With 15 years' experience in underground coal mining gained from a diverse range of senior operational, management and project roles, Alaster's experience has embedded a thorough understanding and practical application of Workplace Health & Safety (WHS) legislation, Mines Safety Management Systems and compliance requirements. Alaster has also assisted international customers in establishing Emergency Management Systems in the metalliferous sector. Alaster currently chairs the Mines Rescue Working Group, a forum comprising representatives from across the NSW coal industry to achieve best practise emergency response. Alaster is a member of the Mine Managers Association of Australia and he has been a mines rescue brigade member for 12 years. Dave McLean

Areas of Expertise Safety Management Systems Dave McLean is a renowned industry leader, with 32 years' experience in managing businesses and leading people in the mining industry. Prior to joining Coal Services in 2021, Dave had been managing a number of underground coal mines across the southern, northern and western coalfields of NSW for 15 years. Dave is technically proficient in the fields of gas drainage, ventilation and spontaneous combustion management and has extensive knowledge of mine safety management systems and a thorough understanding of the NSW regulatory environment. Between 2015 and 2018 Dave worked for the NSW Resources Regulator; becoming the Chief Inspector of Mines NSW in 2016. This role provided the opportunity to see the other side of the industry's robust legislative framework that promotes mine safety and protects workers from harm. Today, Dave uses his experience and knowledge to work with and support mining operations' compliance with engineering standards and legislation as well as ensuring their safety management systems are effective. Dave is a member of the Mine Managers Association of Australia and is a former member of the NSW Minerals Council Executive Committee and the Mine and Petroleum Competency Board. His qualifications include Bachelor of Mining Engineering, NSW Ventilation Officer and Mine Manager Certificate of Competency and G3 Risk Management qualifications. David Moult

Dean Polly

Dean joined Coal Services in February 2018 as the Head of Prevention and was appointed to the role of Deputy General Manager, Insurance in November 2021. He became General Manager, Insurance in June 2023. As the Head of Prevention Dean led the design and implementation of the Account Management Framework which guides the way in which Coal Mines Insurance engages with both its external customers and internal stakeholders. Dean's workers compensation career spans more than 16 years, during which time he has held leadership roles at Employers Mutual Limited and Allianz Australia where he had accountabilities across underwriting and premium management, reinsurance, account management and distribution.

Graeme Osborne

Graeme Osborne was appointed as a Director of Coal Services on 6 June 2019. Graeme has a senior role as District President of the NSW South Western District of the Mining and Energy Union. He is a Graduate Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, having completed the Company Directors Course. Graeme has held and/or continues to hold directorships with various boards and committees including in private health insurance, financial services institutions and superannuation bodies. Graeme is an appointed member of the NSW Mine Safety Advisory Council (MSAC).

James Barben

James Barben was appointed as a Director of Coal Services on 1 August 2021. James has worked in the mining, power and consulting sectors in a variety of roles over more than 15 years. Since 2017 James has been the Director Policy with NSW Minerals Council. In this role he has responsibility for the policy areas of health and safety, mine rehabilitation, careers and skills and runs the Upper Hunter Mining Dialogue community engagement program. Prior to this James worked in the mining industry for more than ten years with Glencore, Yancoal and Centennial Coal. James holds a Bachelor of Environmental Science and Management; he is also a member of the University of NSW Education Trust Advisory Committee and the Building, Construction, Resources and Infrastructure Industry Training Advisory Body Industry Advisory Committee.

John van der Merwe

Linda was previously the CEO/Managing Director of StateCover Mutual Limited, and a non-executive Director of the Business Council of Cooperatives and Mutuals. Prior to this, Linda was the national workers compensation claims and underwriting manager across the privately underwritten jurisdictions for one of the world's largest general insurers. Linda holds a Master of Business Administration, is an Associate of the Australian and New Zealand Institute of Insurance and Finance and a Graduate Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
