Part of the driver for this, it was told to me years ago, is that we love machines because they are dependable. The same can be said today about technology and automation. In fact, I was told once by a senior executive of a Fortune 100 company, we are not in any service businesses, because they depend on people, and people are unreliable. The problem really arises today, when the ROBOT (my catch phrase for every automated system from the automated phone answering system to a shopping cart on the internet to SAP at manufacturing system) breaks down, or more often cannot understand or refuses to understand a customer's position; in that case the customer is forced to interact with people.
