Dr. David S. Newburg

Dr. David S. Newburg is one of the founding members of Glycosyn and the chairman of Glycosyn Scientific Advisory Board. He was awarded a BS in Chemistry by the University of Massachusetts (Amherst), and a PhD in Biochemistry with minors in Nutrition and neuroscience from Boston University. He previously served for over two decades on the faculty of Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, where he directed the Program in Glycobiology. Dr. Newburg was formerly a professor at Boston College and directed its Program in Glycobiology. The National Institutes of Health, Industry and Research Foundations have supported the research program directed by Dr. Newburg continuously since 1976. Dr. Newburg edited the book, Bioactive Components of Human Mile and is the author of more than 120 publications on carbohydrate biochemistry, glycan analysis, bioactive constituents of human milk, nutrition, human intestinal microbiota, and human milk components that protect infants and modulate the innate immunity system. He is active in scientific professional societies of chemistry, biochemistry and molecular biology, glycobiology, pediatrics, clinical nutrition, human milk and lactation, microbiology, nutritional sciences, and mucosal immunology, and has organized scientific meetings and symposia. He has been president of the Boston Glycobiology Discussion Group since it was founded in 1994, and is a founding board member and chair of the Research Advisory Board of the Mother's Milk Bank of New England, and active in the Human Milk Banking Association of North America. Dr. Newburg serves as a reviewer for many research grants and scientific manuscripts at the federal and international level, and is a regularly invited international speaker and recognized expert in human milk glycobiology and infant development.

Dr. Guillermo M. Ruiz-Palacios

Dr. Guillermo M. Ruiz-Palacios, MD (National University of Mexico; Residency in Internal Medicine, National Institute of Nutrition, Mexico City; Fellowship in Infectious Disease, University of Texas Medical School-Houston) is Professor of Internal Medicine and Chair of the Department of Infectious Diseases of the National Institute of Medical Sciences and Nutrition in Mexico City. His department has more than 100 faculty, staff, and trainees. Dr. Ruiz-Palacios serves on the Scientific Advisory Committee of Glycosyn LLC He is recognized internationally for his research on infectious diarrhea and strategies for prevention and treatment and as such has been a member of a number of steering committees and working groups of the World Health Organization. He has more than 100 publications on infectious disease, has served as the President of the Infectious Disease Society of Mexico. Dr. Ruiz-Palacios is a Fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America and member of the American Society of Microbiology, the New York Academy of Sciences, and the Campylobacter Society. His research is funded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health, the government of Mexico, and private industry.

Dr. John R. Garrett

Dr. John R. Garrett is Principal of John R. Garrett & Partners, specializing in building early stage companies. In the last four years, Dr. Garrett has founded, co-founded and/or served as CEO or Chairman of six companies. Currently, he is co-Ceo of Glycosyn LLC and Executive Chairman of Grid Solutions Corporation, and a member of the Advisory Board of Advanced Proteome Therapeutics. Previously, Dr. Garrett was Senior Advisory Director to the consulting, mergers and acquisitions firm Monitor/MAST primarily assisting early-stage software companies. Before that, Dr. Garrett spent several years as Director, Internet Business for the Cross Country Group company, focusing on its customer care and software initiatives. Prior to joining Cross Country, Dr. Garrett was co-founder and Vice President, Business Development for Planet Direct, a CMGI company, and worked extensively with CMGI's Internet and software initiatives. Prior to CMGI, Dr. Garrett worked with Drs. Robert Kahn and Vinton Cerf, co-inventors of the Internet. He also organized the first national conference on intellectual property in digital environments and served as co-chair of the first national Task Force on Digital Preservation. Dr. Garrett has published three books and many articles and chapters and has been a frequent speaker at professional conferences and forums.

Dr. Roberto Tapia-Conyer

Dr. Roberto Tapia-Conyer, M.D., M.P.H., M.Sc., Dr.Sc., a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of Glycosyn, is a Medical Doctor by the National University of Mexico (UNAM). He currently serves as General Director for the Carlos Slim Foundation AC. He has a Masters Degree in Science and Public Health by Harvard University, and Doctorate in Science by UNAM with honorable mention. He is also a Senior Professor and Tutor of Masters and Doctorate at the National University of Mexico and Visiting Professor at University of California San Francisco and member of the External Board of Directors of the Public Health Program at Irvine Campus. He is also author of the Public Health Manual which is official text in many medical schools in Latin America; Dr. Tapia is author of books in health topics like addictions and vaccines and author of several articles and chapters in specialized books, as well as in national and international medical journals. Dr. Tapia is an active Member in: the Mexican Academy of Medicine, the Mexican Academy Sciences, the Mexican Academy of Surgery and the Mexican Public Health Association, where he was elected President from 1997 to 1998. He is also Member of the National Researchers System-level III, coordinated by the Mexico's Council of Science and Technology. He worked in the Public sector for 25 years at the Ministry of Health where he reached decision making positions such as General Director of Epidemiology (equivalent to US-CDC) from 1991 to 1997, period in which he built the foundations of today's epidemiological surveillance system and the National Survey System. Dr. Tapia was appointed Vice-Minister of Prevention and Health Promotion for two presidential periods from 1997 to 2006. In 2007, Dr. Tapia was appointed Director-General of the Carlos Slim Health Institute where he served until 2012. He is active member of La Caixa Foundation in Barcelona, Spain and President of Patronato Nacional de Centros de IntegraciĆ³n Juvenil. His work experience is based on health topics related to innovative strategies in Public Health including vaccinology research, technological, operational and virtual learning platforms.

Gary Cohen is a founder and Co-Executive Director of Health Care Without Harm (www.noharm.org), the international campaign for environmentally responsible healthcare. Howard M. Newburg, CPA, (BBA in Busines Administration, University of Massachusetts-Amherst; MS in Taxation, Bentley College) is the co-CEO (President) and CFO (Treasurer) of Glycosyn and a member of the Glycosyn Business Advisory Board. He is the CEO and Managing Partner of Newburg & Company, LLP, which, since its founding in 1984, has been built into a full-service organization providing innovative accounting, auditing, tax and business management advisory services. Mr. Newburg specializes in financial planning, tax issues, litigation support, valuation, and consulting, and his diplomacy, discretion, and ability to communicate have earned Newburg & Company, LLP a loyal and appreciative clientele. Mr. Newburg is a Licensed Certified Public Accountant and a Certified Valuation Analyst .He is a member of the Boston Estate Planning Council, Massachusetts Society of Certified Public Accountants (Committee on Litigation Consulting, Committee on Business Valuation), American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, National Association of Certified Valuation Analysts, and American Society of Appraisers.

John H. Chu

John H. Chu is the managing partner of Chu, Ring & Hazel LLP, a 9 lawyer firm based in Boston, where he focuses on the representation of growing technology enterprises, as well as transactional matters on behalf of major corporations such as corporate partnerships and mergers and acquisitions. After graduating from the University of Chicago and Columbia University Law School, John began his legal career at a major Wall Street law firm in New York City. He subsequently joined Bingham McCutchen LLP in Boston, where he became a partner in its business area from 1988 until cofounding his current firm in 1995. Between the time of his legal experiences in New York City and later in Boston, John and his wife founded a mail order catalog business. John M. McCoy

John M. McCoy, PhD is Chief Scientific Officer of Glycosyn LLC John has over 25 years experience as a research scientist and senior research executive in the biotechnology/pharmaceutical industry, specifically as Senior Director of Molecular Biology and Gene Expression at Genetics Institute and Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, as Vice President of Discovery Biology at Biogen Idec, and as Chief Scientific Officer at RenaMed Biologics. John's broad background includes expertise in protein and general biochemistry, recombinant protein expression and cell culture in both microbial and mammalian systems, molecular biology and genomics, and disease biology in the areas of immunology/inflammation, oncology, neurodegeneration / neurorepair, fibrosis, and renal and placental disorders. John is author of over 60 research articles. He is also an inventor on 42 issued United States patents in the areas of recombinant gene expression technology, gene discovery technology, protein-protein interaction methods, novel genes, therapeutic proteins and modified therapeutic proteins.

Phillips Kuhl

Phillips Kuhl is the co-founder of CHI, and has been president of the company since the company began in 1992. Phillips has been responsible for the steady and profitable growth of the business to its current scope of organizing 100 conferences and tracks during the current fiscal year, all focused on biotechnology and pharmaceutical issues. During 2006 CHI acquired Bio-IT World, a leader in print and electronic publishing covering the implications of informatics and IT for better decision-making for biological and pharmaceutical research. At the beginning of 2007 the reports unit was re-integrated into CHI and rebranded as Insight Pharma Reports. Prior to CHI, Phillips spent three years developing the Life Science Division of conferences for IBC US. His prior experience also includes senior positions in consulting, market research and an operating position in a life science company, covering eleven years. Phillips received his BA in Economics and in Russian Studies from Haverford College and his MBA from Harvard Business School.

Steven A. Cohen

Steven A. Cohen (AB, magna cum laude, Cornell University; JD, Harvard Law School), a member of the Glycosyn legal team, is President of CEA Group, Inc., a provider of professional services in the areas of real estate development, investment, construction, architecture and property management. His former affiliations include the law firms of Fine & Ambrogne and Widett, Slater & Goldman, where he represented developers of major real estate projects with respect to site acquisition, financing, construction documentation, office leasing, zoning, governmental permits and environmental matters. Mr. Cohen is a Member of the Bar, Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts; Licensed Real Estate Broker, Commonwealth of Massachusetts; Member of the Cambridge Planning Board; and is on the Board of Directors of the New Center for Art and Culture.

Vidar J. Jorgensen

Vidar J. Jorgensen, a member of the Glycosyn Board of Directors, graduated from Harvard College in 1969 with honors in political science. Mr. Jorgensen is the majority owner of six industry based conference and research companies, which in turn own and manage over 200 conferences and several membership-based research groups focused on biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, health care, insurance, financial services, entertainment, and infrastructure development. Mr. Jorgensen's companies include CBI Research, Inc., WRG Research, Inc., Cambridge Healthtech Institute, Cambridge Healthtech Advisory and The World Health Care Congress, which was launched in conjunction with The Wall Street Journal and CNBC. This latter partnership will be expanding in both Europe and the United States. Jorgensen is also the President and member of the Board of Directors of Grameen America, a microfinance organization started in 2007 in Jackson Heights, NY. In addition to Grameen America, Jorgensen is a supporter of Grameen projects worldwide.
