Professor Simon Thibault is currently Director of the Department of Physics, Engineering Physics and Optics at Université Laval, and a researcher in optical design. He obtained his bachelor's degree in engineering physics in 1994, a master's degree in physics in 1995, and his doctorate in 1998 from Université Laval (Québec). Since then, he has been recognized as a Fellow of Optica (formerly OSA) (2021) and a Fellow of SPIE (2018). He is involved in several Optica and SPIE conferences, including chairing the IODC International Optical Design Conference in June 2023. In recent years, he has been associate editor of the following journals Optical Engineering and Optics Express.
Simon Thibault has held an NSERC Industrial Research Chair in Optical Design since 2008. With a budget of over $500K per year, the Chair focuses on the development of advanced optical systems and optical design techniques, as well as manufacturing and characterization methods, and is integrated with the Laboratoire de recherche en ingénierie optique (LRIO), which he has also headed since 2008. He is currently scientific manager for optical component manufacturing (diamond turning and polishing of optics).
Prof. Thibault is the author and co-author of more than 30 patents and more than 300 communication techniques in conferences and journals in optics.
