What is ‘Alumina'? Alumina and corundum are commonly used names for aluminum oxide which is responsible for resistance of metallic aluminium to weathering and protects the metal from further oxidation. Alumina is most significantly used in the production of aluminium metal, and it catalyzes a variety of chemical reactions that are useful industrially. Alumina is especially known for its hardness and strength. It is widely used as an abrasive e.g. as a much less expensive substitute for industrial diamond. Many types of sandpaper use aluminium oxide crystals. Its polishing qualities are also behind its use in toothpaste. Furthermore, Alumina is used as a refractory material due to its high melting point. Corundum is the most common naturally occurring crystalline form of aluminium oxide. Much less-common rubies and sapphires are gem-quality forms of corundum, which owe their characteristic colors to trace impurities in the corundum structure.
