David Christian Samuelson

David Christian Samuelson was born in Fairbanks, Alaska on June 28,1966 to Ruth and Moses Samuelson. He lived his entire 57 years in Fairbanks but traveled to different parts of Alaska to hunt and fish. He was a son, brother, uncle and friend to many. His quirky sense of humor and love for family and friends was a huge part of his personality. He was happiest surrounded by family and friends, his face brimming with pride, often loving others above himself. He continuously made us laugh with his many off-the wall sayings that will always be remembered with laughter. David graduated from Lathrop High School and worked as a welder's helper for many years on the North Slope. Despite medical issues, David continued to fish, hunt and be a true Alaskan. The outdoors and his love for his nephew and nieces were a huge part of his life. His pride and smile were infectious and will always remain embedded in our hearts. David spent his life in Fairbanks with his parents, brothers, sisters, nieces, nephew, great nephews and great-nieces. He spent numerous hours creating adventures with his nephew, Aaron Gallagher, nieces, Ashley Holloway and Heather Richardson. Dave taught them how to fish at a young age and his love for fishing will forever be instilled. He was a huge part of their lives as they were in his. He referred to himself as the "the best uncle", they would agree. Often times when family went to brunch, dinner or to various gatherings, Moe and Dave would tap one another on the shoulder and point to one of the grandkids smiling and laughing. Whether the grandkids were misbehaving or simply being their cute selves, Dave was extremely proud and cherished every moment. David was a child himself, finding joy in the little things, that was one of the reasons he was loved so much. David would communicate daily with loved ones with a "good morning" text it meant so much. Every year, he would load up his boat and travel to his beloved hunting cabin to hunt moose. We would worry about him being in the wilderness by himself but he endured the cold and loneliness despite our concerns, always following his heart. He was "Uncle Dave" to all his nieces' and nephew's friends, and they too loved him deeply. David discovered social media recently and was able to reconnect with many friends before his death. We are all grateful that he was able to find joy communicating with them. He leaves behind his brothers-in-law, Jim Gallagher and Spencer Damschroder, lifelong friends, Eric Olson, Jeff Jackovich, Bob Hubbard, Eli James and Trish Tyler. We will forever have the memories of biking down to the river, fishing, going to the Farmer's Market on Wednesdays, floating down the Chena River and his endless hours cheering at the softball fields - he will always be our number one fan! David was preceded in death by his parents Moses and Ruth Samuelson, brothers Jerry and Paul Woods, sister Sue Samuelson and great niece, Jenny Gallagher. He is survived by his sister, Jeanne Woods, his nephew Aaron Gallagher, his children Peyton, Carson and Camryn. His nieces Ashley Holloway, her children Tryton and Kenley; Heather Richardson, husband Kane and their children Malen and Hadley. Uncle Dave may not be with us today, but our hearts are at ease knowing he is playing fetch with Tekla, eating meals with Grampy, hugging Granny, playing Rummy with Aunt Sue, catching up with his late niece Jenny and partying with his brothers. In the true spirIt of David's words "Party on Sister!"

Donald L. Evans

Donald (Donnie) Lee Evans, 69, was born on June 20, 1954, and passed on October 29, 2023, surrounded by family. His mother, Elizabeth Newman welcomed him home to heaven on the same day she went 13 years prior. Donnie was born to Thomas Evans and Elizabeth Newman of Rampart. He was born and raised in Rampart but was taken in and loved in so many different communities along the Yukon and Koyukuk Rivers, from Hughes to Beaver to Tanana to Minto and on. Growing up Donnie lived a subsistence lifestyle of hunting and fishing. He was an avid hunter and even in his last days as he was hospitalized, he talked about going out in the woods to hunt as soon as he got out. Even in his older age, he would climb to the tippy top of a tree to scout for moose. His heart problems were discovered while he was busy putting away moose, but it didn't phase him. Every village welcomed him with open arms, especially the children. He had a huge heart and love for babies and babies loved him. He was everyone's Papa Donnie. Everyone who knew Donnie knew him for his lovable but extremely mischief spirit. When he had his first grandbaby Makellis he said, "Welp, I guess I better grow up now." He was described as Rampart's traditional man and was happy to pass along the traditions he learned from Hughes to his Rampart fam. He was an operator in the Teamsters' Union for 40 years. After he retired, he still couldn't sit still, constantly working on something. He made use of his time by getting his grandson Makellis from school every day for an entire school year. He got him his McDonald's and brought him to his house every day instead of daycare. He spoiled all his babies rotten. Donnie was survived by his daughter, Marina (Francis) Sweetsir; grandchildren Mason, Makellis, Malachi, and Marrik Sweetsir, Leela, Freya, Carter and Eve; significant other Nancy Ambrose; mother-in-law Rita Koyukuk; siblings Ada Jordan, Ronnie Evans (Jennifer), Elaine Evans (Jim), David Evans (Gina), Boots (Denise) Newman, Doll (Milton) Moses, Sheila (Bill) Justice, Eileen (Dave) Whitmer, John (Kelly) Newman; special niece Cookie Monster Til Beetus; good friends Eddie Wiehl, Eddie Vent, and Ron Walker; favorite uncle Pete Evans; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends near and far. Thomas L. Popp

Thomas L. Popp, 63, died March 5, 2023, in Bellingham, Washington, of COPD and lung cancer. He was born in Juneau, Alaska, at St. Anne's to Charles and Irene (Roberts) Popp of Gustavus on Jan. 8, 1960. His early years were spent exploring FAA stations in Gustavus, Wake Island, Cold Bay and Glennallen. Tom was a bright and curious child. His grandfather, Sandy, gave him the name De Tr'ee Zhuu (Raven), the trickster. He had an infectious laugh, once bringing the house down in the one-room school in Gustavus reacting to a particularly funny scene in a play. Later, leaving the school, one old gentleman wiping the tears out of his eyes declared pure delight! That was the spirit Tom brought to our lives. During his high school years Tom participated in wrestling and played baseball in the summertime. He was a gifted athlete. After graduation he attended diesel mechanic school in Denver. He returned to Alaska and moved to Fairbanks, joining the National Guard. His young adult years were spent living in the fast lane. A couple of broken relationships, a couple of kids and lost opportunities, and Tom found himself in serious trouble. Tom disappeared for a while before turning himself in. After his release he began to rebuild his life, eventually marrying Donna and raising their two children, Greg and Amanda. In 1999 they moved to the Skagit Valley area where he worked for Les Schwab until health issues forced his retirement. He faced the diagnosis of COPD with grace and admitted he had lived a good life. He and Donna enjoyed nearly 36 years of loving companionship and the joy of grandchildren. Tom was a hardworking man who deeply loved his family and friends. He loved nothing more than telling stories and making people laugh. Tom will be forever missed by his family and friends. Tom is survived by wife Donna, son Greg, grandchildren Elias and Kashe, daughter Amanda, and grandchildren Zayden and Sonya; son Jared Popp, grandchildren Drew, Sydney and Elliott; mother Irene Roberts; Aunt Margaret Bessette; sister Jane (Jim) Bird); brother Frank (Kathe Rich); sister Debi Ely; brother Brian (Wendy) Popp, and many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins. Tom was proceeded in death by maternal grandparents Sandy and Lucy Roberts, Uncle Neil, and aunts Ruth, Bertha and Frances all from Circle.
