Aidan P. O'Connor is the co-chair of the Firm's Criminal Defense Practice Group and a member of its Litigation Department, concentrating on criminal defense, internal investigations, and both commercial and complex civil litigation, including securities fraud matters.
Prior to entering private practice, Aidan was an Assistant United States Attorney in the District of New Jersey for 18 years, serving in the Criminal Division, the Organized Crime Strike Force, and as the chief of the Violent Crimes Unit.
A seasoned trial lawyer, Aidan has extensive courtroom experience as well as negotiation skills that bring resolutions to difficult cases in both civil and criminal contexts. His clients appreciate his creative problem solving, direct approach, and history of many successful settlements and decisions. He appears frequently in federal and state courts in New Jersey and New York.
Aidan has conducted internal investigations for corporate and public organizations and has represented private corporations, public entities nonprofit businesses and individuals in governmental investigations. He has also managed subpoena compliance issues for numerous entities. In addition, he has represented clients on matters involving civil RICO, the False Claims Act, securities fraud, regulatory issues, real estate, contract disputes, civil forfeiture and insurance issues.
Aidan's experience with criminal matters includes defending individuals against allegations of securities fraud, insurance fraud, health care fraud, tax evasion, bank and mortgage fraud, money laundering, public corruption, union corruption, kickback schemes, computer intrusions, hacking and other cybercrimes, embezzlement, trade secrets, antitrust matters, and federal grand jury investigations. He has also represented clients accused of assault, kidnapping, extortion, murder, theft, sexual offenses, drug and controlled dangerous substance offenses, and state parole violations in both state and federal courts, as well as municipal court matters. He has also argued cases before the Second and Third Circuit Courts of Appeals, as well as the Supreme Court of New Jersey.
During his tenure with the U.S. Attorney's Office, Aidan conducted hundreds of federal prosecutions involving long- and short-term investigations, grand jury presentations, witness interviews, wiretapping, and search warrants for offenses including organized crime, RICO, tax fraud and evasion, money laundering, theft of trade secrets, union corruption, embezzlement, commercial and insurance fraud, large stolen property rings, health care fraud, computer crimes, extortion, murder, robbery, and kidnapping.
Aidan has tried more than 20 federal jury trials, argued hundreds of motions and conducted scores of hearings involving organized crime, tax fraud, money laundering, government program fraud, racketeering, kidnapping, alien smuggling, homicide, bank robbery, narcotics trafficking, civil rights violations and other offenses.
He was a recipient of the Director's Award for Superior Performance as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for his successful prosecution of a RICO case involving hundreds of millions of dollars in excise tax fraud and organized crime. Previously, he was a litigation associate with Thacher Proffitt & Wood in New York City, where he conducted or assisted in civil trials involving banking and international maritime insurance in state and federal courts.

Alan Silber has litigated cases in numerous federal and state courts across the United States. He has also tried a variety of major white-collar cases involving RICO, bank, securities, telemarketing, health care, and wire and mail fraud as well as defended clients in money laundering cases of significant size and scope, kidnapping (representing a police officer), and murder. Alan is also experienced as counsel for claimants in civil and criminal forfeiture actions. He concentrates his practice on federal and state complex criminal litigation, as well as representing lawyers in disciplinary cases. Alan has appeared in complex civil litigation in state and federal courts as diverse as the Northern and Central Districts of California, the Northern and Southern Districts of Florida, the Western and Eastern Districts of Virginia, and the District of Hawaii.
Alan is a member of the state bars in New Jersey, New York, California, and Virginia, and is a New Jersey Certified Criminal Trial Attorney, a status granted by the Supreme Court of New Jersey's Board on Trial Attorney Certification. Fewer than 3 percent of New Jersey attorneys achieve this certification. In addition, Alan is admitted to practice in nine United States district courts and has litigated pro hac vice in more than a dozen other federal district courts. An experienced appellate advocate, Alan has appeared and litigated cases in the United States Supreme Court, five United States Courts of Appeals, the state appellate courts of New York and New Jersey, and in the Supreme Court of Oregon.
Outside of the courtroom, Alan has earned a reputation as a lecturer and author and as a drug law reformer for his work through a multitude of criminal defense bar associations. He was a three-term member of the Board of Directors of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL), having been elected in 2001, 2004, and 2016. He previously served on its Executive Committee as well as the Nominating Committee. He is currently a Third Circuit co-chair of the Lawyers' Assistance Committee (Strike Force representing other NACDL lawyers) and Third Circuit co-chair for the NACDL Amicus Committee. He is a member of the White Collar Committee. Alan previously served as chairman of the Drug Law Reform Committee, and of the Electronic Discovery Committee.
Alan was a founding member of the Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers of New Jersey and served as its eighth president. He was also a founding member of the board of directors of the New York State Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, and is a fellow of the American Board of Criminal Trial Attorneys. In 1995, he was appointed as the state bar representative on the Legislature's Sentencing Policy Study Commission.
When he lived in Virginia, from 2002 to 2005, Alan was the Fourth Circuit coordinator for the Lawyers Assistance Committee and the Fourth Circuit vice-chair of the Amicus Committee of NACDL.
Alan has appeared as a speaker in criminal defense seminars across the country and internationally, including in Virginia, New Jersey, New York, Florida, Louisiana, Washington, D.C., Oregon, Colorado, and England. His articles have appeared in The Champion (magazine of NACDL), Rutgers Law Review, The New Jersey Law Journal, and The Vindicator (magazine of Ohio Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers). He has lectured in New Jersey on forfeiture and across the country on ethics and trial strategy.
Alan has received recognition from a number of New Jersey and national organizations for his advocacy. In 2011, he received the Al Horn Award at the NORML Legal Seminar. The award is presented annually to one lawyer "in recognition and appreciation of a lifetime of ceaseless work to advance the cause of justice and for extraordinary support for NORML."

Alec R. Borenstein is counsel in the firm's Trusts & Estates, Corporate & Business Law, and Commercial Real Estate practice groups. His estate planning practice involves drafting wills and trusts, including revocable trusts, grantor trusts, and charitable trusts. Alec also advises business owners on business and succession planning, including operating agreements, shareholder agreements, and commercial leases. He enjoys educating business owners on the ways in which planning for a multitude of outcomes can greatly benefit the business's bottom line.
Alec proactively monitors the many changing laws that impact his clients daily to ensure plans are updated and that clients remain well-positioned for success, particularly from a tax perspective. Amanda J. Massey (née Muhaw) is counsel in the firm's Family Law practice. She has devoted the entirety of her practice to issues stemming from familial relationships of all origins, whether individuals are entering into a marriage, already bound by marriage, or bound by parentage or property alone. Amanda handles all aspects of family law matters, whether by way of litigation, negotiation, or alternative dispute resolution. She has represented individuals of various economic means and sexual orientation across the state, handling complex, high-conflict litigation as well as settlement negotiations. Amanda is sensitive to the various issues present in each matter, advocating with the intensity and compassion necessary for each client.
Amanda's experience in family law spans over a decade, including handling the following matters: negotiation and drafting of prenuptial agreements; the dissolution of marriage; child custody issues; the establishment or modification of child support and/or spousal support; equitable distribution; non-dissolution matters; and domestic violence. She regularly appears before the Superior Court of New Jersey, Family Part. Amanda also serves as an Early Settlement Panelist in Monmouth County where she volunteers her time to assist matrimonial matters work towards resolving the issues.
Upon graduation from law school, Amanda served as a Judicial Law Clerk for the Honorable James J. McGann, J.S.C., in the Special Civil Division of Monmouth County. Halfway through Amanda's clerkship, Judge McGann was reassigned, and Amanda concluded her clerkship handling Post-Judgment Matrimonial matters and Juvenile matters. Andrew Bayer's practice is devoted to municipal law, healthcare, commercial and employment defense litigation, and land use law with a specialty in affordable housing development. He has extensive experience in redevelopment and land use law and related litigation on behalf of public entities, land use boards and private developers. He regularly appears before all levels of New Jersey state and federal courts as well as the Office of Administrative Law.
In his municipal practice Andrew serves as corporation counsel and handles all aspects of a municipality's legal representation, including drafting all resolutions and ordinances, compliance with the Open Public Meetings Act, Open Public Records Law, Local Land and Buildings Law and the Local Public Contracts law. Denise Alvarez is a partner in the firm's Commercial Litigation practice group where her practice focuses on various forms of complex litigation in both federal and state courts and in arbitration. Ms. Alvarez has robust experience litigating matters involving bankruptcy, class actions, contracts, fiduciary duties, copyright, and antitrust, on behalf of companies in the media, finance, energy, insurance, and manufacturing industries.
Ms. Alvarez has been involved in successfully representing clients in a number of high profile matters, including one of North America's largest suppliers of chemical products in multidistrict antitrust litigation with over 70 consolidated cases, Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. in numerous contested matters and adversary proceedings in Bankruptcy Court, as well as in successful mediations, and the National Geographic Society in class action copyright infringement matters involving the Complete National Geographic, a compendium of all of the issues of National Geographic Magazine.
Ms. Alvarez has represented several pro-bono clients, including clients seeking to become naturalized citizens, seeking asylum and seeking to adopt foster children living with them. She recently successfully argued before the New Jersey Supreme Court on behalf of amicus curiae ACDL-NJ. In addition, Ms. Alvarez litigated Lozano v. City of Hazleton, with the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund (now LatinoJustice PRLDEF), where they secured a successful landmark result on behalf of several individuals who could not otherwise afford counsel.
Ms. Alvarez began her legal career at Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP, where she practiced in the Complex Commercial Litigation Group for 17 years before joining Pashman Stein in 2019.
