Educated at Leiden University John obtained a BSc in Geology and an MSc in Geology and Geophysics. "I wasn't a terribly good student and spent more time chasing cars, girls and a good time"... The curriculum in Leiden, at that time ("the Sixties and early Seventies"), not only offered that leeway, but was also broad enough to acquire some knowledge of all the geological fields and specialize in some of them. "I would like to think, that I was pretty good in planning and executing field projects, such as mapping and geophysical surveys"... In those times "Field Work" was still a major issue. Many summers of up to three months were spend in the areas where our professors held an academic interest and research was carried out. "Obviously my interest was in Spain, I had been there on holidays with my parents and enjoyed the climate, the scenery and the people, although my Spanish was very poor indeed".
