Since 2009, Chris, a Member of the firm, has represented community associations as both board counsel and as litigation counsel. He has served and continues to serve as counsel to community associations in Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia. Chris prides himself on his ability to advise associations on complex legal issues. Chris is available to provide legal counsel to your community association. Jason E. Hickman

Jason has been practicing law since 1995. He focuses on the areas of business and real estate law. From real estate and business transactions, to business formations and governance, to real estate development, to business and real estate litigation, he has focused his practice in these areas in order to offer guidance to his clients as they maneuver through the process of running a business and owning and developing real estate. In his real estate practice, Jason assists both developers and individuals as they deal with the numerous issues surrounding ownership, development, purchase and sale of real estate. From assisting with the transactional documents, to advising clients about the development process, to assisting clients faced with complex planning and zoning issues, he utilizes his knowledge and experience, as well as that of the firm's real estate team, in order to resolve the issues and concerns of the clients. In the business practice, Jason works with clients as they establish their business, as they grow their business, as they encounter day-to-day issues and long-term planning, and as they plan their succession and sale of the business. He draws upon his history of dealing with businesses, from small to large, from corporation to limited liability company, from professional service industries to service industries, in order to advise clients about formation, from single member entities to large corporations, about structure and operations, from contractual issues (leases, employment contracts, non-competition agreements) to employment issues (protection against disclosure of trade secrets, non-disparagement, advising on hiring and termination), and about financial considerations, from asset purchase agreements to leases. Jason E. Hickman came to the firm in 2006 bringing vast experience in the areas of litigation, real estate, and business. Sherman Patrick Jr.

Sherman, a land use planner and the Director of Zoning & Entitlements at the firm, provides guidance and representation during the land use approval process and assists businesses, property owners and developers with obtaining approval of rezoning, special use permits, site plans, and other government permits. Past work has included Prince William County, Stafford County, Fairfax, Spotsylvania, the Cities of Manassas, Manassas Park, Fredericksburg, Warrenton, and Dumfries. Sherman has worked as a professional land use planner in Northern Virginia for 35 years. He has worked with Compton and Duling for over 10 years and worked for the City of Fairfax and Prince William County before beginning his development consultant practice. During his time in the Prince William County Planning Office he served as Chief of Plan Implementation, Chief of Current Planning, Planning Project Manager and Zoning Administrator. The responsibilities of these various positions involved him at all levels of many substantial land use development proposals and projects. This experience combined with the private sector representation of a diverse range of clients has also led to a thorough understanding of site development and political processes. He is involved with local government in an advisory capacity and is available to provide consulting to governmental agencies and expert witness testimony. Sherman has managed hundreds of land use cases through the government review processes. His experience includes direct involvement in projects such as: Potomac Mills Mall, Stonebridge at Potomac Town Center, Harbor Station (now Potomac Shores), Lake Manassas, and the INNOVATION @ Prince William planned business district. Sherman has substantial experience in managing rezoning, special use permits, site plans and subdivision plan review. In addition, he has extensive experience interpreting local ordinances, managing updates and amendments to the Zoning Ordinance, economic development projects. He provides unique and insightful perspectives into the land use entitlement process and focuses on providing the needed results. Sherman Patrick, Jr., a land-use planner, is Compton & Duling's Director of Zoning & Entitlements, representing clients in some of the region's most complex rezoning and land planning projects. Sherman's role as the former Zoning Administrator for Prince William County, his knowledge of Northern Virginia, where he grew up and has spent his entire life, and his relationships with staff, Planning Commissioners, and Supervisors have assisted in achieving wide-reaching success.
