C. Ian Smith

Ian Smith was trained as a metallurgist, and worked in the Research Department of British Steel Corporation on both development of new steels for use in construction and the application of fire engineering in the design of steel structures. He has worked on a number of British and International Standard Committees related to fire design and fire testing.

L. Clive Newman

Clive Newman was trained as an architect and worked in private practice, mainly in the commercial and industrial field. In 1981 he joined a leading international fire protection company where he became involved in product development designed to meet specific fire risks in buildings. In 1986 he was appointed as Technical Director of the company, a position he held until joining FiSEC in 1994. During this period he was responsible for developing solutions to a wide range of fire related problems and for testing and certification of products to meet local legislative requirements around the world. He is a member of, or chairs, a number of industry based technical committees, some of which have an international base He is an expert member of several fire related British Standard Committees and has been a contributor to numerous technical publications.

Simon J. Ham

Simon Ham trained as an architect and developed his knowledge of fire safety design largely whilst employed by Nottinghamshire County Council, as "fire architect", following the Fairfield Elderly Persons Home fire in which 19 people died. He was the only fire consultant appointed to the Building Regulations Advisory Committee, the statutory committee that advises the Secretary of State for the Environment on building regulation matters between July 1983 and December 1995. He also served on the Department of the Environment Fire Advisory Panel until it was wound up in 1998. He was a BRE/Fire Research Station Visitor from 1988 - 1993 responsible for advising the Chief Executive on the quality and application of the work of the Establishment and on the standing of its technical capabilities in scientific and professional forums. He has represented the Royal Institute of British Architects on a number of British Standard Committees concerned with fire design and testing. He was a founding member of the Society of Fire Safety Engineers and was a member of the Council of the Institute of Fire Safety formed through a merger between the Society of Fire Safety Engineers and the former UK Chapter of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers. He has practised as an independent fire consultant since 1984 working on a number of major building projects mostly but not exclusively within the United Kingdom. He has also undertaken research projects for the Department of the Environment and N.H.S.
