Subdivision has proven to be a powerful tool for interactive geometric surface modeling, providing general, uniform models that are scalable, numerically robust, and able to handle arbitrary topology. Prof. Peter Schröder (and the Caltech Multi-Res Modeling Group) have been leaders in the development of subdivision methods for graphics applications. The Multiresolution Simulation & Engineering Design Group (mRSED) is working to extend and integrate the subdivision paradigm with other multiresolution approaches such as dynamic model reduction and set-based design methods, for application in engineering simulation and design, with an initial emphasis on thin-shell finite element modeling.
