Alex Martin

Job Titles:
  • Alumni Relations Assistant
An alumnus of Ardingly College, Alex joined the team as Alumni Relations Assistant in April 2016. She has past experience in performance management and policy co-ordination at the British Transport Police, policy administration at Victim Support and mentoring work with Crime Concern. She works closely with Kate Goodwin helping run the day-to-day activities of the Marlburian Club and works term time only.

Antonia Packard - Chairman

Antonia left Marlborough in 2004 following 2 happy years in Summerfield, before embarking on 6 months of travelling around Latin America. Antonia then went to on to Edinburgh University where she left with a 1st class degree in Spanish. Having developed a keen interest in current affairs and human rights, Antonia worked as an investigative journalist after university before setting up a charity - The Sara Charlton Charitable Foundation, which helps victims of domestic abuse and honour based violence in the UK. Antonia's passions including dancing, travelling and food.

Chris Tanner

Job Titles:

Chris arrived at Marlborough in October 2013, joining the Development Team after spending 11 years in professional sport as Media & Communications Manager at Swindon Town Football Club. His role with Swindon included that of Press Officer, Programme Editor, Social Media Manager, Video Editor and Website Editor. He know manages all digital communication for the College, Marlburian Club and is also a tutor in C1. An innovative and experienced media professional, he is now responsible for our websites, Facebook, Twitter (@MarlboroughCol) and LinkedIn pages.

Christian Propper

Chris leads the operational team responsible for supporting our fundraising campaigns, events and communications. He also works closely with the Marlburian Club Committee on their priorities and goals.

Christopher Carpmael - Chairman

Chris served in the Royal Marines for 7 years post education. He was awarded the Sword of Honour as the most outstanding Officer in training, specialised in Mountain and Arctic Warfare and saw active service in Belfast and Iraq. He then spent 21 years working for Credit Suisse, predominantly within Cash Equities, both in New York and London. He ran Equity Research and then Cash Equities itself and spent his final 2 years at Credit Suisse as CFO for Europe, Middle East and Africa. He is now CFO and Partner of a start-up property development company, a Non-Executive Director of a Residential property company and is setting up a vineyard in Italy, where he has a home. Chris is a keen sportsman, food and wine lover, traveller and likes to be involved in charity work

Elizabeth Clough

Elizabeth came to Marlborough in the autumn of 1968 as one of the College's first fifteen girls. After Marlborough, she studied history at Somerville College, Oxford. She then joined the BBC as a news trainee and an extensive career in television news, documentaries and investigative journalism followed. She now works as a freelance executive producer in both documentaries and current affairs. She is also a non-executive board member of Wild Blue, an angel-investment group, and an advisor to charities including the African based Children's Radio Foundation and the more local Turville School Project. She is also about to join the Independent monitoring Board for Bullingdon Prison.

Eugenie York

Eugenie went to Marlborough from 2003-2008. She was in Mill Mead House and enjoyed her time greatly at Marlborough. Eugenie went on to Newcastle University to study English and History of Art. In the future she would like to be able to work in the Art world alongside her charities that are close to her heart.

Fiona Cottrill

Fiona manages and runs events for the Foundation and for The Marlburian Club. Since her arrival our Club events programme has expanded to encourage OMs, Parents and Friends back in to the College community. Fiona joined in March 2015 to run events for OMs, Parents and Development. Since her arrival our Club events programme has already expanded in the hope that many of you will be encouraged back to the College to meet your peers. Her background is in marketing and she worked previously for The Children's Society, where she ran events for the Legacies Team and was involved in producing creative content for fundraising campaigns.

Ian Leonard

Ian joined the Development Team in July 2012 and is now the Information and Communications Officer. He was previously a Government photographer with The British Museum, The Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England and latterly with English Heritage.

Ian Mackichan

Ian studied Business Studies at Oxford Polytechnic before going to Sandhurst and being commissioned into the Royal Scots (The Royal Regiment). He served in Northern Ireland, the Falklands and Germany. Ian left the Army in 1987 and joined the American Stockbroker, Prudential-Bache on the day of the crash, October 19th 1987. He joined Donaldson, Lufkin and Jenrette in 1990. In 1998, Ian joined Credit Suisse in London and is now Managing Director, International US Equity Sales at Cowen International.

Imran Tayabali

Patricia Morison (C1 1970-72) Patricia won a Scholarship to Somerville College, Oxford where she gained a First Class Degree in Modern History. She was a Resident Fellow of Wolfson College Oxford and is a Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford. She was a Journalist with The Daily Telegraph and was Art Critic for the Financial Times. She is now the Administrator of the Sainsbury Charitable Trusts.

Ivo Clifton

Ivo joined Rathbones after graduating from Edinburgh University in 1991 & has worked for the same company ever since. He is head of the Specialist & Charities team, and continues to manage charity & private client portfolios. Appointed to the executive committee in 2006 he has had a range of roles including deputy head of the London Office & chair of the Client Committee. Ivo has three sons and divides his time between a desk in London & Bristol - and a wife & farm in Herefordshire. He has spoken at several of the Sixth Form Careers' Conventions.

James Abell - Treasurer

James qualified as a Chartered Accountant with KPMG, and an interest in biotechnology led him to become the Chief Financial Officer of a small biotech company (long since swallowed by a larger competitor), and then to Abingworth Management Ltd which is a specialist investor in private and public life science and biotechnology based companies.

James Spender

James was sponsored by STMicro to study Information Systems Engineering at Imperial College London. On graduating James joined Andersen Consulting and worked with clients in Capital Markets Technology at Accenture and IT Advisory at Ernst & Young. He now acts as a freelance Enterprise Architect working with diverse clients including banks, retailers and energy companies on cloud and digital transformation. James is Co-Head of the Digital Enterprises Professional Group. James continues to shoot with OM Rifle Club, holds a PPL and runs marathons for the charity that his wife setup, Kipepeo Foundation, supporting deprived children in Kenya.

Jan Perrins

Jan (MInstF (Dip) joined Marlborough in 2010, and enjoys working with colleagues to build effective relationships between the College and the wider Old Marlburian community, past and current parents, and friends of Marlborough College. Jan was appointed Director of Development in August 2017 but has been part of the Marlborough Development Team since December 2010.

Jane Green

An OM herself, Jane joined the Development Team in August 2010 following a successful career in the world of educational publishing, where she worked in various marketing roles for over 20 years. Jane has a degree in English Literature and a great deal of experience producing marketing material for print and the web. Her connection with the College is life-long: her father (David, CR 1962-1995) taught History and was Master in Charge of Cricket for many years before becoming Director of the Summer School (1981-1993). She is herself an OM (B3 1982-1984), and has been a tutor in Summerfield House since 2001. She has two daughters, who are both at Marlborough.

Jon Copp

Jon joined Common Room in September 1981 having completed a BEd Hons in Physical Education at St Luke's College, Exeter. Following a two-year teaching exchange to Geelong College in Australia, he was appointed Director of Physical Education in 1988. Jon coached hockey at Marlborough College from 1981 through to 2013 with various stints as Master in Charge of both boys and girls. Alongside his teaching and following in the footsteps of his friend and mentor David Whitaker (CR 76-86), Jon pursued a successful hockey coaching career at club and international level. After short periods with Bath University and the Oxford Blues, he took up the coaching position at Reading HC and went on to lead Great Britain at two Olympics in 1996 in Atlanta and 2000 in Sydney. In 2001, Jon returned to the College taking a new role as Director of Summer School. Over the past decade he has successfully guided the event, now widely regarded as the market leader. More recently, Jon has assumed responsibility for wider commercial activity as Director of Enterprise, before stepping up to as Director of Development in January 2014. In August 2017, Jon stepped aside as Director of Development but continues to work in fundraising.

Karen Hill

After Marlborough, Karen studied Social Anthropology, Art & Archaeology with Hindi at the School of Oriental and African Studies. Here, Karen developed her interest in effective communication after winning a travel scholarship to research how NGOs communicate with the very varied, mass population of India. Following SOAS, Karen pursued her interest in communication into the world of business by studying for a masters in Industrial Relations and Personnel Management at the LSE, and has supported both multi-national and SME organisations in industries including financial services; IT and new media. In 2014 Karen established her own HR consultancy which supports the HR needs of start-ups and SMEs. Karen is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development. In her spare time, she is a chauffeur to her three county-squash playing children and does her best to squeeze in time for a good run.

Kate Goodwin

Kate joined the Development Office in September 2013 and became Alumni Relations Manager early in 2014. She liaises closely with the Marlburian Club President, Chairman, Committee and Development Office to grow the offer to Club Members, such as the introduction of MC Global Connect, an engaging program of both social and professional networking events and the mentoring program. Kate joined the Development team in September 2013 from St John's Academy, Marlborough where her role as Events Co-Ordinator included managing The Theatre on the Hill and development of St John's facilities as an artistic community resource. Previously PA to Lady Hollick and Administrator of The Hollick Family Charitable Trust, Kate worked in Publishing as Editorial Co-Ordinator at Transworld, part of the Random House Group, Assistant to Anthony Sheil at Sheil Land Literary Agency and to Ken McReddie at Ken McReddie Associates Theatrical Agency. Kate began her career as a Stage Manager and worked on wide variety of productions ranging from Panto at York Theatre Royal to 'Cats' at The New London Theatre in Drury Lane.

Kate Graham

Kate joined the Development Office in November 2021 from The Queen's College, Oxford. At Marlborough, she manages the communication programme for the Club and Foundation so if you'd like to share a story, or give your feedback about the Club Magazine, or the Donor Report, do get in touch.

Katie Beney

A yachtswoman of note and a Senior Corporate Manager at RNLI with considerable experience of events management. Katie was the organiser of her year's 25th Reunion and it will be excellent to have a member of the committee with first-hand experience of organising reunions.

Louise Pugh

Louise left Marlborough in 2004 after being Head of Millmead House and a School Prefect. After a year of travelling extensively through South America, Central America and the Far East, Louise went to Oxford to read Classics. After graduating in 2010 with a 2.1 BA (Hons) Louise co-founded the Sara Charlton Charitable Foundation which is dedicated to supporting women and children victims of domestic violence. Louise is currently working for Newton Investment Management and is in the process of studying for the CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst).

Miranda Wells

After Marlborough, Miranda went on to study Psychology at Manchester University followed by a career in marketing and events management with the Institute of Directors, CBI and NetJets Europe. After 10 years in Dubai, where amongst other things she ran the Marlburian Club activities in the Middle East, Miranda relocated to the UK in 2016. She is now active in charity work with The Grocer's City Livery Company and property management. Miranda is married to OM, William Wells (C2 1984-89) and she has two daughters, the eldest of whom has just started at Marlborough.

Mr Richard Fleck

Richard was in B3 under Percy Chapman and Jake Seamer, where he played most sports but excelled at Rackets. Richard has international honours in squash and sailing, studied Law at Southampton and went on to join Herbert Smith, where he enjoyed a hugely successful career. He retired in 2009 after 29 years as a partner but remains as a consultant. He founded the Auditing Practices Board. . Richard has also, somehow, found time to be a member of the College Council, a trustee of the Foundation and was Chairman of the 150th Anniversary Appeal, a trustee of the Club Charitable Funds and an active member of the Club committee, and now, a governor of Marlborough Malaysia.

Neil Moore

Neil Moore went to Merchiston Castle School in Edinburgh and UCL where he did a BSc in Pharmacology. He came to Marlborough College as a Biology & Chemistry teacher in 1996 after teaching at Pangbourne College for 7 years. He is a sports coach for rugby, golf and athletics and was Head of Athletics from 1997-2001. He was Head of General Studies from 1998-2001, Housemaster of C1 from 2001-2005 and Barton Hill from 2005-2016. He has been Contingent Commander CCF and President of Common Room since 2016 and is responsible for preparing pupils for applying to Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Medicine at university. His hobbies include Golf and Bagpiping. He is married to Lyndel who works as NHS manager at GWH, Swindon and has two daughters in Elmhurst (Hundred and LVI).

Olivia Timbs

Olivia was at Girton College, Cambridge and has spent most of her career as a medical journalist and editor, and has written for The Times, the Observer and the Independent. Most recently she edited The Pharmaceutical Journal - only the 12th editor since it was founded in 1841 (older than MC) and now she trains people in the professions and business who find writing a challenge. Olivia was the first former female pupil to join Marlborough College Council and served from 1989 to 2001. She became a Trustee of the MC funds in 2001 and has recently taken over the Chairmanship from John Manser

Paul Orchard-Lisle - President

Paul was one of the cohort that joined Summerfield in 1952 to bring its members for the first time up to those of a full-boarding house. After National Service with the Royal Regiment of Artillery and a degree in Estate Management from Cambridge, Paul spent 40 years with the surveying firm of Healy and Baker, becoming its senior partner in 1988. He retired from work in 2001 having been Chairman of Cushman and Wakefield Europe and Asia, and since then has held a numerous directorships. From 1988-91, Paul was the senior serving officer in the Territorial Army with the post of Brigadier United Kingdom Land Forces. For 12 years, he was a Governor of Harrow School and subsequently joined the Council of Marlborough College becoming Chairman in 2001. Paul is an Honorary Fellow of Trinity Hall Cambridge, and holds honorary doctorates from Reading University and City University. He was the Representative deputy Lieutenant for Westminster from 2007-2013.

Richard Pembroke

After reading Classical Studies at the University of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, Richard began his working life as a rugby journalist before co-founding one of the UK's first sports internet companies that was acquired by 365 Plc in March 2000.He subsequently became director of 365'sGlobal Internet Business before leading a management buy-out to become CEO of Rivals DigitalMedia Ltd, a digital publishing company with offices in London and Cape Town. Richard moved with his family to South Africa in 2003 and, in 2004, Rivals was acquired by UK Betting Plc. He stayed in Cape Town and, in 2004, co-founded IDM Holdings (Pty), an integrated financial technology company that now employs over 350 people. Despite returning to the UK in 2010, Richard remained chairman of IDM until June 2017.He now splits his time between overseeing a small but diverse collection of commercial interests, including a Tea Estate in Sri Lanka, and coaching hockey and cricket at the College, where his wife, Charlotte, is a housemistress. Richard and Charlie have four children, three of whom are currently at the College. Richard was a founder of the OMFutures Bursary scheme and is a Trustee of the Marlborough College Foundation.

Ruby Osland

Ruby joined the Development Office in November 2021 as Alumni and Personal Assistant. She works closely with the Foundation Director as well as in the Alumni Office by responding to enquiries, supporting the running of events and assisting the Alumni Engagement Manager with the Marlburian Club activities.

Simon Lerwill

Simon joined Marlborough College in January 2020 to lead the Foundation Office. His prime focus is to work with the College community to increase access for talented pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds through the funding of more bursaries. He joined Marlborough from the University of Birmingham, where he was the Director of Development and Alumni Relations - launching the largest ever fundraising and volunteering campaign in the Midlands.

Steven Bishop

Following Marlborough, Steven read PPE at University College, Oxford where he also won a Blue at Hockey. He has spent his entire career in the financial services industry, first as a broker with de Zoete & Bevan/BZW and then Altium Capital, and more recently in investment management as COO of Taube Hodson Stonex Partners. Steven is a member of Marlborough College Council, Chair of the Foundation Trustees and a member of the Campaign Committee. He was a Governor of Ardingly College until 2007 and also spent ten years as a trustee of the University College Old Members Trust. Steven is currently a Governor of Heathfield School, Ascot.

Tessa Packard

After attending Marlborough College and Edinburgh University, Tessa worked for the international art dealers Dickinson in London for four years, handling Impressionist, Modern and Brazilian works, before going solo. Whilst she remains an art consultant to her family and friends, her attention is now turned to the world of jewellery where she is forging a career as an independent designer. A fervent supporter of educational philanthropy, Tessa also sits on the Board of the Rank Fellowship, a grant-giving charitable trust that financially supports brilliant students in the UK.
