Corey J. Schmutz

Corey Schmutz is a native of Las Vegas. Upon graduating from Green Valley High School in Henderson, Nevada, Corey went on to graduate from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas with a Bachelor of Science in Finance. Following the completion of his undergraduate studies, Corey worked as a Credit Analyst for City National Bank on their commercial real estate lending team. After spending some time in commercial banking, Corey decided to pursue a career in Law. Corey earned his Juris Doctorate (J.D.) from the William S. Boyd School of Law at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. During law school, Corey had the privilege of completing two judicial externships. The first, for Magistrate Judge Robert J. Johnston in the Federal District Court, District of Nevada and the second, for Probate Commissioner Wesley Yamashita in the Eighth Judicial District Court of Clark County, Nevada. After earning his J.D., Corey attended the University of San Diego, School of Law, where he earned a Master of Law in Taxation (LL.M.). Corey was selected by Super Lawyers as a Rising Star, an honor given to only 2.5% of attorneys. He is a member of the Southern Nevada Estate Planning Council and the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA). Having lived in Buenos Aires, Argentina, for two years, Corey is fluent in Spanish. Corey is active in the community. Derek N. Hatch is an associate attorney at Jeffrey Burr. Derek focuses his practice on tax litigation and estate planning. Derek is a 2005 graduate of Brigham Young University - Hawaii. Derek earned his Juris Doctorate in 2008 from Chapman University School of Law, where he was awarded a Tax Law certificate acknowledging his focus and proficiency in that practice area. Derek continued at Chapman and obtained a Master of Laws degree in Taxation (LL.M.). During law school, Derek worked at the City of Henderson Attorney's Office, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Nevada and earned CALI Awards in Partnership Taxation, Real Estate Tax Planning and Executive Compensation. Kari L. Stephens is Of Counsel at JEFFREY BURR and the managing attorney of the firm's Las Vegas Office. Kari has been practicing probate and trust law in Las Vegas for nearly 20 years, and has previously practiced law in both Oregon and Washington. Kari is a native Oregonian. She completed her undergraduate studies at Oregon State University where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration (Magna Cum Laude). Kari went on to study law at Willamette University College of Law, in Salem, Oregon, earning her Juris Doctor (Cum Laude), having graduated fifth in her class. She then began her legal practice in Portland at one of Oregon's oldest and most respected firms, Samuels Yoelin Kantor, where she represented clients in all aspects of trusts and estates. Upon relocating to Las Vegas, Kari joined the Wells Fargo Bank Trust & Investments Center, where she managed the local Trust & Estate Settlement Services Department, overseeing the settlement of Trusts over which the Bank had been designated as Trustee. She later joined Goldsmith & Guymon, P.C., as an associate attorney, practicing in the areas of probate and trust administration, estate and tax planning and small business representation. In 2005, Kari joined the trust and estate litigation law firm of Solomon Dwiggins & Freer, Ltd., where she routinely represented fiduciaries, beneficiaries and heirs involving contested matters. Kari was named a partner at Solomon Dwiggins & Freer, Ltd. in 2008. Kari is actively involved in volunteering her time in the legal community.
