CAPT Joseph L. Salyer

CAPT Salyer has served as the Training Coordinator for the Global Risk Management Alliance (GRMA) since it began. He is an expert in risk management, especially Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP), and editor of various HACCP related training manuals. He assisted in the preparation of the American Society for Quality Certified HACCP Auditor Exam. He has conducted training and made presentations throughout the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, Egypt, Ireland, Costa Rica, and China.

Captain Joseph L. Salyer

CAPT Joseph L. Salyer, REHS, MPH, is a Registered Environmental Health Specialist. His registration is through the NC State Board of Sanitarian Examiners. He began his career in public health in Chatham County and Wake County in NC as a REHS for two years. He spent most of his career with the U.S. Public Health Service in various roles and with several federal agencies. CAPT Salyer has 21 years of experience with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. He served as a Compliance Officer for fifteen years in the Foreign Enforcement Branch, Division of International Compliance Operations, and in the General Surgery Devices Branch, Division of Enforcement A, in the Center for Device and Radiological Health. He served for six years as a Field Investigator in the Baltimore District Office. While in the FDA, CAPT Salyer worked with foods, drugs, devices, as well as imports. He also had industry experience in food, drugs, and device manufacturing prior to entering public health. CAPT Salyer completed a five-year detail to the U.S. Coast Guard where he served as the Division Officer for Environmental Compliance in Elizabeth City, NC. He was assigned to the Indian Health Service for two years where he worked in environmental health and injury prevention on the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation, Rosebud, SD. CAPT Salyer served in the U.S. Army at the Medical Research Institute for Chemical Defense, Aberdeen Proving Grounds, MD. He has provided risk management training for the Department of Homeland Security, Transportation Security Administration, Freight Rail Industry Division. CAPT Salyer received his BS from Emory and Henry College, Emory, VA, and his MPH from The Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health, Baltimore, MD.

Dr. George J. Flick

Dr. George J. Flick is a University Distinguished Professor Emeritus of food science and technology at Virginia Tech. He has spent his entire career bringing academia, industry, and government together to advance FDA regulated products. He organized an on-line M.S. degree at Virginia Tech on the applications of risk science to the design, manufacture, and performance of medical devices, pharmaceuticals, and biologics. His research on food and food products were recognized on two occasions by the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Agriculture with the Secretary's Honor Award and the Group Honor Award. In addition to many awards received at Virginia Tech, including an introduction into the Hall of Fame by his college, Flick has been recognized as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a Fellow of the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT). He was also awarded the Myron Solberg Award from IFT, given to the person who has been instrumental in bringing academia, industry, and government together to solve food industry problems. He was recognized for his many contributions by the Department of the Army, U. S. Army Veterinary Command. Dr. Flick earned his bachelor's, M.S., and Ph.D. degrees from Louisiana State University. He has been a visiting Professor at the University of Tokyo, Tokyo, Japan with the Japan Society for the Advancement of Science and the National University of Mexico, Mexico City with the Organization of American States.
