Biosafety is the term used to describe the containment principles, technologies and practices that are implemented to prevent unintentional exposure to pathogens and toxins, or their accidental release in the environment. In response to global concern about emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases especially because of the increased national and international transfer of infectious microorganisms and growing concerns about bioterrorism, considerable interest has been generated world-over on the biosafety and biosecurity issues. In India, research work on the various infectious agents has been a regular activity since time immemorial and the realization of the threat from these organisms in spreading to a greater population was always there.
