The new British Film Insitute occupies a space on the South Bank of the River Thames which has served as a centre of cultural activity in London for over half a century. Recent developments across the Southbank emphasise commerce as a means to support the cultural programme, but the new BFI brings a pause to this commercialisation of the river front by turning ther focus of the building, its entrance and public spaces away from the river front and onto Jubilee Gardens to the south.
