Isabel Jamal is an extremely sought-after senior junior with significant experience. Her practice focuses particularly on large and technically complex patent cases and FRAND disputes. Isabel's practice also covers other areas of intellectual property law including trade marks, passing off, copyright and registered and unregistered design rights. Recent highlights include appearing as a lead advocate in the Court of Appeal for Optis against Apple in their "willingness" FRAND dispute, representing Abbott against Dexcom in a patent dispute relating to glucose monitoring devices and representing Unwired Planet and Conversant in the Supreme Court in their respective FRAND disputes.

Joshua joined Chambers as a tenant in 2022 following the successful completion of pupillage. Joshua specialises in all areas of intellectual property law including copyright, trade marks, patents, design rights, database rights and related contractual and jurisdictional issues.
Since commencing tenancy, Joshua has been instructed in trade mark infringement and passing off disputes in sectors relating to: horticultural products, caravans and mobile homes, alcoholic drinks, clothing, tote bags, charities, fast food restaurants, luxury restaurants, furniture, watches, gyms and activewear, car manufacturers, medical devices, vape pens, financial services, dietetic foods and substances, cleaning services, marine shipping, bakeries, taxi services and the provision of utilities. Joshua has also advised on and/or prepared applications for judgment in default in trade mark infringement proceedings.
Since commencing tenancy, Joshua has been instructed in relation to copyright infringement disputes concerning the travel sector and televised subscription-only broadcasts of sporting events, subscription services for access to video content, clothing, newspaper articles, academic articles, outdoor pottery, AI generative tools, wedding photographs, healthcare software, maritime training materials, clothing designs and hydrographic and geospatial data for maritime navigation.
Since commencing tenancy, Joshua has been instructed in relation to the infringement of both registered and unregistered design rights relating to homeware products and clothing, including industrial work wear and fast-fashion items, baby swimwear and shelving. Joshua has also been instructed in relation to invalidity proceedings brought against registered designs in the UKIPO.
Justin Turner's practice is concerned with all areas of intellectual property and other commercial disputes with a technical character. He has presented many of the leading patent disputes in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors. He has also presented cases relating to medical devices, computer software, financial derivatives, electrical engineering, wind turbines, telecoms, industrial process chemistry, ship building and the oil industry. He appears in the UK courts, the European Patent Office and has previously appeared in the Court of Justice of the EU. Justin has represented clients in international arbitration.
In addition to general IP matters, Justin has significant experience of damages inquiries, jurisdictional disputes, injunctions and anti-doping violations.
Justin was voted IP/IT Silk of the Year by Chambers and Partners in 2016. He has been described as "an outstanding advocate and a very clever scientist" with a "fantastic mix of strategic ability and a keen eye for detail" who has also been praised for his ability as a cross examiner (Chambers and Partners).
Justin has been in leading patent cases on insufficiency and plausibility including Regeneron v Kymab [2020] UKSC 22, Fibrogen v Akebia Therapeutics [2021] EWCA 1279, Sandoz v Bristol-Myers Squibb [2021] EWHC 112, and Neurim v Generics [2022] EWCA 699. He represented Genentech in relation to its patent to IL17 A/F and Gilead Sciences in its litigation with Idenix concerning sofosbuvir (Solvaldi) anti-HCV therapy. He has also represented Warner Lambert before the Court of Appeal in the leading case on the correct construction of second medical use patents. Justin has presented important cases concerning stays and interim injunctive relief including Novartis v Hospira [2013] EWCA Civ 583 and SmithKline Beecham v Apotex [2004] EWCA Civ 1703.
In addition to his advocacy, Justin sits as a Judge (Chair) of the Competition Appeal Tribunal where he hears, inter alia, disputes under the Competition Act 1988, including abuse of dominant position and cartel cases. A number of these cases relate to the telecoms sector.
Justin has a technical background with a PhD in immunology, having studied cellular immune responses to viral respiratory infections. He formerly sat on the Government's gene therapy advisory committee which had responsibilty for approving gene therapy and stem cell clinical trials in the UK. He has been a director of UKAD, the United Kingdom anti-doping agency, which carries out the testing of athletes and brings proceedings relating to WADA anti-doping violations. He currently sits on the governing council of University College London (UCL).

Martin started as a junior clerk straight from sixth form college in 1990 at South Square Chambers, the specialist insolvency set, and joined chambers in 1999. Martin manages the practices of the majority of our silks, although as with all our support team he is well informed of the practices of all barristers and will provide assistance where information barriers permit.

Michael Fysh was born in the USA where his early education was undertaken. His later education was undertaken in England. He is a British national. After a year at Grenoble University (France), he read Natural Sciences (Chemistry) at Oxford (BA 1962, MA 1969). He is fluent in French.
Michael Fysh was called to the Bar by the Inner Temple in 1963 and for some 25 years practised as a barrister in the field of Intellectual Property in England and Ireland. He was appointed QC in 1989, QC in Northern Ireland (1990), SC in Trinidad & Tobago (1990) and SC in Dublin in 1994 (where he was a subscribing member of the Bar Library for many years). Mr Fysh has also practised extensively in Commonwealth countries having been called to the Bar in New South Wales and admitted to practise as an advocate in both India and Pakistan. He has acted as an arbitrator and has lectured extensively for inter alia WIPO, Geneva, EPO, OHIM and the UK Foreign Office. He also participates from time to time in judicial training at the Indian Institute of Judicial Studies, Bhopal.
He was author of Russell-Clarke on Registered Designs (5th Edn.) and for over 20 years was editor of the specialist Reports of Patent Cases and Fleet Street Reports. He was author of The Spycatcher Cases (The European Law Centre 1989), The IP Citator (Sweet & Maxwell 1982 and continuing) and is Editor of Butterworth's Modern Law of Patents (2005 and 2010). He has contributed articles to both British and overseas legal journals.
Michael Fysh served on the International Relations Committee of the Bar Council for some years, visiting the then newly-emergent states of Eastern Europe on its behalf. He was a founder of BELLA, a group which furthers legal co-operation with the Baltic States.
He became head of the Intellectual Property chambers at 8 New Square, Lincoln's Inn in 1993 succeeding Thomas Blanco-White KC and Robin (later, Lord Justice) Jacob KC in that position.
Michael Fysh received an Honorary Doctorate in Laws from the University of Wolverhampton in 2007 in recognition of his work at the Patents County Court. He also became a fellow of the Institute of Intellectual Property Law at the University of Oxford in 2010. He is currently a visiting Professor at the Indian Institute of IP Law, New Delhi. In April 2012, he was elected an Honorary Member of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys in London.
Michael Fysh became an accredited CEDR mediator in 2011 and has also attended the WIPO mediation course in Geneva. In July 2011, he was appointed President of the UK Chapter of GEMME[2], the international association of judges and retired judges who are interested in promoting mediation as a means of dispute resolution. In April 2012, he was elected to the Board of GEMME. In 2018 he joined the Judicial Board of CEIPI at the University of Strasbourg.
In 2014, Michael Fysh was invited to join the team drafting the rules of operation of the Patent Mediation and Arbitration Centre under the Agreement for a Unified Patent Court [see Art 35]. This work continued for over a year and the final drafts were submitted in February 2016.

Philip joined chambers in July 2013 having previously co-managed a Private Investigation and Consultancy firm following his graduation from Bristol University with a degree in Law. Sienna Miller v Big Pictures and Darryn Lyons: Ms Miller claimed she was being harassed by the paparazzi and her rights of privacy infringed. She sought injunctive relief and damages. Big Pictures had sold some photographs to newspapers but contended that their actions were normal and reasonable in the context of celebrity news gathering.
