Dr Colin Clement

Colin Clement is a Sydney based ophthalmologist with expertise in the diagnosis and management of glaucoma, cataract and general ophthalmology. He provides consultation at the Eye Associates (Macquarie Street, Sydney), North Shore Eye Centre (St Leonards) and Wyong Eye Surgery with surgery offered at the Ophthalmic Surgery Centre (Chatswood) and Central Coast Day Hospital (Erina). He is also a staff specialist in the glaucoma unit at Sydney Eye Hospital and a clinical senior lecturer in ophthalmology at the University of Sydney. In 1994, Dr Clement graduated from the University of Sydney with a Bachelor of Science (1st class honours). He spent the next 3 years researching the neurophysiology of neural networks in the spinal cord and brainstem coordinating reactions to pain. He was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from the University of Sydney for this work in 1999. Dr Clement studied Medicine and Surgery at the University of Sydney, graduating in 2001. Following 3 years of general resident training at the Royal North Shore Hospital (St Leonards), he then completed a glaucoma research fellowship at Eye Associates (Sydney) with Professor Ivan Goldberg. In 2005, he commenced advanced vocational ophthalmology training at Sydney Eye Hospital. In 2009, Dr Clement moved to the United Kingdom to undertake subspecialty fellowship training and initially worked as a fellow in clinical ophthalmology at the Royal United Hospital (Bath, UK) where he helped Mr Roger Baer run the glaucoma service. In 2010, he was appointed senior glaucoma fellow at the Western Eye Hospital (London, UK) where he worked with Professor Philip Bloom and Professor Francesca Cordeiro. In this role he was an investigator in 3 clinical trials on glaucoma and gained advanced training in glaucoma surgery including trabeculectomy, glaucoma drainage device surgery, endoscopic cyclophotocoagulation and the Glaukos iStent. He received a grant from Glaucoma Australia to attend the University of Geneva (Switzerland) in early 2011 to learn novel surgical techniques for glaucoma management with Professor Tarek Shaarawy. In addition to clinical and research activities, Dr Clement is passionate about medical education and research. As a clinical senior lecturer for the University of Sydney, he gives lectures and tutorials in ophthalmology to medical and masters students, nurses, optometrists and other medical staff. Dr Clement has provided peer review for many ophthalmology journals including Ophthalmology The British Journal of Ophthalmology The Indian Journal of Ophthalmology Graefe's Archive for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology Ophthalmic Research Clinical Ophthalmology Clinical Optometry Dr Clement is an associate managing editor for the Journal of Current Glaucoma Practice. Dr Daniel Polya

Dr Polya is a vitreoretinal surgeon and a medical retina specialist. He graduated from the Melbourne University Medical School, and completed ophthalmology training at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital in Melbourne. He completed a Master of Public Heath at the University of NSW with a thesis in Clinical Risk Management and Patient Safety. Dr Polya completed the two year Michael Shae Fellowship in Diseases and Surgery of the Retina and Vitreous at St Michael's Hospital, affiliated with the University of Toronto in Canada, where he was chief fellow of the Department of Ophthalmology. During this fellowship, at Canada's busiest retinal service, he also received further subspecialist experience in uveitis and ocular oncology. Dan commenced private practice as the only vitreoretinal surgeon in the province of New Brunswick, Canada in 2007 and was appointed as a clinical lecturer in the Department of Ophthalmology at Dalhousie University. He has performed thousands of surgeries for cataract and retinal disorders, and has performed many thousands of intravitreal injections and laser procedures. He has been involved in the teaching and training of ophthalmology residents, medical students, general practitioners, optometrists and optometry students. Dan has been involved in clinical trials for macular degeneration and has been active in research into diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusion, macular degeneration and sutureless vitrectomy surgery. He has authored and co-authored multiple published manuscripts in international journals and a book chapter on sutureless vitrectomy. He has presented at several international ophthalmic meetings, and has been an invited speaker at other professional meetings. He is a fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. He is a member of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Retina Specialists, Oceania Retina Association, American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Retina Specialists, Canadian Ophthalmological Society, Canadian Retina Society, and Australian Medical Association. His special clinical interests are in small-gauge vitrectomy surgery for retinal detachment, vitreous hemorrhage, macular hole and epiretinal membrane; and intravitreal and laser therapy for age related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and retinal vascular occlusions.

Dr Helen Do

Dr Helen Do is an ophthalmic surgeon specialising in medical retina and cataract surgery. She graduated medicine from University of New South Wales with first class honours and gained a Masters of Medicine in Ophthalmic Science at University of Sydney during which she wrote a treatise on retinal vein occlusions. She completed her ophthalmology training through the Sydney Eye Hospital program including training at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and Liverpool Hospital. She also performed outreach programs to rural Northern Territory based from Royal Darwin Hospital. This was followed by further training in complex cataract surgery and acute ophthalmology at Concord Hospital during her fellowship year. She underwent a Medical Retina fellowship in Sydney as a Bayer Medical Retina Fellow. She has published in peer reviewed journals and dedicates time to ongoing research, with current projects in diabetic retinopathy and optical coherence tomography angiography. Dr Do is a staff specialist at Westmead Hospital where she is actively involved with registrar teaching. She is also a clinical lecturer at Macquarie University and University of Sydney.

Dr John Leaney

Dr John Leaney is a glaucoma specialist, neuro-ophthalmologist and cataract surgeon. John is a dual fellowship trained ophthalmologist specialising in glaucoma and neuro-ophthalmology. He performs cataract and glaucoma surgery with experience in a wide range of glaucoma surgical treatments including trabeculectomy, Baerveldt tube insertion and Xen implantation. John undertook his medical training at Sydney University followed by internship and residency at Prince of Wales Hospital. This was followed by a PhD looking at early detection of glaucoma using electrical impulses from the brain at Macquarie University under Professor Stuart Graham. John commenced ophthalmology training at Sydney Eye Hospital in 2012, completing training in 2016. He then undertook a neuro-ophthalmology fellowship at the prestigious Moorfields eye hospital where he was involved in research dealing with the differentiation of glaucoma from other optic nerve diseases. Following this he spent a year at Addenbrookes Hospital under the tutelage of Professor Keith Martin. The fellowship involved the treatment of both medical and surgical glaucoma with a focus on inflammatory causes of glaucomatous disease. During his time at Addenbrookes he was also an investigator a multi-national trial looking at implantable long term glaucoma treatment. John is an honorary associate at the University of Sydney and has published in many journals including IOVS, Ophthalmology and Current Eye Research. He is currently involved in a multi-centre trial investigating the requirements for neuro-imaging in different types of optic nerve diseases.

Dr Kenneth Ooi

Dr Kenneth Ooi is a consultant general ophthalmologist and cataract surgeon with an interest in ocular inflammation including dry eye inflammatory states. He has completed his fellowship exam with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists through Prince of Wales Hospital and a Master of Surgery (Ophthalmology) with University College London and the University of Adelaide. He is undertaking a part-time PhD at the Save Sight Institute, Sydney Eye Hospital Campus, University of Sydney where he is a Clinical Senior Lecturer. He also holds a Conjoint Lecturer appointment at the School of Medical Sciences, UNSW and has several publications on ocular inflammatory states. He has completed a corneal clinical research fellowship with Prof. Stephanie Watson at Prince of Wales and Sydney Eye Hospital and a uveitis clinical research fellowship with Prof. Susan Lightman at Moorfields Eye Hospital and the Institute of Ophthalmology, London. He was Professorial Senior Ophthalmology Registrar to Prof. Minas Coroneo at Prince of Wales Hospital, Sydney. He has been awarded the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, University of Adelaide Annual Research Day Prize; Faculty of Health Sciences Divisional Scholarship, University of Adelaide; Fight for Sight Bursary, London; Save Sight Institute Grant, University of Sydney and nominated for the Troutman Cornea Prize for Young Clinician Investigators. In 2013 he was also nominated for the Best Early Stage Innovation for the UNSW Innovation Awards and granted an international patent for a novel dry eye drop - Topical Atorvastatin for Blepharitis and Dry Eyes with Prof. Stephanie Watson. He is also fluent in German and conversant in Cantonese and French.

Dr Matthew Spargo

Dr Matthew Spargo is an ophthalmic surgeon with subspecialty interests in paediatric ophthalmology, adult strabismus and cataract surgery. His subspecialty fellowship training took place at Birmingham Children's Hospital, Cheltenham General Hospital and Oxford University Hospital in the United Kingdom. He currently holds a position as a consultant ophthalmologist at Sydney Children's Hospital in Randwick. Dr Spargo graduated from medicine with Honours from The University of Sydney, proceeding to achieve a Master of Public Health degree. His specialty training in general ophthalmology was completed at The Prince of Wales Hospital and Sydney Children's Hospital, being the Professorial Senior Registrar in his final year. Dr Spargo has a keen interest in teaching and holds a position as a Conjoint Associate Lecturer at the University of New South Wales. He is also an active contributor to the academic literature, having published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at national meetings. His other passion in ophthalmology is delivering eye care services to rural and remote communities, offering his time to the Outback Eye Service, providing ophthalmic surgical care to communities in Western New South Wales.

Dr Michael Chilov

Dr Chilov is a Consultant at Concord Hospital where he is involved in the training of ophthalmology specialists-in-training in the diagnosis and treatment of retinal conditions and cataract surgery. He is a Clinical Associate Lecturer at the University of Sydney and Member of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Retina Specialists and American Society of Retinal Specialists.

Dr Michael G. Branley

Dr Michael G. Branley Specialises in macular degeneration, retina, uveitis & vitreoretinal conditions. He undertook sub-specialty fellowship training at Moorfields Eye Hospital (London, UK) and St Paul's Eye Hospital (Liverpool, UK). He is a consultant ophthalmologist at Royal North Shore and Concord Hospitals and is an on-call medical specialist for the Australian Navy Reserve.

Dr Noni Lewis

Dr Noni Lewis is a laser cataract, corneal and refractive surgeon who graduated with honours in Medicine and Surgery from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) and completed general ophthalmology training at The Prince of Wales Hospital and Outback Eye Service. Two further years subspecialty training was completed in Corneal surgery, External Disease and Cataract and Refractive surgery at the world renowned Moorfields Eye Hospital London. On her return Dr Lewis continued to provide services to rural and regional centres of NSW and was appointed to the Royal North Shore Hospital and Sydney Eye Hospital. Dr Lewis has been actively involved with the NSW State Branch Committee of RANZCO, Statewide Ophthalmology Services/Agency for Clinical Innovation Cornea working group, and advised the ophthalmology clinical indicators committee of the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards (ACHS). Dr Lewis is Term Supervisor for Advanced Trainees in Ophthalmology at Royal North Shore Hospital, teaching and supervising cataract and corneal surgery to training ophthalmologists and medical students. She regularly gives clinical presentations for Optometrists and General Practitioners. Dr Lewis is a reviewer for the American Academy of Ophthalmology journal Ophthalmology and for Masters of Ophthalmology students from the University of Sydney. Dr Lewis holds a Masters in Public Health from UNSW and is currently undertaking a Masters of Health Law at The University of Sydney. Her interests include laser cataract and refractive surgery, corneal collagen crosslinking for progressive keratoconus and corneal ectasia, ocular surface squamous neoplasia and corneal transplantation.

Dr. Simon Nothling

Outside of work, Simon is a very keen sportsman. He played club rugby union in Sydney for quite a few years, and is a recent Australian surf swimming champion. Surfing is also one of his passions and he has surfed some of the best surf breaks in the world. He has also worked voluntarily as a doctor in some of the remote islands of Indonesia and Fiji.
