Chris Mara

Biography Chris joined Johnson Roberts Associates in late 2023. He has worked on residential, institutional & public housing projects, and has experience with the Ch. 149 bidding process. He graduated from Wentworth Institute of Technology with a Master of Architecture in 2015. Before joining JRA, Chris worked as a project manager at Next Phase Studios where he saw projects from schematic through construction administration, with a focus on schools and housing authorities. His enthusiasm for architecture began with an interest in civic spaces and the development of communities over time. He aims to create timeless and durable buildings using contemporary building science principles and construction methods.

Gibson Davis

Biography Gibson is an Architectural Designer who started off as a summer intern at Johnson Roberts Associates. He has contributed to the design of multiple firehouse renovations, the City of Boston Fire Department Design Guidelines, and ongoing work for MassDOT. He was the Design Shop Manager at Johnson Roberts and fabricated an extensive office buildout including new workstations, shelving, storage, and signage. He previously worked at Jaklitsch / Gardner Architects in NYC working on a wide range of projects including small scale public projects for the city of New York, cultural and community-based projects located on historical sites, as well as large scale developer work and proposals for projects in Boston, Philadelphia, and South Korea. He developed a passion for small scale architectural details through his experience as a residential carpenter where he worked across all parts of the construction process including demolition, framing, finish carpentry, millwork, and painting. He has a Master of Architecture from the University of Michigan, Taubman College where he worked as a CNC Operator in the Fabrication Lab, as well as a Teaching Assistant focusing on using hand drawing as a tool to experience and understand the 3D world. Prior to this, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the Catholic University of America, where he worked in the Fabrication Lab and was responsible for student use of the woodshop, laser cutters, 3D printers, and CNC machine. Gibson is excited to be working at a firm that prioritizes sustainable design in our changing world and understands the value of public spaces and resources. He takes great care that the human experience is always central to the design process.

J. Stewart Roberts

Biography As the founding principal of Johnson Roberts Associates, J. Stewart Roberts has had a leadership role in the design of libraries, town offices, public safety facilities and religious facilities since the firm's establishment in 1996. Mr. Roberts brings over 40 years of architectural experience in both the public and private sectors. As the son of a building contractor in the Midwest, Mr. Roberts grew up around construction sites and developed a love of making things and construction. He first came to Massachusetts to attend MIT in 1971. Thinking he would go into chemistry, he soon discovered that he was most interested in architecture and design. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Art and Design at MIT in 1975 and went on to earn his Master of Architecture from MIT in 1978. Mr. Roberts has been a proponent of sustainable design since the beginning of his career and continues to search out and implement the most effective green solutions possible for each project. His work focuses on design for communities. His municipal, library, religious and educational projects bring together a diverse cross-section of stakeholders to create facilities that have a long-term positive impact on the communities they serve. He has been involved in the design of over 100 public library facilities over the past 29 years. Mr. Roberts founded Library:NEXT, a library visioning roundtable, to examine the future role of libraries. Mr. Roberts is passionate about architectural history, and continuously studies architecture of the 19th and 20th centuries and lectures to various civic groups on the subject. He has been involved in the preservation and restoration of many culturally significant buildings throughout his career

Michael Bellefeuille

Michael Bellefeuille joined Johnson Roberts Associates in the spring of 2014. He is experienced in all phases of the design and construction process and has worked on projects ranging from public safety facilities and libraries, to schools and higher education facilities. He first became interested in buildings as a child visiting construction sites with his grandfather, who was a homebuilder. This lifelong appreciation for building has made him attentive to the details and connections that strengthen a design, and to meeting the needs of clients, communities, and the environment. As a LEED Green Associate, Michael is devoted to integrating sustainability and energy efficiency into each project and leads the office's AIA 2030 Commitment to move toward net zero design. He is proud of the fact that Johnson Roberts Associates is one of only 27 architecture firms nationwide that met the AIA 2030 Commitment's 2019 70% energy reduction goal. Michael is also experienced in historic preservation, and knowledgeable about universal design and accessibility. Prior to joining Johnson Roberts Associates, Michael worked primarily in residential design at Adolfo Perez Architect. He was twice awarded the Alfred T. Granger Fellowship by Plan New Hampshire, an interdisciplinary organization dedicated to fostering sustainable planning, design, and development. For several years he also managed LivableMHT, a website dedicated to promoting and envisioning stronger urban development patterns in his hometown of Manchester, New Hampshire. He has been a panelist at the New Hampshire Planners Association's Annual Conference and has been a frequent guest critic at architecture student reviews at Wentworth Institute of Technology.

Philip O'Brien

Biography Philip O'Brien brings passion to his projects for effective design, for the collaborative thought process, and for sensitive, achievable solutions. He has particular expertise in public library and municipal facilities design, as well as historic restoration and the adaptive reuse of historic structures. Since Mr. O'Brien joined Johnson Roberts Associates in 1997, he has held a leadership role in a wide variety of public and private projects. Mr. O'Brien came to architecture through an early interest in construction and a wish to make things. He has a history in carpentry and masonry construction and chose Wentworth Institute of Technology for its hands-on, technical approach to designing buildings. These experiences have made him a leader in technical and constructability issues in building design. Mr. O'Brien is a specifications writer and is experienced in programming, planning, and building fabric analysis. He is particularly knowledgeable of the requirements of Massachusetts General Law Chapter 149, governing public construction Massachusetts. Mr. O'Brien is also the author of The Project Handbook, an in-house published guide, that Johnson Roberts Associates uses to help clients navigate the processes of a building project, from design through to construction. He also keeps a blog about the books he is reading and his thoughts on the future of public libraries.

Rajeev Pandey

Biography Raj eev Pandey is an architectural designer originally from Kolkata, India, graduated with an NAAB accredited Bachelor of Architecture degree from Boston Architectural College in May 2020. In 2023 he received a Master of Landscape Architecture degree, also at Boston Architectural College. And, he's extremely interested in 3D modeling, visualization, and graphic representational techniques. In addition to academic pursuits, his professional goals include appearing for the ARE exams for AIA licensure within the coming year and gaining substantial experience in all phases of design, from concept to completion. Shortly after, he plans on appearing for the LARE exams which will make him a licensed landscape architect as well.

Robert McLaughlin

Biography Robert received a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst after having graduated in 2021. Alongside his major he also received a Certificate of Film Studies, and a Minor in Art History during his time in Amherst. His subjects of choice ranged from unitized design to food inaccessibility and destigmatization. Before joining JRA, Robert worked in carpentry and construction alongside contractors in the field, interior designers in the studio, and set designers behind the curtain. His interests include transit infrastructure and accessibility - he believes in creating open and accessible spaces that can serve others through design.

Ruth Wang

Biography Ruth joined Johnson Roberts Associates in the fall of 2023. She is an architectural designer pursuing licensure. Her experience is in commercial core and shell, workplace and hospitality interiors, and medical planning. Her project work spans locations on the east and west coasts of the U.S. and international developments. She is passionate about working with communities on projects that reflect the diverse needs and cultures of the people impacted on a micro and macro scale. As a LEED AP, she is mindful of sustainable materials, sustainable design and preserving resilient environments and communities. Ruth's strengths are in research, planning and architectural detailing. She is interested in integrated processes and continuity of teams, working together to create, develop and implement architectural designs from the concept phase, through documentation and on to construction administration. She is dedicated to implementing processes that help teams work efficiently through effective communication, collaborative tools and project standards. Before joining Johnson Roberts Associates, she worked at SmithGroup, ZGF, and NBBJ, as well as smaller offices such as Rockwell Group and Parc Office in New York City, Seattle and Boston. Through these experiences she has learned to adapt to many ways of working. Outside of work, Ruth enjoys studio arts, such as illustration, acrylic painting and printmaking. Ruth grew up in Michigan, where she spent a lot of time on lakes and in pools swimming for fun and for teams. Today, she finds any time she can to head to the pool or participate in open water swimming.

Stephenie Harper

Biography Stephenie Harper has been working in design and construction since 2005. She has worked on a broad range of public and private project types including: single family residential, office, manufacturing, campus planning, and academic, with a focus on lab design. Prior to attending Ohio State, she worked as a casework designer at New England Lab, giving her insight into the production and installation side of design. Before joining Johnson Roberts Associates, she has worked with Andrew Sidford Architects, Signer Harris (acquired by Perkins + Will), Payette, and Saam. Ms. Harper has a passion for solving complex programmatic problems. She is most engaged with projects with unique constraints, having worked on retrofits of historic buildings ranging from Romanesque to Brutalist. She enjoys coordinating work between consultants. Her first passion was visual arts. After studying architectural and art history in college, she volunteered as an installation designer in New York. She often takes courses to learn new skills, and has been part of a green artists collaborative in Newburyport, MA.
