- Hygiene Specialist, Bangladesh
With years of experience in water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH), Aklima is a Hygiene Specialist with WSUP Bangladesh. Since joining WSUP in January 2017, she has dedicated herself to improving hygiene practices and promoting healthy behaviour change in underserved communities. With a Master's in Social Science from Rajshahi University, Aklima understands the social and cultural factors that impact hygiene behaviour. Her diverse experience in development organizations has equipped her with various skills, including program management, stakeholder engagement, policy and strategy development and capacity building. In the past, she has worked in different reputed national and international development organizations in water sanitation sector programs and training.
Alicia is responsible for providing cross functional management of the business support operations required for WSUP to deliver its vision and mission, including human resources, IT, and facilities. She has established and managed a number of new offices across the UK and abroad in the private and not-for-profit sectors, which has involved everything from the fit out of new office space to developing resilient systems and operating procedures.
Andy Wales is one of the most experienced Chief Sustainability Officers in the world, having led sustainability for telco BT, brewers SABMiller and ABInBev, water utility Severn Trent, and textiles firm Interface Inc. Most recently he led Global Sustainability Solutions for Accenture as they scaled up their multi-billion dollar sustainability consulting practice. He's now an independent Operations Adviser for private equity firm Advent International. Andy has sat on advisory boards for WWF, Sainsburys, the Global Innovation Fund, and the Mayor of London, and was a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader.
Anthony has led the planning, implementation and management of monitoring and evaluation systems for WSUP in Ghana since 2015. Before this, Anthony promoted healthy communities and families in Ghana by supporting other organisations to implement, monitor and evaluate systems for scaling-up high quality diagnosis and treatment services for malaria and other illnesses. Anthony is skilled in research and evaluation methodologies and documenting success stories.
Antonio Madeira Water Lead, Mozambique Antonio joined WSUP in 2013 following two years working for the water utility in Maputo, Águas da Região de Maputo. With 25 years of experience in the water sector, he is a specialist in the design, operation, execution and planning of water supply systems of varying sizes. Antonio has experience working for NGOs, governments and as a private contractor. This includes roles with WSUP, water utilities and several Mozambican construction companies.
Anzo is responsible for the strategic development of WSUP's global finance function, providing strategic support to the CEO and SMT and input to the Board, Finance and Audit Committees, and WSUP subsidiaries. Anzo ensures the group's financial systems are robust, legally compliant and support current activities and future growth plans. A law graduate and fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (FCA), Anzo began her career in audit, finance and tax at Milne Ross and KPMG then moved into senior finance roles in industry and commerce, including housing, property, retail, energy consulting, education, business membership organisations and international development. Anzo joined WSUP in February 2020 and brings a wealth of commercial, financial and legal expertise and insight to WSUP's senior leadership team.

Carmen joined WSUP in 2019 after almost 10 years working for FIPAG Beira in both projects execution and project management. During this period could work on networks design and execution, maintenance planning and supervision. As a civil engineer, she worked for 5 years managing the first NRW unit at FIPAG, acquiring during that time experience on DMA design and management, flow meters sizing and network redesign.

Claire Grisaffi is a chartered civil engineer and has worked in water and sanitation for 20 years. Claire spent several years working for engineering consultancies before moving into the development sector in 2008 and has since worked as a water and sanitation specialist and programme manager for the Red Cross, World Bank and INGOs. Claire has worked for Water & Sanitation for the Urban Poor (WSUP) since 2017, first as a Programme Director for Madagascar and Zambia and then the Task Force Director. Claire is currently working part time as Global Programmes Advisor, in parallel with a PhD at Cranfield University on the regulation of faecal sludge emptying and transport services.
David is a civil engineer specialising in water resources. After three years as a VSO volunteer in Bangladesh, David led water resource projects in Egypt, Pakistan, and India. He has worked for one of the UK's major consulting engineering companies, including managing director or chairman of the group's companies in India, China and South East Asia.

Philippa Ross is a chartered engineer and a chartered environmentalist with over 20 years' experience in the water, sanitation, and environmental sectors. She has worked internationally in across Africa and Asia. She is an experienced business and project leader and has delivered complex multi-disciplinary, multi-stakeholder high impact programmes. She can grasp complex, engineering, economic, social, and environmental concepts and produce practical and innovative solutions to difficult challenges. She has worked at policy, strategy, and implementation level with clients from private, public, and international financing institutes and organisations. In 2020 she was formally recognised as one of the top 50 women in sustainability in the UK for her work with utilities and communities in Africa. Dr Ross joined WSUP Advisory as Managing Director in February 2024.

Dr Richard Adams is Reader in Entrepreneurship at the Bettany Centre for Entrepreneurship at Cranfield University with over 30 years of experience in research, consultancy and teaching. Previously he held positions at the Universities of Surrey and Exeter, the University of the West of England and Imperial College London. His research focuses on the intersection of responsible innovation, sustainability and technology entrepreneurship. He has published widely including in the areas of social innovation, social entrepreneurship and WASH.
Ed joined WSUP as CEO in June 2022. Previously, he was a Director at Pennon Group, the owners of South West Water, Bournemouth Water, Bristol Water, and Viridor, and Executive Director of Environment and Business at the Environment Agency for nearly a decade. He was also the Director of Environment and Corporate Responsibility at Thames Water. Ed holds a Master of Science (MSc) in Water and Wastewater Engineering from Cranfield University and was previously involved with WSUP as a non-executive director following its foundation in 2005.
Elizabeth 'Beth' Prosser is Project Controller at WSUP, and joined the organisation in 2019. As a Project Controller on the Global Programmes Team Beth works across WSUP's country programmes providing advice and guidance on projects including design, implementation and reporting. She has over 6 years of experience in the WASH sector. Prior to WSUP, Beth worked on menstrual health and hygiene in India and oversaw rural waterpoint installation in Mozambique. Beth holds an MSc in Water Science & Governance from King's College London.

Emanuel is a project planning, design, and implementation specialist with over 14 years of experience in research into policy influencing, WASH business modelling, monitoring and evaluation, emergency response planning, partnership management, and organizations systems strengthening. He joined WSUP in 2016 and has served in various roles as Project Manager, Research and Policy Lead and as Kenya Country Program Coordinator. Emanuel is currently part of the Global Programmes Team, working closely with WSUP's country teams in providing technical advice and guidance on projects including design, implementation, and reporting.
Emma joined WSUP in January 2021 bringing with her more than 20 years' fundraising experience in the health and disability sectors, including over 12 years focused on international development. A new business specialist, Emma joined from the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) where for 7 years she led the management of global partnerships with foundations and created new income streams from the private sector focusing on the needs of workers in global supply chains, to fund health services, advocacy, and social and behaviour change communications. Prior to IPPF, she worked for Leonard Cheshire Disability, Whizz-Kidz and the NHS, and was in advertising sales before her move into the charity sector.

As a Project Manager, Fabio oversees coordination with stakeholders and the implementation of all project activities in the Mahajanga Urban Commune. He also works with the Boeny Regional Directorate of WASH to coordinate interventions at a regional level as co-lead of the WASH regional structure. Fabio's background is in social work. He worked as the National Coordinator of a project promoting youth-access to contraception with an international NGO before joining WSUP in 2018.

Faith is a trained water and environmental engineer with over 5 years of experience working in water and sanitation, climate change, energy, and agriculture. She has worked in projects in various countries in Africa including Kenya, Mozambique, Nigeria, Uganda, Ethiopia, and Zambia, among others, ranging from strategy development to monitoring and evaluation. Faith holds a MSc in Water Science, Policy and Management from University of Oxford and a BSc Biosystems Engineering from the University of Nairobi.
Frank joined WSUP in 2014 as a project officer and became Project Manager for Kumasi in 2016. He supports initiatives that engage local authorities, financial institutions and other private sector and community actors to improve WASH service delivery to low-income communities. Frank is passionate about initiatives that sustainably improve the lives of marginalised communities. Before joining WSUP he worked for the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations, supporting agricultural and artisanal cooperatives and credit unions.

Fátima Mussá joined WSUP in 2020. As Programme Impact Manager, she is responsible for supporting the Mozambique's Country Manager to coordinate the overall development and efficient delivery of the country programmes. Her background is Civil Engineering, followed by an MSc in Water Science and Engineering at the IHE-Delft Institute, in the Netherlands. She has more than 11 years of experience in the water sector, having worked in this field as a consultant and project manager.

He is a distinguished Community Health and Development Specialist with a wealth of expertise in WASH programming, research, monitoring, and evaluation. With over 20 years of hands-on experience, George has honed his skills and insights through extensive engagement with communities. George holds a Master's degree in Community Health and Development, further underscoring his dedication to advancing public health and community welfare. Through his strategic vision and collaborative approach, he continues to build and strengthen partnerships to ensure the effective delivery of programs aimed at improving water, sanitation, and hygiene standards across communities. He has a wealth of experience across a diverse range of fields including Faecal sludge management, monitoring and evaluation, research, and capacity building, alongside expertise in health care in emergency situations.

Gertrude Salano is a distinguished WASH Specialist and Public Policy Scholar with an impressive 21-year tenure spanning various esteemed organizations. Her expertise encompasses multiple domains, including designing and coordinating WASH interventions and spearheading efforts to mainstream gender, diversity, and social inclusion in programming initiatives. Gertrude's proficiency extends to Water Governance, financing strategies, and capacity development. Her keen focus on project monitoring, evaluation, and learning has led to developing robust Monitoring and Evaluation frameworks and systems. Presently, Gertrude serves as a Sanitation Lead with WSUP, where she continues to drive impactful change and innovation in sanitation and water management. With her wealth of experience and dedication to excellence, Gertrude remains a driving force in advancing WASH and gender empowerment initiatives in Kenya.

Irene has a background in social development. She worked with CARE International from 1997 to 2018, when she joined WSUP, initially as a Hygiene Manager. She currently holds the position of Programme Officer within WSUP.
Jane Olley is an Environmental Sanitation Specialist with 28 years' experience working on sanitation and solid waste sector projects in low- and middle-income countries. She has worked for International Finance Institutions, UN Agencies, private sector consultancies and international non-governmental organisations. She has extensive experience in the management of complex multi-country, multi-stakeholder development projects and programmes in Africa, Asia, Latin America, North and Eastern Europe. She has worked as Technical Manager with WSUP Advisory since 2016 and oversees its portfolio of sanitation projects.

Jeremy started at WSUP in 2016. His current role involves leading the strategic development of the six WSUP country programmes. Having started out as an engineer, Jeremy's career has developed with roles in the commercial, public and non-profit sectors. This includes time with the Department for International Development, and as a CEO for a UK NGO, during which time he completed a management degree.
Water & Sanitation for the Urban Poor (WSUP) was the brainchild of Jeremy Pelczer, former CEO of Thames Water, and the late Richard Sandbrook, co-founder of Friends of the Earth.
Jo is a chartered civil engineer and has worked in the utility industry for over 40 years with various UK water companies and in overseas missions. She currently works as an independent consultant specialising in the management of distribution assets. She was awarded the MBE for services to the water industry in 1995 and actively collaborates with professional organisations including the Institution of Civil Engineers and the International Water Association. Jo consults regularly for WSUP Advisory.

Julie is responsible for coordinating and implementing the WSUP Madagascar programme. She joined WSUP in 2009 as a Project Coordinator and was promoted to her current role in 2013. Julie has a civil engineering and project management background and has previously managed operations for public infrastructure authorities in Madagascar.

Karl is Executive Director - Head of Health, Safety, & Wellbeing at FYLD. Previously, he was the Chief Health, Safety & Security Officer at Thames Water and was responsible for the strategic direction and development of these. He has 25 years of experience in industry, having worked across all continents and numerous safety critical industries including oil, gas, minerals, rail, construction and utilities.
Lesley joined WSUP in February 2021. Her role is to strengthen strategic partnerships with a focus on trusts and foundations. She has over 13 years of experience in international development including three years based in East Africa. Before joining WSUP, Lesley worked as Senior Programme Coordinator for Africa Educational Trust managing a portfolio of complex projects in East and Horn of Africa. She holds an MSc in Environmental Resource Management and Development from the University of Wales, Swansea.

Lillian has over 20 years' professional work experience in both rural and urban water and sanitation sub sector. She has worked with water production systems (piped and point), distribution and wastewater treatment plants. She has experience in establishing quality management systems and water safety plans in utility service from the practice with National water and sewerage corporation in Uganda. Lillian has served in several leadership roles including leading the technical and area teams for Jinja Area; before joining SNV Uganda where she adopted the advisory and systems strengthening approaches. Having worked with decentralised local governments she has a vast understanding of governance systems in Uganda. Lillian is passionate about delivering sustainable solutions especially embedding innovations in the routines of service delivery. As such her quest to unlearn, learn and re learn never fades. Lisa joined WSUP in July 2023 as the People & Support Manager supporting the business operations for WSUP, globally. Lisa is a qualified HR professional with over 15 years operational experience in the Charity sector.
The Rt Hon Lord Paul Boateng DL PC is a Member of the House of Lords. He was formerly in the UK Cabinet as Chief Secretary to HM Treasury and UK High Commissioner to South Africa. He is currently Chairman of the Africa Enterprise Challenge Fund based in Nairobi and is on the Board of the London based Ghana International Bank. He is Chair of a number of charities working in Africa including BookAid International and the International Council of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award.

Louise is an experienced consultant working on water and sanitation projects across the Middle East, Africa and Southeast Asia. She is a Chartered Mechanical Engineer with previous experience working in the design of water and wastewater infrastructure, as well as experience working in a humanitarian context for the International Committee of the Red Cross. Louise is passionate about developing the WASH sector's response to climate change and understanding the enabling environment needed to achieve universal access to water and sanitation. She is enthusiastic about developing evidence-based approaches to tackling climate change, with a focus on technical innovation for a sustainable future.
Luc is a former auditor and has a background in finance and accounting. He joined WSUP in 2017 as a finance assistant in Madagascar and was promoted to his current role in 2021.

Lucilia has 17 years' experience in administration, including experience in WASH, education, health and also in private sector business administration.

Mamitiana Razafimanantsoa Project Manager, Madagascar Mamitiana joined WSUP in April 2018 as a Project Manager. He coordinates interventions and collaborates with partners and stakeholders in the WASH sector in the city of Tulear. With a background in sociology, Mamitiana has worked on a range of development projects implemented by national and international NGOs. Before joining WSUP he worked as a Food Security Project Coordinator across several sectors including WASH.
Maksudur Rahman is a seasoned professional with eighteen years of expertise in program support. As a key decision-maker within WSUP Bangladesh since May 2013, he plays a pivotal role in program operation and management. Prior to joining WSUP, Maksudur contributed his skills to various national and international non-profit organizations, including CARE, HASAB, and IDSL. With a strong foundation in accounting and finance, Maksudur possesses three years of hands-on experience in Audit and Assurance services with a Chartered Accountancy Firm. His dedication to humanitarian causes led him to focus his career on supporting those in need of better livelihoods and basic human necessities. Maksudur holds a Master of Commerce in Accounting with honors from the National University and has pursued partial certifications in Chartered Accountancy (CA) and Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA). Mohammad Fahim Sayeed specializes in project monitoring, evaluation, and impact assessment with over 4 years of experience. He's worked on diverse projects including women's empowerment, climate change, CPiE, rural justice, gender, food security, and migration. Since joining WSUP in 2023 as an M&E Officer, Fahim has coordinated monitoring activities and leads report writing in Bangladesh. Previously, he served as a Senior Research Officer at DM WATCH, Pedagogical Affairs Officer at FAOU, and Intern at BRAC. Fahim holds M.S.S and B.S.S in International Relations from the University of Chittagong, along with various licenses and certifications, including a diploma in French language.

Khorshed 's professional journey has equipped him with extensive knowledge and practical experience across various development domains, including gender, education, entrepreneurship development, women's empowerment, and livelihood enhancement. Nerea is an M&E expert with 7 years of experience in the WASH sector, specialised in the design and implementation of Citywide Water and Sanitation Service Delivery Assessments to inform strategic and inclusive planning. She is passionate about using digital tools to help closing the data gap in water and sanitation to increase access among vulnerable and excluded populations. Nerea has previously worked in the Evaluation, Research & Learning team of WSUP, where she led the development of WSUP´s Citywide Survey Methodology and provided technical support to M&E initiatives across WSUP programme countries. As a consultant, Nerea has worked in projects in Angola, Uganda, India, Malawi, and Nigeria among other countries. She has a background in science, R&D and Innovation in the private sector in Spain and Belgium. She holds a Bachelor in Biochemistry from the University of Navarra and a Master in Global Health from the University of Barcelona.

Peter is Director of the CARE USA Water Team and his current work includes increased engagement with private entrepreneurs in rural WASH and mobilizing investment into rain-fed agriculture in Sub-Saharan Africa. Previously Peter worked for the World Bank's Water and Sanitation Program and then with the WSP Regional Water and Sanitation Group for South Asia.

Philip has been leading WSUP's interventions in Mombasa and Malindi since 2013. He has extensive experience in institutional pro-poor capacity set-up and support, brokering complex neighbourhood and city-wide agreements intended to improve access to water and sanitation for the base of pyramid consumers. He previously worked at a number of non-profit organisations where he led teams in developing and managing WASH projects in relief and emergency response contexts.

Polly joined WSUP as Head of Partnerships and Communications in June 2022. She has over twenty years of experience in non-profit communication with the international humanitarian agency Médecins Sans Frontières, including eight years as Director of Communications for MSF UK & Ireland. Since leaving the humanitarian aid world in 2017 she has been working in the waste and recycling sector, both in the UK and overseas, managing communications projects from Camden to Congo. This has given her exposure to stakeholders and sectors highly relevant to WSUP's work including service delivery, the private sector, the non-profit world, and public education. She has a track record of leading successful behavioural change campaigns as well as managing high profile media issues, and securing project funding.

Pritum Saha Monitoring, Evaluation, Research, and Learning Manager Pritum is an Urban WASH Professional with over 10 years experience in result measurement, evaluation, learning, knowledge management, research management, research coordination and qualitative & quantitative assessment. He currently leads the country's M&E of WSUP in Bangladesh, alongside managing in-country research activities. Pritum looks to support the implementation of field testing and or respective activities under the research components. In addition, Pritum coordinates with internal & external colleagues which include non-profit counterparts, universities, research entities, government bodies etc. Prior to joining WSUP, Pritum managed similar portfolios for not for profits based in UK & Netherlands.

Reuben has managed the WSUP Zambia programme since 2008 and has over 17 years' experience in water and sanitation service delivery, working with the government and its mandated service delivery institutions. Before joining WSUP, Reuben worked in WASH consulting services, helping deliver a number of government programmes that targeted poor communities across Zambia. He has managed the establishment of the only faecal sludge management model in Zambia serving the urban poor.
Richard has been Team Leader for a number of key WSUP Advisory projects focusing on WASH planning and strategy development at national level. He was previously WSUP Programme Director for Kenya and Zambia. His background is in Civil, Water and Environmental Engineering, and Institutional Development. He has 10 years of experience with African utilities, as well as broader experience in Africa, Middle East, Asia, Eastern Europe and Central America.

Rose is a seasoned accountant with a strong background in the non-governmental organization (NGO) sector. She holds an Associate Degree in Accounting from Uganda Christian University (formerly Uganda Catholic Social Training Centre) and a Master's Degree in Finance and Administrative Management with a specialization in Financial Reporting and Risk Management from NIBM. Additionally, Rose has partial accreditation from the Association of Chartered Accountants (ACCA). To further enhance her skills, she has pursued studies in Digital Finance and participated in various USAID and DFID trainings tailored for non-profit organizations. This specialized training has equipped her with the expertise to effectively address the unique financial challenges faced by NGOs.

is an urban WASH professional with over 10 years' experience in urban WASH research, programme evaluation and peer-to-peer learning. He holds organisation-wide responsibility for the Evaluation, Research and Learning function at WSUP. While at WSUP Sam has supported the rollout of research programmes across WSUP's seven programme countries, authored or edited over 60 WSUP technical publications, and led research studies for World Bank, WHO, ESAWAS and UN Habitat among others. Prior to joining WSUP, Sam worked as Analyst in the Evaluation and Performance Management team at RAND Europe. This built on experience with the learning and development team at the UK Institute for Government.

Samuel is a dedicated, organised, and methodical individual, with a good interpersonal skill, an excellent team worker, keen and very willing to learn and develop new skills. He joined WSUP in 2013 as programmes facilitator and currently work as Project Lead based in Kumasi, Ghana. Samuel is responsible for delivery of WASH infrastructure and services and the establishment of effective and sustainable management model in low-income communities. Before joining WSUP, Samuel worked for CARE International as Project Officer on several programme initiatives and projects, in education, agriculture, health, water, and sanitation. Samuel's greatest passion in life is using his professional know-how, experiences, and skills to benefit other people and organisations.

Sylvie is responsible for overall management, coordination and implementation of the WSUP Madagascar programme. She has been with WSUP in this role since 2009 and through it coordinates closely with institutional partners, the local authority and with the national water utility. Her previous experience is as a Project Manager with international NGOs in Antananarivo and prior to which she was responsible for the Research and Development Department of the agency for public infrastructure in Madagascar.
As a WASH Engineer at WSUP, Tahia is responsible for planning and enhancing the effectiveness of WASH interventions, focusing on safe water and sanitation access for low-income urban communities. Her experience extends to various aspects of the WASH field, including Citywide Inclusive Sanitation, Fecal Sludge Management, Occupational Health and Safety of Waste and Sanitation Workers, Climate Change, Emergency Response, and Waste management. She approaches her work with a holistic perspective, recognizing the critical interplay between technical solutions and community engagement. Prior to joining WSUP, she served as a Research Associate in BMGF-funded projects at ITN-BUET. She holds a Bachelor's in Civil Engineering and a Master's in Environment Management.

Tara has been with WSUP since 2019, and currently heads the Global Programmes Team working closely with WSUP's country teams providing advice and guidance on projects including design, implementation and reporting, alongside the Project Controllers in her team. Following an MSc at Cranfield University in Community Water and Sanitation, Tara went on to spend 9 years overseas as a WASH Project Manager, WASH Advisor, and Emergency Director with multiple NGOs including ACF and Concern Worldwide in both humanitarian response and international development settings, in Asia, the Middle East and sub-Saharan Africa. Tara also spent 4 years working in Environmental Regulation with the UK Environment Agency.
With over 30 years' experience in water sector projects in sub-Saharan Africa, Europe, South East Asia and Latin America, Tim has worked with NGOs, UN agencies and private sector consultants in both development and humanitarian relief. He has worked with WSUP since 2006, having previously acted as Programme Director for WSUP programmes in Ghana, Mali and Zambia. During this time he has developed a solid understanding of strategies to address the challenges faced by service providers in meeting the water and sanitation needs of low-income urban communities.

Ulrike Sapiro is Chief Sustainability Officer at Henkel AG & Co. KGaA, an internationally operating DAX-40 company based in Duesseldorf, Germany, and active in consumer products for laundry and personal care as well as industrial technologies with high-tech adhesives and sealants. In her role, Ulrike reports to the board and - together with her team - develops and oversees corporate sustainability strategy, governance, reporting and disclosure as well as external and internal engagement. She is working closely across the business on implementation and ESG data management program. In 2022, Henkel launched its new 2030+ Sustainability Ambition Framework and worldwide employee engagement and upskilling hub. Prior to joining Henkel, Ulrike spent 13 years in several sustainability leadership roles at The Coca-Cola Company on global and European level. Before joining Coca-Cola, she held sustainability and external affairs roles at RWE Thames Water, a UK-based private water and wastewater company. Ulrike holds a Master's degree in Political Science from the University of Munich. In 2022, she was recognized as one of the Global Top 100 Sustainability Leaders.

A holder of a Master of Science in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, complemented by certifications in project management and urban poverty reduction, Uttam is equipped to lead urban water, sanitation, waste management, and renewable energy initiatives. In addition, he has a good understanding of WASH governance and its context in South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa.
A civil engineer by profession, Yaver has over 35 years of consulting engineering and business leadership experience in North America, Europe, the Middle East, South Asia and Africa. His expertise includes strategy, corporate governance, business planning, leadership and the planning, financing, design and management of infrastructure projects. Yaver holds a MS in management from the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University and is a Licensed Professional Engineer.
