Alexandra Armstrong (Alex) is the chairman and founder of Armstrong, Fleming & Moore, Inc. In her role as a principal of the firm, she provides comprehensive financial planning services to single women and couples, primarily retirees or those close to retirement. Alexandra is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ certificant and a Chartered Retirement Planning Counselor℠.
Alexandra has worked in the investment field for more than 40 years. In 1977, she was the first person to earn the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ certification in Washington, DC. Previously a senior vice president of a New York Stock Exchange firm, she founded her own financial planning firm and broker/dealer in 1983.
Alexandra coauthored a book for widows with psychologist Mary R. Donahue in 1993, titled On Your Own: A Widow's Passage to Emotional and Financial Well-Being, which is in its fifth edition. Both of them teamed up again in their most recent book, YOUR NEXT CHAPTER: A Woman's Guide To A Successful Retirement, to help women navigate successfully through another major life transition. She writes a monthly column on financial planning topics for the monthly magazine of the National Association of Investment Clubs.
A native Washingtonian, Alexandra has been active in the local community. A past president of the Boy Scouts of America, National Capital Area Council (its first and only female president), she continues to serve on its advisory board. She served on the national board of Reading Is Fundamental (past treasurer) for over 20 years. She is a past president and current member of the Women's Forum of Washington DC, which is part of an international organization of preeminent women in their respective fields. She is a member of the Cosmos Club (past chair investment committee).
Throughout her career, Alexandra has received several awards for her achievements. Among them, in 2004, she was the first woman to receive the P Kemp Fain, Jr., Award*, which is one of the highest recognitions bestowed on financial professionals annually by the Financial Planning Association. In 2006, she was inducted into the Washington DC Business Hall of Fame. In 2013, Alexandra received the Special Services Award from Commonwealth Financial Network for her volunteer activities. In 2014, she received the Invest in Others Charitable Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award for her national work with the Foundation for Financial Planning. In 2016, Alexandra was awarded the Women to Watch Lifetime Achievement Award** by InvestmentNews in New York City. As part of this award, a scholarship was created in her name.
Alexandra served for seven years on the national board of the International Association for Financial Planning (the precursor to the Financial Planning Association), retiring as chairman in 1987 after becoming the first woman to hold that position. She also served as chairman of the Foundation for Financial Planning (2000) and continues to serve on that board.
It is an honor to announce that AFM Founder Alexandra Armstrong, CFP®, has been awarded the first-ever Lifetime Achievement Award by the Foundation for Finanical Planning. The award is in recognition for Alex's integral role in building an endowment fund of over $20 million, which fuels FFP's grantmaking to nonprofit pro bono financial planning programs.

Jack joined Armstrong, Fleming, & Moore, Inc. as an intern in May 2022. Once he finished his degree, he came on as Client Service Associate in July 2023.
Jack graduated from Virginia Tech, where he majored in Financial Planning & Wealth Management. While at school, he enjoyed going to football games and hiking the beautiful mountains of southwest Virginia.
Jack was raised in Springfield, Virginia. He grew up playing hockey, swimming for the neighborhood swim team, and participating in Ukrainian boy scouts. One of his fondest memories is going to Game 4 of the 2018 Stanley Cup Final with his father, where he watched his beloved Capitals get one step closer to winning the Stanley Cup. Jack is a proud Washingtonian who loves meeting new people and learning from their life experiences.
Joan joined AFM in November 2007 as the front desk coordinator. Before coming to AFM, Joan spent 20 years with the Atlantic Media Company as a customer relations manager.
Joan, who is originally from Maryland's Eastern Shore, has lived in the DC area with her husband, Alphonso, for the past 38 years. In her spare time, she enjoys weekend trips to her hometown; charitable events and travel within the United States and abroad.
