicar, lecturer and barman. He has a national and international speaking and writing ministry, and published Planetwise through IVP in 2008.

Frank Field

Job Titles:
  • Member of Parliament for Birkenhead
Frank is currently Member of Parliament for Birkenhead. He has been director of the Child Poverty Action Group and of the Low Pay Unit. He became an MP in 1979 and has served as shadow education and social security spokesman, chairman of the Social Security Select Committee, and as a member of the Public Accounts Committee. He was the minister for welfare reform in Tony Blair's first cabinet. Frank helped set up the Pension Reform Group and has chaired the Church Conservation Trust. Since 2005 he has been chairman of the Cathedral Fabrics Commission for England and in 2007 took on chairing the 2011 Trust (established to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the King James Version of the Bible).

Mike Hill

Mike is the Bishop of Bristol. After starting his working life in the printing industry, Mike joined the community at Scargill for a year in the early 1970s to test his call to ordained ministry in the Church of England. He came reluctantly at first, but he met his wife Anthea here, a nurse who had been living in Africa, and the rest is history! Mike serves on the boards of businesses, as a governor of schools and on national church bodies. He entered the House of Lords in 2009 and is a fan of Manchester United.

Paul Butler

Paul is Bishop of Durham. Prior to that he was in parish ministry and served as an area dean, as an evangelist with Scripture Union, and as chair of CMS (Church Mission Society). He has particular interests in world mission, especially in Natal, Burundi, Rwanda and Uganda. In 2004 he was asked by the Archbishop of Canterbury to be the advocate for children of behalf of the bishops. He has written several books. He and his wife have four children.

Rev Alison Roche

Alison is currently a full-time mum married to a vicar as well as being ordained herself. She is passionate about adoption, young people, urban priority areas, inclusion, Palestine, and nature; and her family loves camping at Scargill's Summerfest each year.

Rev Canon Felicity Lawson - Chairman

Job Titles:

Felicity recently retired after 17 years as a vicar of two parishes to the south of Leeds. She has a background in Vocations and Ministerial Education. She is one of the Lee Abbey representatives on Council.

Rev Caroline Hewlett

Caroline is vicar of Swaledale with Arkengarthdale, a parish in the Yorkshire Dales, a short distance north of Scargill House. She brings experience of working in urban and rural churches, and an interest in caring for the natural environment.

Rev Pete Gunstone

Pete is Canon for Worship and Nurture at Bradford Cathedral. Prior to ordination, he was a freelance musician and worship leader and was onetime a member of the community at Lee Abbey, Devon.

Rev Roberta Rominger

  • General Secretary of the United Reformed Church
Roberta is general secretary of the United Reformed Church. She has spent her entire career serving the church. She was born in New York State and grew up in California, where she obtained a BA in music. Roberta has been a URC minister in Arizona, Newcastle, Surrey and London and was previously moderator of the church's Thames North Synod. She enjoys playing the cello in chamber music ensembles. Roberta is married to a retired URC minister and lives in London.

Sheila Thompson

Job Titles:

Sheila is an accountant with her own practice, she acts as secretary to the Council. When not working she enjoys walking and being outdoors.

Simon Browning

Simon has a background in engineering and business management, having been director of several businesses and a support organisation for technology entrepreneurs. He's been involved at Scargill since its rebirth in 2009, initially full-time and since 2011 as a Working Friend.

Sister Jocelyn OHP

Job Titles:
  • Member of the Order of the Holy Paraclete
Sister Jocelyn is a member of the Order of the Holy Paraclete, Whitby. She brings prayerful experience of community life.

Stephen Weatherley

Stephen was an engineer and manager in industry for almost 40 years. He is a Lee Abbey appointee to our Council and has been instrumental in developing our business plan and the building project.

Tim Proudler

Tim has a background in planning and developing major infrastructure projects within the electricity supply industry. Scargill played an important part in his faith journey, and he has been an active Working Friend at Scargill since 2013. He is also involved with the St Oswald's Community near Whitby.

Tony Allison

Job Titles:
  • Chartered Accountant
Tony is a chartered accountant and has for many years worked as the Finance Director for a commercial property investment company. Relatively new to Scargill, he is familiar with the locality, having lived in West Yorkshire virtually all of his life.

Tony Hesselwood

Job Titles:
  • Vice Chair
Tony is a chartered accountant with involvement with Scargill Council going back to the 1980s . He was chair of Bradford Diocesan Board of Finance for over 25 years and chaired the Audit Committee of the Archbishops' Council. Currently is also a trustee of a large church academy trust in Bradford.

Warren J Smith

JP Warren was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Manchester in 2007 and is a retired businessman. He has served as a member of Manchester Council for Community Relations and in 1994 founded Progress Trust (developing initiatives throughout BME communities). His voluntary activities have been focused on social exclusion and the arts as a driver for regeneration. Among his many other contributions, Warren has been chairman of the Millennium Quarter Trust, chairman of the charity Turning Point, deputy chairman of mental health services of Salford (NHS Trust), and a member of the Greater Manchester Police Policy Committee on Drug Misuse. He is an honorary member of The Lowry and chairman of Manchester Concert Hall Trust. As Lord Lieutenant, he focuses on projects which recognise the achievements of young people, the growth of the Cadet Forces and other organisations which support young people in becoming better citizens.
