In 1939 an airfield was rapidly constructed on the eastern edge of the town for the purpose of training air crews to operate the famous Vickers-Armstrongs Wellington mid range bomber, which had a unique and innovative geodetic form of construction. Young service personnel from as far as Canada and New Zealand passed through 21 OTU before being stationed in far off places such as North Africa and Burma.
