Dr Ben Milton

Dr Ben Milton qualified from Newcastle in 1996 and started the journey south. After PRHO jobs in Hull he completed a surgical rotation in Wakefield and then further posts in Leeds and York with a view to becoming an ENT surgeon. Throughout this he remained a generalist at heart and realised that a career in surgery wouldn't provide the relationships and professional satisfaction he was after, so he moved to Derbyshire in 2001 and completed the Chesterfield VTS scheme in 2003 before heading straight into partnership at Darley Dale. An early involvement in Practice Based Commissioning, initially with the High and Dales PCT and then latterly Derbyshire County PCT, built an interest in commissioning and, with the publication of the Lansley white paper in 2010, the subsequent development of CCGs. Dr Ben Milton was Chair of NDCCG in shadow form from 2011 taking it successfully through authorisation to become a statutory body in 2013 and on until the formation of Derby and Derbyshire CCG in 2019. Increasing competition for his time made the collective responsibilities of clinician, partner and CCG Chair increasingly challenging and so in 2016 he took the difficult decision to step down from his partnership. For the last 6 years he has enjoyed working as a locum GP across several practices, gaining experience of different teams and the patients they serve. For the last 18 months he has been a salaried GP at Eyam Surgery. During his time as a GP he has been Foundation programme clinical supervisor and has several clinical interests. More recently he has focussed on developing skills in health coaching to improve communication with his patients and was the Clinical Champion for patient centred care at the RCGP from 2018-2021.
