Damien Batt

Damien Batt is a right sided defender from north London, who opted for Norwich even though his signature was sought by London clubs. Sammy Morgan stated that Batt" is evolving into a right-back although he could still play at centre-half. He has a good touch, he's quick, he's a good athlete and again he has been with us a long time and made a lot of sacrifices to travel back and forth from an early age." He scored Norwich's first goal in the 2-1 FA Youth Cup victory over last season's champions Aston Villa on 2nd December 2002. He accompanied the first team during the 2003 pre-season tour to Holland and prior to the signing of Marc Edworthy, was acting as second choice right back behind Keith Briggs. Academy Director Sammy Morgan said in the summer of 2003 that "Damian is an exciting right back and is very good at going forward. My advice to him has been to tighten up his game defensively. If he can get that consistency of performance like Adam Drury, his extra talents going forward will stand him in good stead. But first and foremost he has to get that consistency as a defender." At the end of January 2004, Norwich announced that Damian, along with Greg Crane and David Chick, would not be offered professional terms by the Canaries. Damian trained with Wycombe during the second week of February 2004, and played all of their reserve team clash with Oxford - his form suggesting that Wycombe would take another look at him. He then played for Cheltenham's reserves, also against Oxford, and won 5-1 - leading to a repeat trial the following week. He returned to Wycombe playing in their reserves on 9th March against Southampton, who fielded Darren Kenton in their line-up. Southampton won 4-0. Damien also had a trial with Bournemouth but to no avail In the summer of 2004, Damien signed for Football Conference South side Redbridge. Redbridge's poor start to the season saw Damien released after the first two weeks. Rumour had it that Rushden & Diamonds offered him a short term contract but in fact he signed for Barnet on 27th September 2004, making his debut the following day in the 3-1 victory over Stevenage in the LDV Vans Trophy. Barnet won the Conference title in 2004/5 and returned to the Football League. On 10th May 2006, Barnet announced that they would not be retaining Damien for the following season. He signed for St Albans City at the end of August 2006. At the end of January 2007, Damian joined Stevenage. In September 2007, Damien was loaned to St Albans for three months. In February 2008, he was loaned to Woking On 5th August 2008, he signed for Conference South side Fisher Athletic who ironically had just sold his brother Shaun to Peterborough. He was one of three signings that Fisher made that day - the others being fellow midfielders Joe Howe and Chris Saunders. At the end of October 2008, Damien signed for Grays Athletic. He moved to Oxford United in January 2009 and helped them back into the Football League in May 2010 when Oxford beat York in the Conference Play-off Final.

  • Wisbech Manager

Dave Stringer

Job Titles:
  • Chris 's Former Manager
Chris's former manager Dave Stringer said that Sutton was up there with the best: "He was a big, quick, strong centre-forward and similar in some ways to Ron Davies. It's not an easy thing to score as many goals as he did. To get 25 in one Premiership season proved how good he was and the fact that he was wanted by so many clubs is a good barometer. He's had an excellent career, he's won things in England and Scotland and there is no one more pleased than me to see how well he's done"

David Beckham

Beckham's appearance for Real Madrid in the 4-1 Champions League victory over Steaua Bucharest on 17th October 2006 was his hundredth appearance in the Champions League, making him only the third player to reach that total - the others being teammates Raul and Roberto Carlos. Beckham was linked by the Sunday Mirror with a move to Tottenham on 12th October 2006 although The People claimed he was returning to Old Trafford. On 7th December 2006, it was reported by The Sun that Inter Milan were willing to offer Beckham complete control of his image rights in order to lure him to Italy. The following week saw Bolton manager Sam Allardyce allegedly saying that he hoped to lure Beckham to Bolton Beckham had a second loan spell at AC Milan from January 2010 and indeed played for AC against Manchester United in a Champions League match. He tore his Achilles tendon in a match against Chievo in March 2010 and missed the World Cup, returning to action with the LA Galaxy in September 2010

Gary Johnson

Job Titles:
  • Latvian National Coach
Paul Ashworth, from Buxton near Aylsham, began his football career as a trainee at Carrow Road. Failing to make the grade, he moved into coaching Norwich's youngsters alongside Kit Carson and Keith Webb and setting up his own PASS Soccer coaching company which provided a starting place for other coaches including Ricky Martin, David Batch and Dan Ashworth (Paul's brother) Paul later became Youth Development Officer at Cambridge United and Peterborough. At London Road, he progressed to the position of First Team Coach before he was dismissed by Barry Fry In January 2001, his links with then Latvian national coach Gary Johnson led to his appointment as manager of Latvian side FK Ventspils. After moving to FK Riga and marrying a Latvian wife, he was appointed Sporting Director for Russian side Rostov. When manager Gennadi Stepushkin temporarily stepped down as coach of Rostov because of illness, Ashworth became the first Englishman to manage a Russian league side when Rostov travelled a 1,800km round trip to play FC Rubin Kazan, gaining a 1-1 draw. Paul later joined Skonto Riga. In May 2008, he was linked with the vacant manager's position at Scottish Premier League side Hearts and is said to be on the wish-list of Hearts' controversial owner Vladimir Romanov. Ashworth said "Hearts are a fantastic club and I would be extremely interested in the job. "I've now worked between Russia and Latvia for the past eight years and perhaps the fact I speak Russian might interest Mr Romanov. I have not recieved any official approach from Hearts but it's something I would certainly have to consider, although I'm enjoying my time in Riga. I have a contract at Skonto but if Hearts wanted to speak with me I'd certainly listen." He was also interviewed for the manager's position at Kilmarnock In late 2010 and after five years with Skonto, Paul left Riga to take up the role of Technical Director at the Kwara Academy in Ilorin City, Nigeria. Further information can be found in this interview with the Les Rosbifs website In January 2015, Moved to Head Coach and Technical Director of Nigerian Premier League team Sunshine Stars. Based in Akure, Ondu state, and one of Nigeria's most famous club sides. Paul was again the first English Coach to work in this tough league, one of Africa's most competitive leagues. Paul left in June 2015 In September 2015, Paul returned to his first club as head coach after FK Ventspils lost 3 games in a row (and a 7 game non-winning streak) to take over as Head Coach/Manager for a second time. On 14 January 2019, FC Astana announced the appointment of Ashworth as their new executive director. They play in the Kazakhstan Premier League, the highest level of Kazakh football.

Glenn Roeder

Glenn Roeder is quoted on the Canaries' official site as saying: "We have been following Ryan at Oldham and we've been very impressed. We believe he can step up to the Championship and help us to pick up as many points as we can." "He comes to me highly recommended," said Roeder. "As always I make sure I do my homework. I asked a lot of people, including, although he might not have seen a lot of Ryan around the place, Joe Cole, who I am very close to at Chelsea. He said, 'Glenn everything I have seen or heard has been very positive that Ryan's got a big future in the game', and he did extremely well at Oldham. Mark Crossley, his goalkeeper at Oldham who Lee Clark is very close to, we quizzed him about Ryan and everything was good. Robert Fleck, who scouts for the club now, watched him at Southend and said he was probably the outstanding player on the pitch, and ready to step up to Championship level. Frank Arnesen (Chelsea sporting director) told me there were at least three other Championship clubs that wanted to take Ryan, but Frank was particularly keen because of the experience that Jimmy (Smith) had here to point Ryan in our direction. It is good news for the club that young players want to come and further their careers at Norwich City."

We'll be looking to put them in the right areas to cover the games and players that we want to see."

Keith Bertschin

Keith Bertschin was one of my favourite players when I first started supporting the Canaries. I remember his two goals in the 5-1 thrashing of Birmingham City on 8th September 1982. He joined Norwich City in August 1981 from Birmingham City having earlier begun his career at then non-league Barnet and Ipswich Town. In 138 appearances (including two as substitute), he netted 38 goals for the Canaries. A regular in the City forward line, he formed a powerful partnership with John Deehan. Joining Stoke City in 1984, he added another 88 appearances and 29 goals to his career record before moving North to Sunderland in March 1987. 36 appearances for the Wearside team generated only seven goals and a move to Walsall came just sixteen months later. He left the Saddlers for Chester City and then moved on to Aldershot Town in 1991. Aldershot's bankruptcy led to the termination of his contract and his professional career. Since then, he has spent time in non-league football with Solihull Borough and Evesham Town. In 1994, he joined League of Wales side Barry Town and hit the winning goal in the Welsh Cup semi-final against Bangor. In 1995, he moved to Worcester City and then on to Hednesford Town and Tamworth. 1996 saw him join his sixth amateur side Stafford Rangers. He announced his retirement in February 1998 to devote more time to his business interests. He signed off in fashion scoring the winner against Wisbech Town. Keith then became a licensed player's agent for First Touch Soccer Sports Agents. He returned to competitive football during the 2001/02 season, joining Steve Bruce, Mark Bowen and John Benson at Birmingham where he coaches their Reserve team When Bruce left Birmingham to take charge at Wigan Athletic, Bertschin followed and is their Reserve Team Manager. He again followed Bruce when he took charge at Sunderland in June 2009.

Mark Bowen

In February 2007, Bowen was linked with the managerial vacancy at Swansea City, following Kenny Jackett's departure, along with Jan Molby, Nigel Worthington, Joe Royle, Phil Parkinson, Kevin Blackwell and Dean Saunders. In October 2007, Bowen was linked with the vacant Norwich City manager's position following the departure of Peter Grant In June 2008, Bowen followed Blackburn manager Mark Hughes to Manchester City, joining the backroom team at Eastlands. Bowen left Man City in mid-December 2009 after Hughes was sacked and replaced by Roberto Mancini At the end of July 2010, Hughes and Bowen were appointed as the management team at Fulham, replacing Roy Hodgson who had joined Liverpool

Ken Brown has spent almost fifty years in professional football and never really got the acclaim he deserved. His 16 year spell at West Ham United coincided with the Hammers' most successful spell ever whilst at Norwich, he led the Canaries to Milk Cup glory and the Division Two title. Spotted as a schoolboy in his native Dagenham, he joined West Ham playing for the B team before turning professional at the age of 17. He made his debut aged 17 at Rotherham in 1952 when Dick Walker and Malcolm Allison were injured. After a spell in National Service, he returned to Upton Park and by 1957 was a regular in the first team. In his first full season, they won the Second Division title. Impressing in Division One, he received his only England cap in 1960 when Walter Winterbottom selected him for the clash against Northern Ireland (won 2-1). Ron Greenwood's appointment as Hammers boss in 1961 heralded the start of the glory days at West Ham with the side winning the FA Cup in 1964 and the European Cup-winners Cup the following year. Brown played alongside the likes of Bobby Moore and Johnny Byrne. In 1967, he made his 386th and final appearance for the Hammers when he followed his buddy John Bond to Torquay before joining Hereford of the Southern League where he ended his playing career. He teamed up with Bond again at Bournemouth in 1970 where Brown was Assistant Manager. Three years later, the duo moved to Norwich and had a successful seven year partnership with the Canaries in the top flight for all bar one of those years. In 1980, Bond left to manage Manchester City and Ken Brown was chosen as his replacement to manage the Canaries. His deputy was Mel Machin. In a seven year spell as Norwich boss, Brown won the 1985 Milk Cup final and the Second Division title the following year. His impact on Norwich's future can be seen by his signings (Martin O'Neill, Dave Watson, Steve Bruce, Chris Woods, Keith Bertschin, John Deehan, Mike Channon, Aage Hareide etc). Youth team graduates such as Robert Rosario, Jeremy Goss, Louie Donowa and Dale Gordon all made their debuts under Brown's stewardship, many of whom played in the 1983 FA Youth Cup winning side. In 1987, a disagreement with chairman Robert Chase and a poor start to the season saw Brown's departure from Carrow Road, to be replaced by Dave Stringer. Despite interest from Shrewsbury Town, Brown took a rest from football before joining Plymouth as manager in 1988. One of his signings there was son Kenny who had made his Norwich debut under his father's watchful eye. Fired by the Pilgrims in 1990 and losing his wife, he stepped away from football until Terry Venables appointed him as an England scout in 1994, a position which he still holds today alongside his investment in Lakenham Leisure Centre. He went to the World Cup in Japan/Korea to scout for Sven Goran Eriksson's England and lost almost a stone in weight in the Asian heat
