Amol joined WWL as a consultant in 2014 as part of the team who provide the regional pelvic and acetabular fracture service. He also works at the North West Major Trauma centre in Preston to undertake general and specialist trauma surgery. His interest in trauma extends to reviewing trauma services nationally for NHS England. Amol has several publications, presentations and abstracts nationally and internationally, in well recognised journals, including review articles and book chapters.

He qualified from Cardiff Medical School in 2001 and after basic surgical training he obtained a place on the prestigious Orthopaedic Training Programme at the Robert Jones and Agnus Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital in Oswestry, Shropshire.

Martyn Porter

Qualifications: MB ChB, FRCS (Ed), FRCS Ed (Orth) Martyn Porter is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Centre for Hip Surgery at Wrightington Hospital in Lancashire. He qualified from the University of Manchester in 1979 and is a Fellow of the Royal College of the Surgeons of Edinburgh and received his Specialty Training Certificate in Orthopaedics in 1989. He has since developed his special interest in joint replacement surgery of the hip and knee and is particularly interested in treating young patients with arthritis and also treating patients who have problems after operations and dealing with revision surgery of the hip and knee. He uses a variety of fixation techniques, both cementless and cemented fixation depending on circumstances. He is interested in using different bearing combinations such as metal on cross link polyethylene, ceramic on ceramic and metal on metal and some newer combinations. He has also got extensive experience of hip resurfacing - over 400 cases and also more conservative methods of dealing with arthritis. He is Past President of the British Hip Society, present council member of the British Orthopaedic Association. He has an extensive interest in outcomes research and runs the Clinical Outcomes Research Group at Wrightington Hospital. In addition he has published many papers on the outcomes of various different types of joint replacement and techniques. He is a keen teacher and has lectured on many courses and conference, both in the United Kingdom and abroad.

Mr Sunil Panchani

Mr Sunil Panchani is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Lower Limb Surgeon at the world renowned Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust. He has specialist experience in complex primary and revision hip and knee joint replacements and pelvic and acetabular trauma. Mr Panchani graduated from the University of Liverpool in 2004 with an Honours degree in Medicine. He underwent basic surgical training in Merseyside and completed his higher surgical training within the North West of England. Mr Panchani completed his Master's degree in Orthopaedic Engineering at Cardiff University in 2010 where he gained valuable insight into the biomechanics of joint replacements. He gained his Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in 2013 and joined the Specialist Register in 2016. Mr Panchani underwent specialist fellowship training in pelvic and acetabular surgery at Wrightington Hospital. He was awarded the prestigious Cavendish Fellowship thereafter, based in Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, where he completed further training in the management of complex revision surgery for failed or infected joint replacements under the guidance of internationally renowned orthopaedic surgeons. He has visited many orthopaedic centres within the UK and Europe to enhance his experience in complex lower limb surgery. Mr Panchani joined the staff at Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust's orthopaedic department as a substantive consultant in May 2017. He also holds an Honorary contract for pelvic and acetabular trauma surgery at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Mr Panchani has a keen interest in research and has published multiple articles in peer reviewed journals and has also presented his work at international meetings. He has experience in setting up and completing clinical trials to further the knowledge base within orthopaedic surgery. He maintains a keen interest in teaching and developing the skills of UK and international junior doctors, as well as allied professional staff and students. He has been a faculty member in a number of orthopaedic courses which he has helped to organise. Mr Panchani maintains a medico-legal practice completing a number of reports annually and has completed an accredited Bond Solon course in this area of practice. Mr Panchani has gained a wealth of experience during his training and consultant career thus far and by providing patient focused care and using evidence-based medicine he strives to ensure optimal outcomes for his patients.

Mr. George Pavlou

Mr. George Pavlou qualified in 2001 and currently practices as a consultant with a specialist interest in adult reconstruction at WWL. He completed his specialist orthopaedic training at the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital followed by fellowship training at the Princess Elizabeth Knee Reconstruction unit in Exeter. In addition George was awarded the British Orthopaedic Association/EFORT travelling fellowship, where he visited centres in Marseille, Nice and the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. His clinical interests are that of joint replacement surgery of the knee and hip and revision surgery for infection and aseptic loosening. He has also developed a specialist interest in arthroscopic surgery of the knee. For those patients who are suitable Mr Pavlou looks to promote enhanced recovery for his joint replacement patients. George actively pursues an academic and research interest and has numerous peer review publications and presentations in both the British, European and American Orthopaedic literature. He is an active member of the British Orthopaedic Association, British Association for Surgery of the Knee and Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh.

Peter Kay

FRCS (England), FRCS (Glasgow) Peter Kay is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Wrightington Hospital, Clinical Professor University of Central Lancashire and Senior Lecturer/Reader in Orthopaedics, University of Manchester. He was Previously Consultant in Orthopaedics and Trauma at North Manchester General and Manchester Children's Hospitals (1992-1998). He trained on the North West training programme with fellowships in joint reconstruction and trauma in Stuttgart and joint replacement at Wrightington Hospital. He is a fellow and elected council member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He served as President of both the British Orthopaedic Association (2011) and President of the British Hip Society (2008). He worked on numerous Department of Health committees and currently is working with NICE to develop guidelines for the treatment of osteoarthritis nationally. His clinical interests are in hip and knee replacement surgery, revision joint replacement surgery for loosening and infection and knee arthroscopy. He runs one of the largest joint replacement practices in the UK. Prof. Kay has made over 800 publications and presentations as part of his interest in research into joint replacement, general orthopaedics and trauma. He has also published and presented on health service management, modernisation and the medico-legal aspects of the practice of trauma and orthopaedics. At the hospital, Peter has served as Clinical Director, Divisional Chairman and Associate Medical Director.

Rob is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon who specialises in arthroscopic (keyhole) knee surgery and soft tissue knee injuries. Rob was appointed as a Consultant at WWL after completing his orthopaedic training at the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital in Oswestry. Robert Smith is on the specialist register as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon. His surgical practice specialises in lower limb surgery, principally treating foot and ankle conditions with a particular focus on ankle arthritis and ankle replacement surgery. Mr Smith also treats knee and hip arthritis and performs arthroscopic knee and ankle surgery. Smith qualified from Manchester Medical School in 1994 and undertook junior doctor posts in the Greater Manchester area. He subsequently acquired a training post in trauma and orthopaedic surgery in the North West where he completed his general orthopaedic training taking a particular interest in surgery to the lower limb. In the latter part of his training time he worked in various fellowship posts focusing on lower limb joint replacement, and foot and ankle surgery. Through one of these fellowships, which involved working with Mr Wod at Wrightington Hospital, Mr Smith developed a particular interest in ankle replacement and ankle and hindfoot arthritis. In July 2006 Mr Smith was appointed as a locum consultant lower limb surgeon at Wrightington Hospital and subsequently a substantive consultant in trauma and orthopaedics at Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust. Research Interests: Mr Smith has performed research in the past on knee CT scans, trauma resuscitation, ankle fusion surgery and recently on the current situation in ankle replacement.

Simon Barton

Simon Barton is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic surgeon specialising in the treatment of disorders of the knee. His practice includes the management of sports injuries, anterior knee pain, patella instability and arthritis. He graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 2005 and completed his early surgical training in the South East of Scotland, Western Australia and Yorkshire. His higher orthopaedic training was on the North West Rotation, and he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2015. Simon's sub-speciality expertise in knee surgery was gained through two UK based knee fellowships, at the Wrightington Sports Knee Unit and The Avon Orthopaedic Centre, Bristol. Simon's time in Bristol was focused on developing the expertise to manage complex disorders of the patellofemoral joint (instability and anterior knee pain). He is one of a handful of fellowship trained surgeon's in the North of England able to offer the Bereiter trochleoplasty technique for the management of severe dysplasia. This condition, which results in recurrent dislocations of the patella, can only be effectively managed by deepening the groove at the end of the femur (trochlea). He offers a tertiary referral service for this and associated disorders of the patellofemoral joint at the Sports Knee Clinic, Wrightington. Simon delivers a modern, patient specific approach to soft tissue injuries of the knee and is passionate about joint preserving solutions for arthritis. He performs a full spectrum of knee surgery from biological joint reconstruction, osteotomy and partial knee arthroplasty. Simon has had a lifelong interest in sports and exercise, having played representative rugby into his 20s. In 2019 he was awarded a Masters in Sports and Exercise Medicine from Bath University for his research into the surgical management of patellar instability.
