Opened in April of 1894 The Bank of Swanton was one of the few rural community banks in Nebraska that did not close during the Great Depression of the 1930s. While in Plymouth, the first bank was opened in 1893 and named The Bank of Plymouth. Due to the Great Depression, the State Banking Board wanted to consolidate and reduce the number of state banks, so in 1928, Farmers State Bank, a charter bank that started in 1912 merged with The Bank of Plymouth.
