Barney first qualified as a lawyer in his native New Zealand in 1979. He was admitted to the British Columbia Bar in 1982 and has practiced in Victoria ever since. Over the years his has been a varied civil practice but his main area of interest now lies in the field of estate planning and administration, with the associated preparation of Wills, Trusts, Powers of Attorney, Representation Agreements and Advance Directives. He also has extensive experience in real estate matters. Barney has taught many classes in the Business Faculty at Camosun College and has been a frequent speaker at Public Legal Education Seminars and professional training courses conducted by the Law Society of British Columbia. He is a past member of the executive of the Victoria Bar Association and is a member of the Canadian Bar Association. Recreationally, Barney enjoys the outdoors and is a keen fisherman and hunter. In days gone by, he enjoyed sailing and was an avid tennis player, and he completed a number of marathons and many triathlons.
