With projects involving the railway, time is of the essence. For this pedestrian tunnel in Munster, Indiana, the contractor had just 96 hours to remove live train tracks, build the pedestrian tunnel using precast concrete panels, backfill and return the tracks to service. Our HFS crew was called in to fill the 2 foot gaps between the precast concrete base with PP5M, an IDOT approved mix. It hardens to 3000 psi in 3 to 4 hours, but has an initial set time of just 5 minutes with 100% accelerator. It's perfect for time-sensitive projects! Working with such a quick-setting concrete has its challenges. PP5M is usually poured directly off the truck into the form, but this site would not allow it.
