Andy Carr

Dr Fabienne Beuron is the Electron Microscopy Facility Manager in the ICR's Division of Structural Biology. Andy Carr is a Business Development Manager in the Institute of Cancer Research, London's Enterprise Unit. He helps develop relationships between researchers at the ICR and organisations and companies who may want to work with us, in order to build the ICR's commercial revenue and accelerate treatments getting to patients.

Anthony Clare

Anthony is a senior City lawyer with more than 30 years' experience, primarily focused on the biotechnology and life sciences sectors. He is a former Deputy Chair and Trustee of The Babraham Institute, a life sciences research organisation that is dedicated to making the fundamental discoveries that are needed to maintain health and improve wellbeing. He is also an independent theatre producer and Chair of Park Theatre in London.

Bastien Lecoeur

Bastien joined the ICR Board in March 2022 as its Student representative. He recently graduated from a Masters Degree in Advanced Computer Science from Imperial College London. He has also obtained a General Engineering degree from Télécom Paris. Interested in the application of computer science in other scientific areas, he began his PhD at the ICR through the Convergence Science Centre in 2021. His research aims at accelerating MRI acquisition for radiotherapy and especially on the MR-Linac from the Royal Marsden Hospital.

Charlie joined the ICR Board in October 2020. Charlie has been a career investment banker, most recently as a Managing Director of Lazard & Co, where he headed up the European Capital markets team. He has now moved to being a Senior Advisor to Lazard & Co as he completed an MPhil in Bioscience Enterprise at Cambridge. Charlie has a focus on funding for life science companies and has joined to Board to help support the ICR's philanthropic initiatives. He is also a Trustee of the Tennis and Rackets Association and is a keen golfer.

Chris Jones

Chris Jones is the Interim Head of Division for Molecular Pathology and heads the Glioma Team whose research aims to find the genes which drive the development of childhood brain tumours. He is Professor of Childhood Brain Tumour Biology, and Preclinical Chair of the international CONNECT consortium. Group: Glioma Professor Chris Jones and his team concentrate on scanning the genome and epigenome of paediatric brain tumours. Their aim is to find the genes that are driving development of these cancers, and identifying ways to translate these findings into new treatments for children with these tumours. Chris joined the ICR Board in February 2021 as its Academic Board representative. Chris studies the biological switches that cause cells to change shape, become cancerous and spread around the body. By understanding how these switches work, scientists may one day find a way to control them through drugs or other therapies. He is Leader of the Dynamical Cell Systems Team within the Division of Cancer Biology at the ICR. Chris has a 30-year international board and executive career in the life sciences. After 14 years at GSK he became Chief Operating Officer at MerLion Pharmaceuticals, an award-winning Singaporean anti-infectives biotech. Chris ran corporate development for the global informatics firm IDBS and was CEO of the executive search firm RSA Group before becoming the founding CEO of Medicines Discovery Catapult, the national centre for innovation in drug R&D. During the pandemic, Chris was founding Director of the Lighthouse Labs - the largest diagnostics project in UK history - and chaired the industry-governmental consortium on rapid testing that increased UK test manufacturing capacity by twenty-fold. Chris is chairman of Thriva, Exploristics and NorthWest EHealth and holds an honorary chair at the University of Manchester.

Clare Isacke - Chairman

Professor Clare Isacke aims to identify the processes by which tumour cells recruit non-cancerous cells during metastasis. She has held several senior positions at the ICR, including acting as Interim Head of the Division of Breast Cancer Research, and is currently Academic Dean. Group: Molecular Cell Biology

Daisy Henesy

Daisy is the Public Engagement Officer at The Institute of Cancer Research, working with researchers to communicate about our science far and wide. Margaret joined the Board in March 2023. She is a biomedical research scientist with interests in novel cancer mechanisms, as evidenced by deep biology, imaging and new approaches to drug discovery and cancer therapeutics. She is Professor of Cancer Research at the Cancer Research UK Edinburgh Centre and Director of the Institute of Genetics and Cancer at the University of Edinburgh. Margaret is very active in supporting the careers of early and mid-stage researchers, both clinical and non-clinical. She serves as Chair, or member, of several international scientific advisory boards. From 2002-2007, Margaret was Deputy Director of the CRUK Beatson Institute in Glasgow. She was awarded an OBE in the Queen's Honours List in 2018 for services to cancer research.

Dame Cally Palmer

Cally joined the ICR's Board of Trustees in June 1998 as The Royal Marsden's representative. She is Chief Executive of the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust and National Cancer Director for NHS England and has held this dual role since 2015. As National Cancer Director, Cally is responsible for the development and implementation of the national strategy for cancer to improve survival and quality of life for all those affected by cancer. Cally has an MSc in management with distinction from the London Business School and was awarded a CBE in 2006 and a DBE in 2020 for her contribution to cancer medicine.

Dr Becky Cook

Dr Becky Cook is Head of Research Support at The Institute of Cancer Research. She oversees our large strategic grant applications and is supporting the ICR's next submission to the Research Excellence Framework (REF), which is the definitive government evaluation of the quality and impact of research at UK universities.

Carolin is a senior executive with more than 20 years' global leadership experience within the pharma, biotech and consulting sectors and is currently a partner at Boston Consulting Group (BCG), where she advises biopharma clients. She was previously CEO of a UK biotech company. Carolin brings in-depth expertise in strategy, research and development, marketing and sales within haematology, oncology and immunology. She has helped to develop and commercialise transformative products for people with cancer and is passionate about translation of cancer research into improved clinical outcomes, enabling more patients to access novel therapies, and advancing female leaders through networking and mentoring.

Dr Fatemeh Ahmadi

Dr Fatemeh Ahmadi Moughari is a bioinformatician working in the ICR's Breast Cancer Research - Functional Genomics Team, led by Rachael Natrajan and Bioinformatics Team, led by Syed Haider. She joined the ICR last year, moving from her home country of Iran where she completed her PhD in anti-cancer drug response at Shahid Beheshti University.

Dr Federico Tidu

Dr Rachael Natrajan

Dr Rachael Natrajan is researching the ways in which different subgroups of breast cancer can be characterised through genetic analysis of the tumour. By improving this understanding, it is hoped that new treatments can be developed for specific breast cancer subtypes. Group: Functional Genomics Dr Rachael Natrajan heads the Functional Genomics team in the Breast Cancer Now Toby Robins Research Centre at the ICR. She obtained her PhD under the supervision of Dr Chris Jones at The Institute of Cancer Research in Sutton, where she studied the molecular pathology of the paediatric kidney cancer Wilms' Tumour. Dr Natrajan is a member of the Cancer Research UK Convergence Science Centre, which brings together leading researchers in engineering, physical sciences, life sciences and medicine to develop innovative ways to address challenges in cancer.

Janet Shipley

Biography Originally from Newcastle upon Tyne, Janet Shipley obtained a BSc (Hons) in Biology from Southampton University and a PhD from the University of London. Professor Janet Shipley is investigating ways to improve the treatment of patients with sarcomas that have a poor outcome. Group: Sarcoma Molecular Pathology 0000-0001-6748-8678 Professor Shipley moved to The Institute of Cancer Research, London, to establish a laboratory characterising genetic rearrangements in tumours and was awarded tenure in 1996 and a readership in 2003. Professor Kevin Harrington is Head of the Division of Radiotherapy and Imaging and studies the use of biologically targeted agents, in combination with treatments such as radiotherapy and chemotherapy, to target cancer cells selectively. He is a specialist in head and neck cancer and in melanoma, and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and the Royal College of Radiologists. Group: Magnetic Resonance Group: Targeted Therapy 0000-0002-6014-348X Biography Professor Kevin Harrington studied medicine at St Bartholomew's Hospital, London, and began focusing on head and neck cancer while a PhD student at Hammersmith Hospital. His PhD thesis was on the subject of liposomally-targeted radiosensitisers in head and neck cancer, including both pre-clinical and translational clinical studies. Professor Harrington specialises in developing new treatments using biologically-targeted agents (such as viruses, antibodies and small molecules) that selectively destroy cancer cells and activate anti-tumour immune responses. He is Professor of Biological Cancer Therapies at The Institute of Cancer Research and an honorary consultant oncologist at the Royal Marsden (RMH) and St George's Hospital. Professor Harrington is the national chair of the CRUK Advanced Radiotherapy Technologies Network Accelerator (ART-NET) and has held a CRUK programme grant for research in head and neck cancer since 2011. He is Director of the CRUK/Wellcome Clinical Research PhD studentship programme at ICR and co-chairs the Research Sub-Committee of the ICR/Imperial College CRUK Major Centre. Professor Harrington's laboratory research team focuses on a number of themes at the interface between biologically-targeted agents and standard-of-care therapies, such as radiotherapy and chemotherapy. In the clinic, he leads research in oncolytic virotherapies, targeted small molecule inhibitors, immune checkpoint inhibitors and small molecule activators of innate immune responses.
