AGI - Key Persons


Adam Burke

With a passion for geography, Adam studied Physical Geography and Earth Sciences at Aberystwyth University, followed by an Msc in GIS and Remote Sensing. After graduating in 2010 Adam started his career working in GIS within the public sector, firstly as a GIS technician at Powys County Council, and then the GIS Officer at Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council. In 2017 Adam joined Natural Resources Wales as the Geospatial Lead, working within the knowledge and information management group. With a keen interest in project management and change management, Adam is leading on the GIS strategy and implementation plan for Natural Resources Wales. Adam has been heavily involved with AGI Cymru and was the national group chair from 2018-2020. As a chartered Geographer and a Fellow of the Royal Geographic Society he enjoys the outdoors and can often be found roaming the Brecon Beacons National Park at weekends.

Alan Moore - Treasurer

An advocate of open source geospatial technologies, Alan Moore is Head of Geospatial Services with Idox and has an extensive career in the geospatial industry across the public and private sector. He is also a member of the National Group, AGI Scotland, and represents those interests on AGI Council alongside the wider landscape.

Alex Donald

Alex is a geology graduate from Queen's University, Belfast and has worked at the Geological Survey of Northern Ireland since 2003. He worked on the Tellus project and has been involved in data delivery, data management and information products including the publications A Guide to the Tellus Data and Unearthed . He has a particular interest in urban geology and was involved in the delivery of the EU TU1206 COST Sub-Urban project www.sub-urban.eu .

Amelia Baptie

As a Geographer and GIS Professional Amelia is passionate about working with others to deliver the benefits of location data and location data technologies. As a Senior Project Manager at the British Geological Survey Amelia has over 20 years' experience in the location data field working within industry and public sector agencies. This experience ranges from large scale project management, leadership in skills sharing and development, digital transformation using location data technologies and working collaboratively with stakeholders in the UK and Europe to unlock the full potential of location data.

Andrew Cameron

Andrew has over 12 years of professional experience in the Geographic Information (GI) industry, primarily through his career at The Crown Estate. He has held diverse roles within the sector, encompassing both business partnering and project delivery, and as a leader has steered the delivery of spatial services and projects in alignment with both Digital and Corporate strategies, and taken a leading role in the build out of a broader Data and Analytics function.

Andrew Paul - Chairman

Andrew is currently the Spatial NI manager at Ordnance Survey Northern Ireland (OSNI). Andrew has 10 years' experience in the geospatial industry. After completing an MSc in GIS at Ulster University. Starting his career as a GIS Officer at the Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute on the DOLMANT Project, Andrew joined OSNI in 2013 where he has worked since. First training as an aerial surveyor and photogrammetrist. Andrew's main interests are in remote sensing and 3D geospatial data and how they can be used to help improve data collection and analysis.

Bruce Gittings

Bruce Gittings is a Senior Lecturer in Geographical Information at the University of Edinburgh, and delivers courses on technological topics as part of a world-leading Master's programme in GIS. He became a Web-GIS pioneer in the mid-1990s, bringing leading web sites such as The World-Wide Earthquake Locator and The Gazetteer for Scotland to the Internet. He has been involved with AGI Scotland since its inception in 1999, Vice Chair from 2007 and Chair from 2016. He has also served as Vice Chair of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society and Chair of the GIS Research UK conference series. He has worked closely with the GI industry on a number of projects and also helped shape geographical information policy within the Scottish Government and its agencies. He explores Scotland regularly and has written extensively about its people and places as part of his Gazetteer for Scotland. He has visited the most easterly, westerly, northerly and southerly points of the Scotland (Out Skerries, St Kilda, Herma Ness on Unst and the Mull of Galloway) and driven an Edinburgh tram.

Charles Kennelly

David R Green

Past Chairman of the Association for Geographic Information (AGI) David is a specialist in the environmental applications of geospatial technologies with interests in geographical information systems, remote sensing (terrestrial and bathymetric), UAV/UAS technology, cartography/digital mapping, Internet and mobile GIS, Precision Viticulture (PV), coastal and marine resource management, hydrography, and marine spatial planning (MSP), He has published a number of books on Coastal Zone Management, Geographical Information Systems (GIS), GIS in School Education, and UAV applications. David is also Editor in Chief of the Journal of Coastal Conservation, Planning and Management (Springer), and Associate Editor of the Unmanned Aerial Systems Journal (Frontiers).

Denise McKenzie

Denise McKenzie is an international geospatial policy and strategy professional with a speciality in community building and public/private partnership. Currently she is a co-Director of the Benchmark Initiative operating through Ordnance Survey's Geovation accelerator and undertaking a Masters in Sustainability at the University of Southampton. In the broader geospatial community, she is part of the steering committee for Women in Geospatial+ and an advisory board member for the Location Based Marketing Association. Previously she has worked with the Victorian State Government in Australia and as the Head of Outreach at OGC where she led work such as the UNGGIM Geospatial Standards Guides.

Dominic Cuthbert

Dominic is a Strategic Development Manager with over 25 years' experience in the Geospatial community. Initially working in the satellite and aerial imaging arena where he was a Director for Earth Resource Mapping, he moved to the OS in July 2002. Dominic has held a number of roles within the OS including product development, partner management and strategic stakeholder engagement. Throughout his career he has worked primarily within the Local and Central Government community developing applications and solutions to maximise the use of geographic data to a wider audience. In 2009 he negotiated the One Scotland Mapping Agreement (OSMA) with Scottish Government and since then he has been working closely across this broad community to deliver core statutory and policy support, develop collaborative solutions and , where possible, develop AGI awareness.

Dr Cameron Easton

Cameron holds the degrees of Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Glasgow. Following research in insect ecology he worked in nature conservation for the Wildlife Trusts and the Nature Conservancy Council, latterly Scottish Natural Heritage. He joined the Scottish Government as Ecological Adviser and, in support of environmental policy established the Scottish Government's Geographic Information Service. He transferred to geographic information full time as Head of Spatial Information Policy. In that role he implemented the European INSPIRE Directive, transposing the Directive into Scottish legislation, and created Scotland's Spatial Data Infrastructure. He is an Honorary Senior Lecturer in the University of Glasgow, where has taught for nearly 40 years and since retirement is affiliated to the University's Scottish Centre for Ecology and the Natural Environment. He is also a visiting lecturer at the University of Edinburgh and Napier University.

Dr Lorraine Barry

Lorraine Barry is a Transport Planner and Modeller within the Department for Infrastructure and has over 20 years experience as a Geographical Information Scientist with a background in GIS for teaching, training and research. Lorraine has developed many years of experience in FOSS4G (Free and Open Source for Geospatial) and python programming for geographical data science and geo-visualisation. Lorraine enjoys continuously learning and developing in the field of GI Science. She graduated from Queen's University Belfast with a BSc in Geography in 2001 and from the University of Leeds in 2003 with an MA distinction in GIS for Business and Service Planning.

Dr Sara Stewart

Sara is a geospatial consultant with over ten years of experience within the geospatial industry across academic, public sector and international settings. She brings broad experience of harnessing the value of geospatial data to generate new insights, support decision-making and policy development at strategic levels across a variety of sectors including education, health, emergency preparedness and response, cultural heritage, and asset management. She currently acts as a consultant for an intergovernmental organisation where she is leading an EU-funded project to develop capacity in the integration of statistical and geospatial data in support of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, working with a range of national and intergovernmental organisations across Europe. Sara is a board member of the AGI Northern Ireland and will bring the views of the region to the AGI Council. She hopes to actively support the Council and its mission of "putting geospatial at the heart of a sustainable future".

Dr Tim Duffy

Dr Tim Duffy has worked for the British Geological Survey for 30+ years as a GIS leader involved with international Geographic Information data exchange standards and metadata and recently retired as Head of Geoscience Interoperability having led the global geology mapping project OneGeology. He is now engaged in Biodiversity and Geoscience initiatives that can ever increasingly benefit from GI. He has been an AGI Scotland board member since the first Scottish Geospatial Strategy was published and hopes to help with the enactment of a proposed new one.

Dr. Michael Groves FRGS

He is the founder of Topolytics, a data analytics company that uses mapping and machine learning to make the world's waste visible, verifiable and valuable.

Esther Ogbu

Esther is a Project Management and Business Development Professional with over 8 years' varied global experience and a focus in geospatial and digital transformation. Currently working as a Project Manager in Esri UK, Esther manages a team to implement geospatial solutions that help organisations in the Utility and Telecommunications sector make more efficient use of their geospatial strategy and/or technology. Esther is actively involved in the geospatial community and building relationships across the industry globally and is keen to promote diversity and inclusivity for women in the geospatial industry hence her volunteer contributions to the Women+ in Geospatial and African Women in GIS Communities. Esther has an interest in influencing younger individuals to be associated with the community through supporting the Early Career Network, but also to consider improving the racial diversity of black geospatial professionals in the UK.

Fergus Craig

I believe the AGI has the capacity to support a sustainable future through the use of technology. Working together is key in achieving goals, at an organisational level, those that collaborate and partner, make a stronger community, which is why I am enthusiastic to be more involved with the AGI and support the progress of the geospatial sector. I graduated with a degree in GIS with Business Management and held several technical GI roles before being moving to the commercial side when I joined MapMechanics (now CACI). I then spent 13 years at the GIS and Web Mapping developer, Cadcorp, in various business development, account management and partner roles across several sectors. In 2018 I graduated with a Master of Business Administration (MBA) further building and developing my business skills. I'm looking forward to bringing my academic, technical, and commercial skills to the AGI to progress the organisation to ensure it continues to support the GI community and beyond.

Gareth Young

Gareth has worked for Ordnance Survey Northern Ireland (OSNI) for over 10 years and has a wealth of knowledge and experience using geographical information within the public sector. He has managed the development and growth of OSNI's web mapping platform and currently holds a role advising on the technical integration of OSNI geospatial information within other public sector IT systems. He graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Geography from Queen's University Belfast in 2001 followed by an MSc (Distinction) in Geographical Information Systems from Ulster University in 2002. He is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, a Chartered Geographer (CGeog) with specialism in GIS and has served on the AGI Northern Ireland committee since 2014.

George Firth

He entered the geospatial field after studying at the Defence School of Geospatial Intelligence, after which he spent over eight years working within Defence, including the Defence Geographic Centre in London, before moving to the private sector. George is a Chartered Geographer (GIS) and Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.

Gillian Dick

Gillian is the Manager of Spatial Planning - Research & Development team within the Development Plan Group at Glasgow City Council. She has a BSc (Hons) in Town Planning from Heriot-Watt University and BSc (Hons) in Human Geography from the Open University. She is a chartered member of the Royal Town Planning Institute and currently the Chair of the Partnership and Accreditation Panel. Gillian is also the RTPI nominate rep on the Technical University Dublin Partnership Board, where she is the vice-chair and she previously had a similar role with Queens University Belfast.

Ian Maxfield

Ian is a Geographer with over 18 years' experience working in the geospatial industry. He is Associate Head of Geographic Intelligence for NHS SCW CSU - a role he is proud of, using GIS to support the NHS and improve the health of the general public. Moreover he has lectured at a number of universities, in addition to a previous life as a secondary school Geography teacher. He has a general passion for all things geospatial, with a particular focus on the development of GIS as a career for students.

James Reid

John Eltham

John made extensive use of GI as part of his 27-year career as a public sector town planner, before moving to work full-time in the GI industry in 2018. He is currently the GIS Manager at Fibrus; a Belfast based telecommunications infrastructure company delivering full fibre hyperfast broadband to towns, villages, and rural communities across Northern Ireland. John previously worked for the Department of the Environment in various planner roles in Belfast, Craigavon, Downpatrick and Ballymena, and was the Senior Planning Officer in Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council's Development Plan Team. His GI career has seen him provide freelance and contract work for a range of clients and as a part-time GIS Consultant in the National Trust. In his spare time. he continues to do freelance planning, urban design, and GI work as the PUDSI social enterprise.

John Hewitt

John has over 15 years experience in the GI field and is currently a Senior GI Consultant with the SOPRA Group. He is mad about GI, especially all things open.

John Seabourn

John Seabourn has been integral in the development of NSTA's Digital Energy Platform, providing data services to industry, government, academia and the public. The platform has rapidly grown since 2016 attracting investment into the UK Continental Shelf, supporting the Energy Transition and providing resources to develop the next generation of energy data professionals.

Jonathan Hardman

Jonny has worked in the GI industry since 2011. His first job was as a GIS Intern for a local further education college. Since graduating from Ulster University in 2013 with a BSc. in Geography, Jonny has worked as a GI Specialist for a regional canal charity as well as in the private sector. He currently works for the Ordnance Survey Northern Ireland (OSNI) as a GI Consultant dedicated to the Department of Health (DoH), where he provides consultancy services and advice to DoH, Health and Social Care Trusts, as well as regional and cross-border government agencies. Jonny is also the current Communications Coordinator for the AGI Northern Ireland group and Northern Ireland's representative at AGI Council.

Kenna Dallaway

Laurence Donaghy

In previous careers Laurence has been a secondary school Science & Geography teacher, Deputy Project Manager within Northern Ireland Water delivering the ADAI project, Project Manager for a not for profit education charity delivering STEM programmes for young people of all ages within NI and he has also been a Laboratory Manager and an Environmental Educator. Laurence has a keen commitment to the furthering of the GIS sector and supporting development of GI professionals and sits on the AGI NI committee.

Liz Scott

Liz has worked as a geospatial consultant for over twenty years, having come from a background in IT support and engineering rather than geography. Previously an OS accredited consultant within the OS partner community, her experience has been gained from advising customers across industry, government and utilities, co-creating data products, and working alongside partners many of whom are fellows in the geospatial industry. Now a geospatial solutions architect at the Satellite Applications Catapult, Liz works with organisations and start-ups wishing to explore how they can maximise use and sharing of earth observation data. Being relatively new to the EO sector herself, she is aware of the challenges faced by geospatial professionals needing to gain the skills and knowledge to work with these new data streams. Liz is looking forward to actively organising opportunities through AGI for learning together with those across the geospatial sector who want to expand their data horizons into space.

Malcolm Calvert

Malcolm is a Chartered Engineer and Member of the British Computer Society. He has over 20 years experience of working with Geographical Information Systems, and is currently in charge of the Modelling & Mapping Unit within DARD Rivers Agency. The Unit are responsible for river & coastal modelling and production of flood maps; and for corporate GI management within the Agency.

Mark McLauchlan

Mark gained his MSc in Geographic Information Systems from Edinburgh University in 1995. Spending much of his career in Financial Services, he started his own technology consultancy in 2015. In addition to performing technology reviews and due diligence for private equity funded clients, Mark works with a portfolio of start-up businesses in the role of CTO. He is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and an Honorary Fellow in the School of GeoSciences at The University of Edinburgh where he lectures on the MSc Geographical Information Science course. Mark's research interests include GIS, cloud computing and geospatial data processing, and geodata in business.

Mark Stileman

Joining Ordnance Survey in 2000 Mark worked in a variety of roles spanning research and innovation, data capture, product management, bid management and proposition development. Currently he leads a small team which is developing propositions for the public sector in the context of the Public Sector Geospatial Agreement. Alongside his day job Mark is an assessor for the RGS's Chartered Geographer accreditation, and sits on the advisory board for Southampton University's School of Geography and Environmental Science. Having been part of the AGI's GeoCom planning committee, Mark would like to play an active role on AGI Council giving something back to the profession that has enriched him personally and would like to help to identify ways that we can develop AGI's role in supporting careers, and particular to explore synergy with the Chartered Geographer initiative.

Mayuko Morgan

Murray Roden

Murray is a geospatial professional who has been working in the industry for over 25 years and joined the AGI Scotland group in 2020. With a keen passion for all things geo and spreading the word about the benefits that it can bring to any organisation and also loves experimenting with latest geospatial technology. He studied Geography at Glasgow followed by a MSc in GIS at the University of Edinburgh and has had many geospatial related roles over the years from developer to consultant to project and engagement manager. He works for Esri UK and is currently helping organisations realise the potential that geospatial can provide.

Nikki Smith

Nikki is a senior GIS specialist with a degree in Geology and Master's degree in Environmental Remote Sensing, geospatial information has been integral to her work for many years . Her work at the BGS had been focused on the design, development and implementation of custom geospatial data capture and delivery systems as well as the design and implementation of digital data workflows. Nikki also enjoys working overseas and has worked in Central, East and South East Asia, Africa, and Europe. In recent years Nikki has become heavily involved in overseas development assistance work, engaging with overseas partners to develop sustainable digital solutions, in particular working with partners to help them recognise the value, importance and potential of the spatial data that they hold. Nikki joined the AGI Scotland Committee in 2017 and has been involved in the organization of the annual events in 2018, 2019 and 2020.

Pam Whitham

Pam has over 20 years' experience with Ordnance Survey in providing support for the use of Public Sector Geospatial Mapping Data to underpin policy in Wales and England with a particular focus on Housing and Land Administration. Pam has previously been Chair of AGI Cymru and has been an active member of the AGI Cymru committee for many years.

Patrick McGarry

Patrick is the Infrastructure Digital Project Manager in Translink, the public transport provider for Northern Ireland. He is responsible for the Asset Information Management Strategy for Translink, which aims to help staff access the highest quality of asset information via innovative applications in order to make more informed, effective decision making, reduce operational costs and improve customer services. This will encompass the implementation, development and integration of applications such as GIS, BIM, Data Analytics and Asset Information Systems.

Peter Green

Originally hailing from Nova Scotia, Canada, Peter has been involved in the GI field for more than 20 years with expertise in GIS, earth observation and land use planning. He has acquired and applied his knowledge and skills in a range of different areas, including telecom, oil and gas, marine, agriculture, international development and conservation planning within private, public and non-profit sectors.Peter studied Geography at the Saint Mary's University, followed by completing an Advanced Diploma in GIS/RS from the Centre of Geographic Sciences and an MSc in GIS from the University of Edinburgh. In 2020 Peter joined the City of Edinburgh Council Estates team as a data control officer. He has been volunteering with the AGI Scotland committee since 2020.

Rachel Steenson

Rachel's IT career has up until very recently been in the field of GIS. She started her GIS career at Ordnance Survey Northern Ireland, where she held a number of roles including LPIS Project Manager, Positional Improvement Project Manager and Mapping System and Contract Manager. She then went on to work at Esri Ireland first as a Customer Success Manager where she managed a number of large-scale corporate GIS implementations for customers such as Northern Ireland Water and Gas Networks Ireland and then as their Market Engagement Manager where she had overall responsibility for market development in Northern Ireland. She is currently a Business Development Manager for Civica where she helps the NI public sector deliver digital services for all citizens in Northern Ireland.

Richard Flemmings

I have over 20 years' experience working across the geospatial sector. My background includes managing airborne surveys in remote parts of Africa, delivering complex and multi-faceted national mapping projects, and more recently, using satellite remote sensing data to solve challenging environmental problems. I'm excited to be part of the AGI council and being involved in a thriving geospatial community. Working alongside like minded people, I hope that my experiences can contribute to wider geospatial advocacy, and the core mission of AGI. I am particularly passionate about applying geospatial data to support societal and environmental sustainability, and intend to use my position on the AGI council to continue to influence technology development in the right way.

Rico Santiago

Rico was Northern Ireland Chair Committee from 2016-2023 and now supports the new Chair in this role as Vice Chair. With over 15 years' experience providing GI services in both public and private sectors in the United States and Northern Ireland. He enjoys his current role as the Deputy Head of Business Development at the Ordnance Survey of Northern Ireland, where he's able to leverage mapping, location data, and GI innovation to support the delivery of government and public services. Graduating from the University of California (UCSB) with a Master's degree in Environmental Science and Management, and a Bachelor's degree in Geography, he has a deep interest in the application of geospatial technologies for the public good.

Ryland Karlovich

Ryland is a keen enthusiast for geography, cartography, GIS and technical software solutions. He studied Geography at Humboldt State University in California before gaining an MSc in Geographical Information Science at the University of Edinburgh. After a placement at thinkWhere in Stirling, he began his current role at Informed Solutions where he has further developed a passion for software development and technical projects where geographic data and analysis play a key role. He is now involved in technical project delivery in projects large and small across a variety of sectors. He joined the AGI Scotland Committee in 2017 and has been heavily involved in organising AGI Scotland's annual events in 2018 and 2019.

Sam Tizzard

Having been involved with Geography and GIS since his teens, undertaking a BSc in Geography and Natural Hazards and an MSc in Volcanology and Geological Hazards. This sparked a fascination with GIS leading Sam to become a Junior GIS Officer at Harrow Council. During my last 7 years at Harrow Council I have grown and progressed, building the GIS Team into a well utilised corporate resource and diversifying the team into data automation, processing and analysis to better support Council functions. Sam strongly believes in the AGI's missions; GI has a vital role to play in future sustainability and is a worthy mission to undertake. Aiming to share best practice and ensuring that the GI industry has staff skilled enough to continue moving forwards are pivotal to the future of the UK as a GI leader.

Simon Roberts

Simon is a Data and Engagement Strategist working for the local government. His main role, working on their Spatial Hub project, is to engage with geospatial data providers in obtaining and improving their organisation's data and ensuring that it is published so that it can be used efficiently by the data community. He first began using GIS during his Masters in Applied Ecology and Conservation which led to several roles in the UK government civil service. He came to Scotland with 12 years of experience working on geospatial initiatives such as: animal disease and socio-economic analytics, the EU INSPIRE Directive, open and linked/ linkable data projects, GIS training and departmental geography strategies.

Vida Williams

Vida is a Technical Director of Geospatial and team lead at the solutions provider and engineering consultancy Jacobs. With a background in Geography and GIS she has worked in this sector for over 15 years, initially as a Transport Planner before specialising in GIS and going on to work not only on strategic and operational infrastructure schemes but also on innovation, digital solutions development and leadership and engagement strategies. She has a master's degree to distinction level in GIS from the University of London, a first degree in Geography from the University of Cambridge, is a second stage assessor for the Royal Geographic Society (RGS) Chartered Geographer scheme and an active STEAM Mentor. Vida is keen to look at GIS innovation in the engineering and infrastructure space, and to drive initiatives that harness and grow skills across our industry whilst improving equity and diversity.
