Darragh O'Connor

Job Titles:
  • Student Spotlights /
Darragh graduated in 2011 from Dalhousie University with a BSc having studied the Petrogenesis of nepheline syenites and phonolites from the lofdal intrusive complex, Kunene region, Namibia. in 2012 and 2013 Darragh was an intern with Imperial Oil in Calgary. In 2016 he completed his MSc at Dalhousie University and researched the Facies distribution, fluvial architecture, provenance, diagenesis, and reservoir quality of synrift successions from the breakup of Pangea: examples from the Fundy Basin and Orpheus Graben. From 2016-2019 Darragh was a Research Manager in the Basins studies department of Dalhousie University before joining us at NARG. Darragh's project will be fully funded by NARG and using data provided by TGS, BP and other NARG sponsors.

Dr Andrew Gardiner

Job Titles:
  • Associate Professor

Dr Cathy Hollis

Job Titles:
  • Senior Lecturer in Petrophysics and Production Geoscience
Dr Cathy Hollis co-ordinates carbonate research within the Basin Studies Group. She is a carbonate sedimentologist, specialising in diagenesis and pore system characterisation, with over 15 years postdoctoral experience, primarily within the oil industry. Prior to joining the University of Manchester, she spent 6 years as a consultant carbonate reservoir geologist and Team Leader for Badley Ashton and Associates (1995-2001), before joining Shell International Exploration and Production as a production geologist (2001-2005), Carbonate Team Leader and Subject Matter Expert in carbonate diagenesis (2005- 2007). Her research focuses upon conceptual reconstruction of palaeo-fluid flow during diagenesis and the impact that post-depositional processes have on pore shape, size and connectivity. Current research projects concentrate upon fault-and fracture controlled burial diagenesis, including dolomitisation, within syn- and post-rift regimes. This work utilizes field, petrographical and low temperature geochemical data to reconstruct the post-depositional modification of carbonate sediments during basin evolution. It is delivering quantitative geometrical data, conceptual and reactive transport models to explain the timing, shape, size and distribution of diagenetic products.

Prof Dorrik Stow

Job Titles:

Prof Giovanni Bertotti

Job Titles:
  • Professor of Applied Geology at the Department Geoscience & Engineering
Giovanni Bertotti is Professor of Applied Geology at the Department Geoscience & Engineering of the Delft University of Technology (TUD). He was born in Italy where he did his studies until his "Laurea" in Earth Sciences obtained at the University of Pisa. His PhD Thesis on the Mesozoic rifting evolution of the Lombardian sector of the Southern Alps was supervised by D. Bernoulli and S. Schmid. In 1991 Giovanni came to Amsterdam in the group of Sierd Cloetingh first as a post-doc, then as lecturer and, since 2001, as Associate Professor. During this period of time, Giovanni worked at strengthening field geological research and pushing forward the integration with the numerical modelling techniques being developed at the VU. In recent years, Giovanni has developed new research lines focusing on the tectonics of Morocco, Turkey and the Tyrrhenian margins. He is increasingly interested in the quantitative aspects of geological field work.

Prof Jonathan Redfern

Job Titles:
  • Director
  • Research Director
  • Professor
  • Professor of Petroleum Geoscience, NARG Director
Professor Jonathan Redfern founded the North Africa Research Group in 2000. He is Chair of Petroleum Geoscience and Head of the Basin Studies and Petroleum Geoscience and Engineering Group at the University of Manchester. He obtained a BSc in Geology from Chelsea College London and a PhD at Bristol University. Prior to joining academia Jonathan had 15 years experience in industry. He began his career in the oil industry in 1984, working for Fina UK in the North Sea. before joining international new ventures based in Singapore, later managing regional studies in Libya and across North Africa. He subsequently joined Amerada Hess, as part of a specialist new ventures team, with a global remit, and latterly as Chief Geologist in Indonesia. His research expertise lies in regional petroleum system analysis, basin modeling and clastic/ glacial sedimentology. He is a Fellow of The Geological Society and member of the AAPG and PESGB. He is also an associate editor of the AAPG Bulletin and the Journal of Petroleum Geology. Our success is built upon a strong track record of delivering world-class research that has direct applicability to exploration and development projects across Africa, and forging strong links with all our collaborative partners and industry sponsors.
