Derek Sullivan

Professor Derek Sullivan is Professor in Microbiology and the Director of Teaching and Learning in the School of Dental Science, Trinity College Dublin and the Dublin Dental University Hospital. Derek graduated with a degree in Natural Sciences from Trinity College Dublin and a PhD from the University of Newcastle. He joined the School and Hospital as a postdoctoral researcher in 1991 and his major research interest is the molecular analysis of how Candida yeast species cause disease in humans. Derek served as the Associate Dean of Research in Trinity College (2012-14) and has been Head of Division and Director of Research in the School and Hospital. He has served on the editorial boards of several journals and has published widely in the field of medical mycology. In 2011 Derek was a founder member and the first general secretary of the Irish Fungal Society.

Dr Aislinn Joy

Dr Aislinn Joy works full-time as Lecturer in Medical Education at the School of Medicine, UCC. Current roles include Lead for Inter-Professional Learning (IPL) within the Medical Education Unit (MEU), Co-Director of the MCh in Surgical Science and Year 2 coordinator for the Undergraduate Medicine Programme. Since 2014, Dr Joy has been actively involved in the approval of standards for, and, regulation of, healthcare professional education programmes on a national scale. Her main research interest in education lies in collaborative simulation-based learning, on which her doctoral dissertation with the School of Education UCC is based. She is a member of the Executive of the Irish Network of Healthcare Educators (INHED) and has served on the INHED Executive research sub-committee since 2015.

Dr Ronan Donelan has a background in pharmaceutical research and registration of new medicines. He has been an active member of multidisciplinary teams conducting clinical trials and delivering approval of new medicines across various therapeutic disease areas. He is presently Head of Global Regulatory Affairs for a global Healthcare company. He has previously held senior roles in Global Pharma and a US Clinical Research Organisation. His areas of professional interest include Corporate Governance, Risk Management and business growth strategies. He holds and MSc in Pharmaceutical Medicine from TCD and a PhD from Cardiff School of Pharmacy.

Dr Garvey was appointed as Senior Lecturer Consultant in Orthodontics in 1996. Thérèse graduated from the Dental School at Trinity College Dublin in 1982. She completed her Postgraduate training in 1992 in the Guys Hospital, London. Since 1998 she has been a Visiting Consultant at the National Maxillofacial Unit at St. James's Hospital. Thérèse was chair of the Irish Committee for Specialist Training in Dentistry from 2006 - 2009. She was a member of the Dental Council from 2006 - 2010 during which time she was Chairman of the Examinations Board and Auxiliary Dental Workers Committee and served on the Education and Training Committee. She is currently the postgraduate programme director in Orthodontics. Dr Garvey is in attendance at the Board.

David was appointed as Chief Executive Officer in June 2017 following his appointment as Interim Chief Executive Officer in August 2016. He holds a Masters in Accounting from the Michael Smurfit Business School as well as a Bachelor of Business and Legal Studies from UCD. David is also a member of Chartered Accountants Ireland. Orla Sheils

Professor Sheils because Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences in 2019. Professor Sheils has a PhD in Molecular Pathology from Trinity College Dublin and a MA in Medical Law and Ethics from Kings College London. She is a leader in multidisciplinary molecular pathology, who has championed a niche area facilitating interaction between basic science, translational research, clinical service provision and biotechnology. She has a particular interest in developing novel molecular diagnostics, and she works closely with industry bringing novel technologies and applications to the translational research setting. Her research strategy is to improve human health and wellbeing through translational research, and is predicated on clinical, patient centred, laboratory-based and health service research informed by real world clinical bedside problems, and societal and global health challenges. She is a member of the Tallaght/St James' Joint Research Ethics Committee and was Chair of TCD's Research Ethics Policy Committee (REPC) from 2012-2019 having chaired the Faculty of Health Sciences Research Ethics Committee (REC) for the previous 7 years. In 2016 Professor Sheils was appointed founding Director of the Trinity Translational Medicine Institute - an exclusively health sciences- focused educational and research institution, embedded within the acute hospital setting. She is an active Principal Investigator within TTMI. Professor Orla Sheils is a Key Opinion Leader in the area of Molecular Diagnostics. Her expertise emanates from a base of clinical, patient centred, laboratory-based and health service research informed by real world clinical beside problems, and societal and global health challenges. She is a recognised expert in Bio-Medical Ethics particularly with regard to biotechnology.

Prof Brian O'Connell

Professor Brian O'Connell is Dean of Dental Science. Brian received his undergraduate degree in dentistry at the National University of Ireland, Cork and postgraduate training in Prosthodontics and Biochemistry at the Eastman Dental Center-University of Rochester, New York. He continued his work at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, where he was Chief of the Gene Regulation and Expression Unit, NIDCR. Brian is currently Dean of Dental Science and Professor of Restorative Dentistry and Director of Postgraduate Prosthodontics at Trinity College, Dublin, with a clinical emphasis on multidisciplinary care. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics and a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.Professor O'Connell is a member of the Trinity College Center for Ageing, EngAGE, with an interest in the oral health of older people. He has published and lectured widely on Prosthodontics and Implantology. Professor O'Connell is in attendance at the Board.
