Brian is the Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer(CECO)/Senior Associate Vice Chancellor - Research (SAVCR). As CECO, he is responsible for overseeing and implementing key compliance programs that ensure that UCSF fulfills its missions of high-quality research, clinical care, and teaching while preventing fraud, abuse, and waste. Brian is also responsible for management and oversight of multiple infrastructure components of the research enterprise. The SAVCR oversees the operation of the following research support services units: Environment, Health and Safety; Human Research Protection Program; Institutional Animal Care and Use Program; Laboratory Animal Resource Center; Research Development Office; Research Resource Program (Cores); and the International Research Support Office.

David Erle

Dr. Erle received an A.B. degree (Biochemistry) from Harvard College in 1980 and an M.D. degree from UCSF in 1984. He was trained in internal medicine and in pulmonary disease at UCSF. As a CVRI research fellow training at the UCSF Lung Biology Center, he studied leukocyte integrins with Robert Pytela and Dean Sheppard. He joined the Lung Biology Center faculty in 1990. His academic activities include laboratory research and clinical teaching. He founded the UCSF Functional Genomics Core Facility. He is a member of the Bakar ImmunoX Program, the Cardiovascular Research Institute, and the Institute for Human Genetics.

Dr. Gretchen Kiser

Dr. Gretchen Kiser is a research development professional with a strong foundation in academic research and the biotech industry, as well as 20 years-experience on the administrative side of the research enterprise. She holds a Ph.D. in Molecular and Cellular Biology, and as a Fellow and former President of the National Organization of Research Development Professionals, is a recognized expert in research development, team science, program development and management, faculty development, strategic planning, and technical writing. She works in partnership with individual faculty members, teams of researchers, external cross-sector stakeholders and institutional leadership and administrators to develop and implement strategies that increase institutional competitiveness, attract research funding, and foster innovation. As the Executive Director of the Research Development Office (RDO) at UCSF, Dr. Kiser also oversees a team that supports several programmatic areas: providing intra- and inter-institutional collaboration and large grant proposal development support; managing intramural funding competitions (RAP as well as others) and limited submission nominee selection (LSP); supporting training grants through the associated T32 trainee tracking system (3TS); as well as facilitating and supporting faculty development and campus strategic initiatives.

Edward Kuczynski

Edward joined the UCSF Office of Research as its Director of the Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) in May 2020. In this role, he oversees the UCSF HRPP, which is comprised of the Institutional Review Board (IRB) and its committees, the Quality Improvement Unit, and the Human Gamete, Embryo and Stem Cell Research (GESCR) Committee. Edward focuses on matters pertaining to ensuring the safety of participants in human studies research, determining whether research proposals require IRB review and approval, and expediting the processes and systems in place to approve and monitor research involving human participants at UCSF. As HRPP director, Edward reports to Senior Associate Vice Chancellor - Research Infrastructure & Operations Brian Smith and collaborates with Associate Director of Clinical Trials Payam Nahid through whom he connects with the Clinical Trialist Advisory Committee, a UCSF-wide advisory body on clinical trials operations. Edward has a background in strategic planning and business plan implementation for clinical research activities; experience building and directing clinical and research programs at Academic Medical Centers; and familiarity with creating de novo core clinical research support services. He has served as co-investigator on the NIH Clinical Network for Contraceptive Research grant, clinical site investigator for an NIH-funded grant studying Antiphospholipid Pregnancy Loss, and co-investigator on a March of Dimes program grant on risk factors for prematurity. More recently, Edward was a Strategic Advisor for Clinical and Translational Research Programs at the Stanford University Center for Clinical & Translational Research & Education. He has also served as the Director of Clinical Research Operations for the Tufts Clinical and Translational Science Institute, a consult lead for the Johns Hopkins University/Tufts University Trial Innovation Center, as well as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine.

Harold R Collard

Harold R Collard, MD, MS, is the Vice Chancellor for Research at UCSF. In this role, Dr. Collard oversees and stewards UCSF's research mission. UCSF is a global leader in health research, with faculty who have won nearly every leading prize in the health sciences. With top-ranked professional schools in Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmacy, and world-class graduate programs in the social and basic sciences, UCSF has been the National Institute of Health's top-funded public academic institution in the country for nearly a decade. Deeply committed to advancing UCSF's research mission, Dr. Collard previously served as Associate Vice Chancellor of Clinical Research and Director of UCSF's Clinical and Translational Science Institute. In this role, he helped to position UCSF as a leader in the NIH's national consortium of clinical research institutions and developed programs to support the needs of UCSF's clinical trialists and biospecimen-based researchers. During this time, Dr. Collard also helped lead UCSF's research community through the early SARS CoV-2 pandemic, advocating strongly for the needs of the research community. Dr. Collard received his A.B. cum laude in Biochemical Sciences and Molecular Biology from Harvard College, and his M.D. from Duke University. He completed Internship, Residency, and Chief Residency in Internal Medicine at UCSF, and completed Fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Colorado. As part of his research training, Dr. Collard earned a Certificate in Clinical Science from the University of Colorado and an M.S. in Health Law and Policy from the University of California Hastings College of the Law and UCSF. Dr. Collard is currently Professor of Medicine and Health Policy in the UCSF Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, Allergy and Sleep, Department of Medicine, School of Medicine.

Ida Sim

Ida Sim, MD, PhD is a primary care physician, informatics researcher, entrepreneur, and UCSF's first Chief Research Informatics Officer (CRIO), where she leads UCSF's research informatics strategy. She is a Professor of Medicine and UCSF Director of the UCSF UC Berkeley Joint Program in Computational Precision Health. Her other UCSF positions include Director of Digital Health for the Division of General Internal Medicine and Co-Director, Informatics and Research Innovation at UCSF's Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute. Dr. Sim is a global leader in the technology and policy of large-scale health data sharing. Dr. Sim is a co-founder of Open mHealth, a non-profit organization that is breaking down barriers to mobile health app and data integration through an open software architecture. Open mHealth is an IEEE family of global standards. IEEE 1752.1 was officially approved in 2021. Dr. Sim has multiple grants from NIH, NSF, and AHRQ on mobile health methodology and digital health for primary care. In 2019, she co-developed CommonHealth, an open source software suite bringing to the Android ecosystem the equivalent of Apple Health's ability to access and share EHR data. Dr. Sim is also co-founder of Vivli, the world's largest data sharing platform for participant-level clinical trial data. In 2005, she was the founding Project Coordinator of the World Health Organization's International Clinical Trials Registry Platform, where she led the establishment of the first global policy on clinical trial registration. Dr. Sim has served on multiple advisory committees on health information infrastructure for clinical care and research, including committees of the National Research Council and National Academy of Medicine. She is a recipient of the United States Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), a Fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics, and a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation.

Joe Novotny

Joe is the Director of International Research Support Operations (IRSO), a unit launched in 2019 to support UCSF faculty and staff implementing research projects abroad in foreign countries. The goal of the IRSO office is to provide effective and efficient operational support and expert advice to faculty and program leaders who are either considering international work or are already engaging in international research. Previously, Joe worked for the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) supporting malaria elimination initiatives globally. Joe's work primarily focused on increasing access to quality healthcare in poor and underserved communities while improving national disease surveillance and logistics systems to help countries achieve their public health goals. He has on the ground experience supporting government health system strengthening in Southern Africa in Southeast Asia. Joe earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from Santa Clara University, followed by a Masters of Public Health from Boston University.

Mary Catherine "MC" Gaisbauer is the Business and Integration Manager reporting to Chief Ethics & Compliance Officer and Senior Associate Vice Chancellor of Research for UCSF. In this role, she is responsible for the research integration of the UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital of Oakland and other major research related strategic projects. She has a strong public sector financial background with a focus on research administration, international operations, and business process improvement. Previously, she served as UCSF's Assistant Controller, Contracts and Grants Accounting, and as the controller at several major US research institutions and a global public consultant/auditor. MC holds a BBA in Accounting from Texas Tech University.

Michael Lee

Michael joined the Research Resource Program (RRP) team in 2018 and currently serves as Executive Director. His goal is to support the development, implementation and support of programs that will have a broad impact across UCSF Core & Shared Resource Facilities and enhance UCSF research capabilities. By working with the broad stake holders to maintain communication channels and build bridges, the RRP team contributes to the success of UCSF cores and shared resources. Michael has been at UCSF since 2003, working in labs and Cores where he became increasingly engaged in meeting general challenges faced by the research community. He has also led and worked with individual Cores to improve their operations and has coordinated funding for much needed instrumentation and operational support. Previously, he was the Director for the Parnassus Flow Cytometry (PFCC) and Monoclonal Antibody Cores and continues to advise both Cores. He also is a member of the Bluestone lab, working on the development and continuation of clinical trials involving the use of Regulatory T cells (Tregs) for the treatment of various ailments such as Type-1 diabetes. Michael has a BA in Biology from UC Santa Cruz and an MS in Biomedical Laboratory Sciences from San Francisco State.

Payam Nahid

Dr. Nahid is Director of Clinical Trials Operations for UCSF in the Office of Research, and Professor in Residence in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, Department of Medicine at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and UCSF. In his Office of Research capacity, Dr. Nahid is responsible for setting strategic priorities for clinical trial support at UCSF and directing the development of resources and services that the UCSF clinical trial community needs to be successful.  Dr. Nahid is also a global health researcher and serves as the Director of the UCSF Center for Tuberculosis (TB), which aims to brings expertise across a range of disciplines to solve the problems that have historically undermined global TB elimination effort. He has led NIH- and CDC-funded field studies of TB diagnostics and clinical trials in TB therapeutics, including FDA-regulated studies. Dr. Nahid oversees NIH and Gates Foundation-sponsored TB biomarker discovery and qualification programs, serves as Chair of the Core Science Group for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's TB Trials Consortium and has led and contributed to WHO Task Forces focused on TB clinical trial designs and development of new TB regimens. Dr. Nahid leads and has contributed to the development of U.S. and international practice guidelines for the treatment of TB.

Dr. Nguyen is the Stephen J. McPhee, MD Endowed Chair in General Internal Medicine and Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). A general internist with a panel of diverse patients, Dr. Nguyen teaches medicine, health equity, and community-based participatory research (CBPR). He has conducted CBPR and intervention research with diverse populations including Chinese, Filipino, Hmong, Korean, and Vietnamese Americans on cancer control, tobacco control, hepatitis B and C screening, nutrition and physical activity, and end-of-life care. At the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, Dr. Nguyen is Co-Leader of the Cancer Control Program and Associate Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility. At the UCSF Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute, he is Director of the Research Action Group for Equity (RAGE) Core, which aims to increase diversity among research participants. Dr. Nguyen is Director of the Asian American Research Center on Health (ARCH). He was a Principal Investigator of the Asian American Network for Cancer Awareness, Research, and Training (AANCART), a national center funded by the NCI from 2000 to 2016. Dr. Nguyen is a Principal Investigator for SFBUILD, an NIH-funded partnership between San Francisco State University and UCSF to diversify the health research workforce and has served as a faculty and mentor for the NIA-funded UCSF Center for Aging in Diverse Communities and the UCSF National Clinical Scholars Program. Through these roles, Dr. Nguyen has addressed health disparities and health equity through research, training, and community engagement. Dr. Nguyen served as a Commissioner on President Barack Obama's Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders from 2011 to 2014 and as the Chair of the Commission from 2014 to 2017. Dr. Nguyen is a recipient of the UCSF Chancellor's Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Leadership Award.

Vanessa Jacoby

As AVC-CR, Dr. Jacoby directs UCSF's Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) and oversees all Office of Research clinical research programs. Partnering closely with the Office of Research executive leadership, the Provost, and the Deans of the School of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, and Pharmacy, the AVC-CR identifies and implements innovative programs and policies to address UCSF's clinical research needs. Dr. Jacoby is Professor and Vice Chair of Research for the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences. In her nearly two-decade career, she has conducted multiple studies to improve care for people with uterine fibroids, including clinical trials of new, minimally invasive surgical and medical therapies. Since the start of the pandemic, Dr. Jacoby has worked with multidisciplinary teams to study the impact of COVID-19 on reproductive health and outcomes. Dr. Jacoby's research has been driven by patient-centered outcomes, community partnerships, and recruitment of underrepresented study populations. She is a dedicated mentor who has been involved with many research training programs including the CTSI K Scholars program and the UCSF ARCHES program to support research faculty from historically excluded groups. Dr. Jacoby has served as faculty director for CTSI's Participant Recruitment Program since 2016. In this role, she has developed a deep understanding of the UCSF clinical research landscape and has proven highly effective in implementing impactful change for the institution.

As Assistant Vice Chancellor, Ms. Ward oversees the UCSF Office of Sponsored Research, which includes Research Management Services, Government and Business Contracts, Industry Contracts Division, and Subawards.
