Dr. Bryan K Rutledge

Dr. Rutledge received his undergraduate degree at the University of Virginia, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts with High Distinction in Biology. Prior to returning to the University of Virginia for medical school, Dr. Rutledge worked in a research laboratory at Johns Hopkins University. It was there that he first developed an interest in blood vessel growth (angiogenesis), an interest that eventually led him into the field of vitreoretinal disease. After medical school, Dr. Rutledge returned to the laboratory for a year, studying diseases of retinal blood vessel growth in diabetic patients. He went on to complete a year of internship and 3 years of ophthalmology residency at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, then traveled to Boston to complete a two-year fellowship in vitreoretinal disease and surgery at Tufts University's New England Medical Center. Since joining Retina-Vitreous Surgeons of Central New York in 1996, Dr. Rutledge has been an investigator in National Eye Institute and pharmaceutical industry sponsored clinical trials involving diseases such as diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and macular holes. He has co-authored numerous scientific publications, and his peers have consistently named him one of the "Best Doctors in America." Dr. Rutledge is actively engaged in teaching and mentoring medical students and ophthalmology residents. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at SUNY Upstate Medical University and is on the medical staff at the Syracuse VA Hospital. Dr. Rutledge is Board Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, and he is an active member of numerous professional organizations including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Retinal Specialists, the New York State Ophthalmological Society, and the American Medical Association. During his spare time, Dr. Rutledge enjoys vegetable gardening, kiteboarding, skateboarding, bicycling, kayaking, and birding. He has a son who is an optical engineer from the University of Rochester and a daughter who is in medical school at the University of Miami.

Dr. G Robert Hampton

Dr. Hampton is a Clinical Associate Professor at SUNY Upstate Medical University where he helps educate and mentor medical students and residents. An internationally recognized educator, he serves as a visiting surgeon with ORBIS International in 13 countries. He is the primary author of numerous scientific papers and book chapters and co-edited the first authoritative textbook on macular degeneration. He presents frequently at national medical meetings. A Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, Dr. Hampton is a member of the Retina Society, the American Society of Retinal Specialists, the Society of Heed Fellows, and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology. Dr. Hampton is a Senior Aviation Medical Examiner for the Federal Aviation Association and served on the national Aeromedical Standards Review Project, a joint undertaking of the FAA and the American Medical Association. Dr. Hampton is an FAA commercially-rated pilot and, in his spare time, also enjoys racing vintage hydroplanes, scuba diving, downhill skiing and creating fine art photography.

Dr. Kevin I Rosenberg

Dr. Rosenberg is an active member of multiple professional societies including the American Society of Retina Specialists and the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He has authored five peer reviewed papers and given presentations at national meetings on retinal disease. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor at SUNY Upstate Medical University where he helps to educate and mentor medical students and residents.

Dr. Paul F Torrisi

Dr.Paul Torrisi received his undergraduate Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology, cum laude, from Fordham University in New York City, 1968. He completed his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1972 from SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, N.Y. Following two years of Residency training in Internal Medicine he returned to Syracuse for three years of Ophthalmology Residency and a year of Vitreoretinal Surgical Fellowship training with William V. Delaney,M.D. at the Eye Research Foundation of Central New York. In 1978 he joined Dr. Delaney in private practice, founding Retina-Vitreous Surgeons of Central New York (RVS). In addition to his extremely busy and growing medical practice over the years, Dr. Torrisi has been an active investigator in National Eye Institute and industry sponsored research and clinical trials involving such conditions as Retinopathy of Prematurity, Diabetic Retinopathy, Age Related Macular Degeneration, Retinal Vascular Occlusive Disease, in addition to surgical treatments of Retinal Detachment and Diabetic vitreo-retinal disease. Dr. Torrisi has been Board Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology since 1978 and has been a member of multiple professional societies and organizations, including the American Society of Retinal Specialists, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and the New York State and Onondaga County Medical Societies. He is a Clinical Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at SUNY Upstate Medical University, continuing to help educate medical students and Ophthalmology residents in training. Dr. Torrisi has been repeatedly named to the "Best Doctors in America" by his peers, and enjoys his time with his wife of over forty years, his children and grandchildren. His hobbies include sailing, kayaking, swimming, tennis, biking, and alpine skiing.

Dr. Sam C Spalding, III

Dr. Spalding earned a Bachelor of Science/Medicine degree with Highest Honors at The University of Louisville, where he also completed Medical School and an Internship in Internal Medicine before moving to Atlanta to complete his Residency in Ophthalmology at Emory University. He served as Chief Resident during his third year and remained at Emory for two more years of Fellowship in Vitreoretinal Disease and Surgery. Dr. Spalding is Board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He is an active member of such professional societies as the American Society of Retina Specialists, American Academy of Ophthalmology, New York State Ophthalmological Society and New York State Medical Society. He has served as Chief of Ophthalmology at Crouse Hospital in Syracuse since 2008. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at SUNY Upstate Medical University and on the medical staff of the Syracuse Veterans Administration Hospital. In these local roles, he teaches ophthalmology residents and medical students. Since joining Retina-Vitreous Surgeons of Central New York in 1989, Dr. Spalding has participated in National Eye Institute and industry-sponsored clinical research projects related to diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, retinopathy of prematurity and macular hole surgery. He has co-authored publications in the peer reviewed literature and lectured at numerous regional and national meetings. He is consistently named among the "Best Doctors in America" by his peers. Dr. Spalding and his wife are very proud of their two grown sons who are both Eagle Scouts. Dr. Spalding enjoys woodworking, music, boating and other outdoor activities.

Dr. Tahsin Choudhury

Dr. Choudhury is a native of New York state, completing most of his early education in Newburgh, NY. While earning his undergraduate Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology with Honors at Johns Hopkins University, he began to explore his interests in ophthalmology through research in the role of vitamins in macular degeneration as well as nonsteroidal intravitreal injections at the Wilmer Eye Institute. Thereafter, he earned his Medical Degree at NYU in Manhattan while continuing to explore the retina in research projects and poster presentations on chronic retinal detachments. His ophthalmology residency training took place in Syracuse at the SUNY Upstate Medical Center. Dr. Choudhury then returned to Baltimore to complete a two-year vitreoretinal medical and surgical fellowship at National Retina Institute. Dr. Choudhury is Board Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He is an active member of multiple professional societies including the American Society of Retina Specialists, American Academy of Ophthalmology, and Onondaga County Medical Society. He is also on medical staff at the Syracuse VA and Clinical Assistant Professor at SUNY Upstate Medical University, where he helps to educate and mentor medical students and residents. Dr. Choudhury has a strong connection to Syracuse; not only was part of his training here, but his son was born here as well. During his spare time, Dr. Choudhury enjoys spending time with his wife and son, hiking, swimming, snowboarding, and building computers.
