Alex Hill

Alex joined MN in 2016 after graduating from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a Bachelor of Science degree in Actuarial Science. He has had great success with the actuarial exams, having passed six exams. At MN, he is gaining experience in many aspects of life insurance actuarial work including pricing, valuation, cash flow testing, and actuarial software conversions all while working towards his ASA designation with the SOA. During his free time, Alex enjoys playing golf, traveling, and spending time with his wife and two dogs.

Casey Kelley

Job Titles:
  • ACTUARIAL ANALYST
Casey joined MN at the close of 2018. He attained a degree in Actuarial Science from the University of Central Missouri where he doubled as a student-athlete on the Mule's baseball team. Other involvement at UCM includes membership in Statistics Club, Economics Club, and the mathematics honor society, Kappa Mu Epsilon. His experience in the actuarial field is expanding quickly as he assists with a variety of projects including pricing, x-factor testing, experience studies, competitive analysis, cash flow testing, and actuarial audits. Having passed four exams already, Casey is working towards his ASA designation with the SOA. He can likely be found playing disk golf, playing baseball, spending time at the gym, or relaxing with friends in his free time.

Chris Conklin - VP

Chris' 30+ years of actuarial experience include senior management roles at carriers of various sizes, including roles as head of a product line, head of sales, and head of product development for multiple product lines. Having also been an entrepreneur, the result is that Chris has an unusual blend of actuarial, sales, marketing, and operations experience in annuities, life insurance, long term care insurance, and retirement plans. That multi-disciplinary expertise allows him to seize market opportunities, envisioning and building products, services, and distribution to capture them. He is particularly well-versed in creating success for carriers in independent distribution, where a compelling value proposition is required. Besides his deep passion for our industry and all things related to business and finance in general, Chris is also committed to his wife and children, his Christian faith, and exploring our local golf courses.

Ed Cowman - Managing Director

Ed brings unsurpassed experience to our core practice area of Life Insurance and Annuities. His broad experience includes serving in managerial roles in both insurance companies and consulting firms. He currently serves as the Appointed Actuary and Illustration Actuary for several fraternal benefit societies. Ed earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics with distinction from the University of Iowa. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time at his family farm.

Eric Deis

Eric joined MN in 2020 and has 13+ years of experience in the life insurance and annuity industry. His areas of expertise include modeling and valuation, primarily GAAP valuation. Before his move to consulting, Eric spent over twelve years with an insurance company working to continuously improve all aspects of the GAAP valuation process. He is a graduate of the University of Central Missouri with a Bachelor of Science degree in Actuarial Science. During his free time, Eric enjoys working on home projects, running, playing sports, and spending time with his wife and four kids.

Eric Newberg - CEO, President

A consulting actuary for 30+ years, Eric applies his experience, creativity, and tenacity to help life and annuity clients across the insurance industry. His expertise includes product design and pricing, statutory and GAAP valuations, asset adequacy analysis, experience analysis, strategic planning, actuarial appraisals, and due diligence investigations. Clients range from rapidly growing start-ups to established multi-billion dollar enterprises. Currently serving as Appointed Actuary for 8 life insurance companies and fraternal benefit societies, he is responsible to boards of directors, management teams, and regulators, all the while striving to advocate the client's best interests. His leadership role centers on ensuring that MN has "command of what we do" by deploying individual qualities within the MN Team. His passion centers on faith fused with a positive attitude and profound energy.

Hogan Spencer

Hogan joined MN in 2021 after graduating from Olivet Nazarene University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Actuarial and Data Science. He has passed three actuarial exams, with more in his purview, as he heads toward his ASA designation. At MN, he is gaining actuarial experience within the life insurance and annuity sector, developing skills in pricing, valuation, and cash flow testing. When not at work, Hogan can be found spending time with family, playing tennis, or baking sourdough bread.

Kent Barchers - Managing Director

Kent has been working at insurance companies and actuarial consulting firms for over 17 years. His broad range of experience includes pricing, valuation, cash flow testing, actuarial appraisals, product development, 7702 premium calculations, and statutory statement preparation. Kent has worked with an array of insurance products, including life, annuity, disability, accident and health, unemployment, credit life, credit disability, credit property, and debt protection. He began his insurance career as a claims adjuster and has served in a variety of roles, including training, performance consulting, and auditing. In addition to being a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries, Kent is a Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter. When out of the office, Kent pursues his lifetime dream of becoming an average guitarist. He also enjoys baking chocolate pies, riding bikes with his wife, and taking care of his beloved dog. Kristen Carlson

Kristen heads the communications and marketing support for MN, as well as manages the office. She is accustomed to wearing many hats and has a wide range of experience. Prior to joining MN in 2001, she worked as a project manager for a national training company, manager for the introduction of instructor-led training events on the Internet, newsletter editor, account analyst, and youth pastor for her church. Kristen enjoys working with special needs children in her off hours.

Kyle Kurtz

Kyle holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from the University of Kansas. Before joining MN in 2013, his previous work experience included statistical analysis of drug safety and efficacy for a large pharmaceutical CRO. His experience at MN includes assisting in audits, product development, valuation, cash flow testing, and experience studies. Kyle's prior achievements include attaining Eagle Scout and a black belt in Tae Kwon Do. When he is not studying for the next actuarial exam or spending time with his wife and kids, he enjoys outdoor activities such as golf, disk golf, snowboarding, and paintball.

Lori Newberg - CFO, EVP

Lori's 35+ years of actuarial experience include the design and pricing of insurance products (traditional, universal life and indexed products), reinsurance solutions, valuation, asset adequacy analysis, corporate projections, modeling, and risk management. She serves clients in varied capacities such as Appointed Actuary, Illustration Actuary, and Product Development Actuary. Her clients include fraternal benefit societies, insurance companies, and audit firms. Lori is a Board of Director for Modern Woodmen of America. She has served on the Actuaries Section Advisory Council of the American Fraternal Alliance, Small Companies council member within the Society of Actuaries, as president of the Kansas City Actuaries Club, as president of a local women's golf association, and a presenter on a variety of topics. Her passions are faith, family, and fun.

Marshall Barney

Marshall has over 30 years of life insurance and annuity experience, including the assessment of reserve adequacy, company valuations, asset adequacy analysis, pricing and product development, x-factor testing, and feasibility testing of life insurance sales illustrations. Marshall's favorite activities revolve around his wife and four children, and coaching cross-country and track and field for homeschooled athletes in a University Model Christian school.

Nancy Wunderlich

Nancy Wunderlich has 17 years of life insurance experience and specializes in the integrity of the work product produced by MN. She peer reviews assumptions in models, uniformity in reporting, and training on the actuarial software used for many assignments. When her children were younger, Nancy volunteered in their elementary and middle schools setting up math clubs and organizing competitions. When she's not working, she enjoys spending time with her family and traveling.

Pam Clemons

Pam is in charge of archiving and maintaining the electronic files for MN. Upon graduating from KU she had a brief career in the insurance industry before leaving to stay home with her two sons. Pam continues to substitute teach preschool through high school which she has done for nearly 20 years. She especially enjoys doing this now that she and her husband of 32 years are empty nesters. Pam's hobbies include reading historical fiction, gardening, cooking, and swimming.

Sam Ellis

Sam joined MN in 2015 after graduating from Kansas State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics. He has continued his progress on the actuarial exams, earning his ASA and CERA designations with the SOA. He is now in pursuit of his fellowship in the SOA's Individual Life & Annuities track. Sam served as an officer of the Kansas City Actuaries Club, including one term as President. At MN, he has developed a broad range of skills and experience that are useful for life insurance and annuity companies, such as product development, cash flow testing, and valuation. He is particularly adept at utilizing AXIS models to assist clients with business management decisions. During his free time, Sam Likes to play pool, golf, and spoil his dogs.

Tim Verschelden - Managing Director

Tim specializes in the technical aspects of actuarial modeling, statutory and GAAP valuations, asset adequacy analysis, product development, and experience studies. His experience over the past 30+ years covers all types of traditional and interest sensitive life products and annuities. Practical application and interpretation of complex calculations, such as those required by Section 7702 of the Internal Revenue Code, is another area of his expertise. Tim's volunteer activities include serving as past President of the Kansas City Actuaries Club and years of service in church children's ministries and music ministries. He currently conducts a Sunday church service in a local nursing home on a monthly rotation.

Travis Wallander

Travis came to MN in 2012 after graduating from the University of Kansas with a degree in Economics. His experience at MN includes assistance on state insurance examinations, development and pricing of life insurance products, validation of reserves and cash values, yearly cash flow testing, and assisting the Appointed Actuary in drafting Actuarial Memorandums. Travis served eight years in the U.S. Marine Corps. His dedication and strong work ethic provides a solid foundation as he pursues the actuarial exams and completes projects in a timely manner. In his free time, Travis enjoys hunting, fishing, golf, and camping with his wife and five kids.

Trevor Huseman - VP

Trevor has over 18 years of experience in the life insurance and annuity industry. His areas of expertise include product development, pricing, modeling, valuation, asset adequacy analysis, and actuarial audits. Before his move to consulting, Trevor spent time with two insurance companies working to develop, grow, and maintain life insurance and annuity product portfolios. He has extensive experience with actuarial software conversions and assisting companies in the implementation of efficient and improved modeling practices. Trevor is an active volunteer, having served on a variety of committees for both the Society of Actuaries and American Academy of Actuaries. He is also a frequent presenter for the Society of Actuaries and American Fraternal Alliance. Away from the office, Trevor enjoys playing golf, watching sports, and spending time with his wife and two kids.
