Dr Taro Okamoto

Dr Taro Okamoto is an Orthopaedic surgeon sub-specialising in the upper limb from shoulder to hand. Taro treats pain and loss of function related to injury or wearing and overuse in the adult, paediatric and athlete population. Taro was born in Melbourne and moved to Perth at the age of 9. He graduated from medical school at the University of Western Australia and completed his surgical training in Western Australia with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and the Australian Orthopaedic Association. After completion of his general orthopaedic training, Taro sought subspecialist training overseas. He had the opportunity to learn from and work with world leaders around the globe. This included several upper limb specialist centres in Japan, specialists in shoulder surgery in Switzerland, and he completed a hand and elbow Fellowship with the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. His work overseas focused on novel techniques including joint replacement and reconstructive techniques, arthroscopic (key-hole) surgery, nerve surgery, and microsurgery. Taro's goal is to tailor his treatment to the specific needs and hopes of every individual. Together with the patient, the focus will be on finding the best option for each person's unique circumstances, aiming for a return to pain free function. He utilises advanced surgical techniques and works closely with physiotherapy and occupational hand therapists to help patients restore their previous function, whether that be sporting, work, or activities of daily living. Taro has a strong interest in volunteer surgery and outreach projects in low resource settings. He has completed surgical missions in Madagascar, Honduras and Guatemala, and would love to share stories of these experiences when there is a chance! Taro loves the ocean and the bush. He is a keen four-wheel driver, camper, fisherman and freediver and has enjoyed these hobbies during regional work in Broome, Derby, Bunbury, Busselton and Albany. He has lived in 5 different countries and travelled to over 60 countries. He can speak fluent English, Japanese, German, Swiss German, and basic French and Spanish. Dr Toby Leys

Job Titles:
  • Specialist Knee Surgeon
Toby was born in Perth, and educated at Christ Church Grammar School in Claremont, graduating from high school in 1991. He studied Medicine at the University of Western Australia, graduating in 1997, and commenced residency at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in 1998. He went on to complete Basic Surgical Training, and then Advanced Surgical Training in Orthopaedics in Western Australia, and gained Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgery, and Fellowship of the Australian Orthopaedic Association in 2008.

Dr Xiang Salim

Job Titles:
  • Orthopaedic Surgeon
Dr Xiang Salim is an Orthopaedic Surgeon who is passionate and dedicated to providing the best care for his patients. Xiang specialises in sports injuries about the knee and shoulder as well as complex and revision joint replacement surgery. Born in Perth, Xiang completed his medical training at the prestigious University of Western Australia. He was selected for Orthopaedic specialist training in 2017 with the Australian Orthopaedic Association and the Royal Australian College of Surgeons. After completing his Orthopaedic training he commenced work in the Arthroplasty Unit at Fremantle Hospital and the Orthopaedic Trauma Unit at Fiona Stanley Hospital where he gained further experience in arthroscopic and reconstructive surgical techniques. Internationally, Xiang has completed two post graduate subspecialty fellowships. He was awarded fellowship at the highly regarded UniSports Orthopaedic Clinic where Xiang had the opportunity to work with a number of internationally renowned surgeons and treat several elite level sports teams. Xiang also completed a fellowship in complex and revision joint replacement with Dr Kelly Vince, one of North America's most respected and illustrious joint replacement surgeons. Xiang has also sought further training with several international visitations throughout Australasia and North America including time at the prestigious Mayo Clinic. To contribute to the scientific and academic community, Xiang is involved in research in osteotomy and joint preservation surgery as well as robot-assisted joint replacement surgery. He is also a passionate teacher and is proudly involved with the training and mentoring of future Orthopaedic surgeons. In his time away from work, Xiang spends most of his time with his Wife and his two beautiful children. He enjoys surfing, playing golf and having barbecues with his friends and family.

Paul studied Medicine at the University of Western Australia and graduated with Honours in 2000. He undertook his residency at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Perth and was selected in 2006 for the Advanced Training Program in Orthopaedic Surgery in Western Australia. Upon successfully completing his training he became a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and the Australian Orthopaedic Association, and in 2010 commenced his practice as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital.

Subspecialty Training

Paul has subspecialised in Shoulder and Knee Surgery. In 2010 and 2011 he underwent further training in Europe. He was awarded fellowships at an international training center being the first surgeon from Australia to be selected for Knee and Shoulder Fellowships at the Sports Surgery Clinic in Dublin, Ireland which he completed under Mr Ray Moran and Mr Hannan Mullett. He treated elite level athletes including players from the Irish Rugby Team, Gaelic footballers and hurlers. In this period he also completed observerships in Belgium and France.
