Caroline Tickner

With over twenty years' local and international auction experience, Caroline is a general valuer and auctioneer with specialist knowledge spanning jewellery, decorative arts and fine art. Caroline is a qualified gemmologist, diamond technician and a registered valuer with the National Council of Jewellery Valuers, and has been on the board of the Victorian Division of National Council of Jewellery Valuers for the past four years. Focussing on formal written valuations for market, insurance, probate, family division, superannuation, matrimonial and insolvency she assists institutions, lawyers, family law courts, insurance professionals, accountants, government bodies and private individuals to provide in-depth knowledge and advice to clients on a range of valuations. Caroline is particularly interested in the process, methodology and purpose of valuing and communicating to clients how and why we place value in a variety of contexts. As a general valuer, Caroline is focused on market trends and understanding changing prices and values across a broad number of classifications.

DANIEL MEHEGAN

Daniel conducted his first auction at the age of 18, having just completed his Cert IV in Agriculture, which was excellent grounding for his future vocation as a Stock and Station Agent and freelance Auctioneer.

David Jeffs

Having worked at a managerial level for over 20 years David has knowledge and expertise ranging from academic abilities through to analytical, forward thinking and innovative planning concepts. Specialising in earthmoving and civil equipment he has over 30 years working history from an operation and sellers standpoint to his current role as a valuer. David brings to the board a fresh approach and a West Australian perspective and his aim is to have the auction and valuation sectors regarded in the same light as the insolvency and banking sectors. It is his belief that, in particular, the valuation industry needs to improve the value it puts on its own work and ensure that the education levels and standards of valuers are up to a very high standard and fees are in line with that quality.

Geoffrey Eaton

Geoff has over twenty years of experience as an auctioneer and valuer, particularly in the areas of insolvency and recovery. A long-terrm director, Geoff has also served as National President of the AVAA and is committed to representation of the Association in matters of government policy an legislative changes. Geoff combines his educational training qualifications with a passion for improving professional standards through the development and provision of industry training and education.

Jane Raffan

Jane has twenty years experience working within the fine arts sector, in collection management at the Art Gallery of NSW, and as an art specialist and management executive for national and international auction houses. For the past ten years Jane has run her own art advisory and valuations consultancy. Jane brings to the AVAA broad knowledge, expertise and aptitudes developed in her professional career. Her accomplishments include balancing academic skills, creative insight and innovation with maturity of judgment, strong managerial qualities and excellent analytical capabilities. Jane is adaptable and works effectively in changing environments, while providing leadership, motivation and collegial support to ensure visions and long range goals are met. Her aim as a director of the AVAA is to advance the profile of the Association, the industry and its members at large, and in particular, those members working in the arts sector. Jane has considerable experience working within both national and international Fine Art auction houses.

John Leeson

John has been a valuer/auctioneer for approximately 30 years over which time he has obtained a great deal of knowledge, both professionally and personally. He has been a mentor to junior valuers and assists other valuers wherever possible. As a longstanding Director of a number of private companies, John has a sound understanding of the compliance requirements of Directorship/Board Membership and Risk Management, and is a keen supporter of continuing professional development. John brings to the AVAA enthusiasm and passion to assist its members and the profile of the industry, particularly through education and the continuation of professional development to create an environment which supports its members in all aspects, both professionally and on a personal level.

JOHN MATTHEWS

John is currently employed at Manheim Brisbane and he has been continuously employed in the motor vehicle auction industry in Brisbane since August, 1980.

JOHN SHERWOOD - CEO

John has had a long and successful career gained mainly within the telecommunications and information technology sectors in Australia and New Zealand. He has worked in both small enterprises and large public companies including Vodafone Australia and Spark New Zealand. For more than 20 years John has also operated his own business consulting practice, mentoring small business owners on sales and marketing strategy across a range of industries. John is a director of a franchised services business and is a Board member of a not for profit organisation, South West Community Transport. To the AVAA John brings 20 years of leadership in Chief Executive and General Management roles, strongly focused on sales and marketing to deliver business growth.

LIZZIE EDGE

Lizzie has over 20 years' experience providing executive administrative and educational support across many industries. Responsible for building strong relationships with members of the AVAA and providing guidance with the education courses the association has on offer. Lizzie takes pride in making each member feel "seen and heard" and goes out of her way to ensure all contact with the AVAA is a positive experience.

Peter Messer

Peter is a Director and co-owner of an Adelaide based Valuation and Auctioneering Company. Peter studied electronic engineering and was for many years involved with the audio industry. Peter's interest in electronics led to asset valuation and remarketing of plant and machinery with a focus on IT and technical assets. He subsequently acquired his interest in his company, leading a team of valuers and auctioneers for more than two decades including many significant projects.

Phillip Thomas

Phillip has many years experience working within the Fine Art and general auction industry, most recently as owner and principal of Raffan Kelaher & Thomas auctioneers. As a long-standing member and director of the AVAA, Phillip brings a wealth of industry knowledge and commitment to maintaining high standards and ethical behaviour within the industry.

Stephen Lester

Stephen Lester joined Cox Automotive as Chief Executive Officer for Australia and New Zealand in November 2022 and became a member of the AVAA Board of Directors in 2023. A credible and proven leader, Stephen has extensive international automotive experience gained in Canada, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. His sound understanding of the automotive ecosystems is derived from over 20 years with OEMs BMW, Nissan, and Stellantis.​ Stephen compliments this exposure with a comprehensive business understanding having held a wide variety of roles in marketing, advertising, sales operations, regional management, marketing and Managing Director.​ Passionate about transforming the automotive industry with tailored, digitally enabled experiences, Stephen is adept at working closely with customers to genuinely understand their challenges and develop sustainable, profitable solutions.​ Stephen Lester joined Cox Automotive as Chief Executive Officer for Australia and New Zealand in November 2022 and became a member of the AVAA Board of Directors in November 2023.

Tim Slattery

Tim is a director and co-owner of Slattery Asset Advisory and Slattery Auctions Australia operating nationally with offices located in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Newcastle and Perth. Tim has worked in the auction and valuations industry for the past 8 years however he has had exposure to auctions and valuations for more than 2 decades through the family business. Tim joined the Slattery team after spending a number of years working as a solicitor for the law firm Freehills in their Sydney equity capital markets, finance and energy and resources teams. Tim has also previously worked, among other roles, for Time Warner in Hong Kong and as an adviser to an Australian Senator. In addition to his experience in running auctions and the management of an industrial auction house, Tim brings to the board legal and corporate governance expertise having previously held directorships with a range of not for profit organisations.
