Edward Kang

Edward's practice includes all aspects of intellectual property law with a focus on the preparation and prosecution of patent applications in mechanical, electrical and computer technologies. He has experience working with a wide range of clients, including independent inventors, small to mid-sized start-up companies and large multi-national corporations. Prior to law school, Edward obtained degrees in Computer Science and Mathematics from the University of Toronto and received an NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Award to conduct research in numerical analysis and scientific computing. Edward is fluent in Korean. He is a current Regional Governor (Canada) of the International Association of Korean Lawyers and a past president of the Korean Canadian Lawyers Association. Edward also serves on the Executive Committee of the Toronto Intellectual Property Group. Edward focuses his practice on the procurement and the protection of intellectual property rights. He draws on his background in computer science to help clients protect software-based innovations.

Fraser Rowand

Fraser works with entrepreneurs and entrepreneurial companies to help them secure and leverage their innovations, creativity and branding. Fraser has prepared and prosecuted hundreds of patent applications ranging from simple mechanical and software innovations to complex circuitry and mathematical algorithms. His practice involves a number of high-value applications with relevance to technical industry standards. A number of patents he has written and prosecuted have been commercially licensed and asserted in litigation. He regularly helps clients obtain valuable patent protection in Canada, the United States, Europe, and Asia. Fraser works with clients on the development of effective IP portfolio development and management strategies and provides guidance with regard to licensing and enforcement issues including validity, infringement, and freedom-to-operate opinions. Fraser has successfully represented clients in proceedings before the Federal Court, the Federal Court of Appeal, the Canadian Patent Appeal Board, the Canadian Trade-marks Opposition Board, and the United States Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences. Fraser is recognized by the Law Society of Ontario as a Certified Specialist in Intellectual Property Law (Patents). Fraser works with companies to help them protect and profit from their innovations, creativity and branding. He strives to provide and implement practical solutions that realize the client's strategic objectives.

Giselle Chin

Giselle is an intellectual property lawyer, regularly assisting clients in preparing and prosecuting patent and trademark applications in Canada and the US, and in developing holistic IP strategies. Giselle has extensive experience in the areas of medical imaging, mechanical devices, e-commerce, artificial intelligence, and green technology. A big supporter of innovation, Giselle has worked with both foreign and domestic patent offices to help Canadian clients to obtain patents in Canada, United States, Europe, and Asia. In addition to patent and trademark applications, Giselle provides opinions on patentability, infringement, validity and freedom-to-operate issues. She also represents clients in drafting complex IP licenses and agreements. Prior to law school, Giselle obtained degrees in Medical Physics and Economics. In her downtime, Giselle is an avid theatre buff and marathoner. Giselle regularly assists clients in preparing and prosecuting patent and trademark applications in Canada and the US, and in developing holistic IP strategies.

Jeff Tracey

Jeff regularly assists clients in developing and managing intellectual property portfolios. As a registered patent agent with a degree in Electrical Engineering, Jeff has assisted clients with patent preparation and prosecution, with an emphasis on electrical, mechanical, and computer related technology. Jeff has extensive experience dealing with both foreign and domestic patent offices and regularly helps Canadian clients to obtain patents both in Canada and abroad. Jeff has taken specialized training regarding United States and European intellectual property protection to better assist Canadian clients to obtain foreign intellectual property rights. Some of the fields and technologies that Jeff has worked with include gaming systems, fintech including mobile wallet applications and electronic trading systems, mobile devices, camera systems, cable television systems, wireless communication infrastructure, bandwidth management systems, and cannabis products. Jeff has extensive experience protecting blockchain innovations and is familiar with popular cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin and Ethereum. As a registered trade-mark agent, Jeff regularly assists clients to protect their brands. In this capacity, Jeff has assisted with trademark filings, opposition proceedings, cancellation proceedings, and trademark searches. Prior to commencing a legal career, Jeff worked in electrical and computer engineering for various businesses, including a large semiconductor developer and an automotive manufacturer. Jeff is recognized by the Law Society of Ontario as a Certified Specialist in Intellectual Property Law (Patents). Jeff assists clients to obtain and manage intellectual property. Jeff regularly utilizes his engineering background to help clients protect electrical, mechanical and computer related inventions.

Kelly Stewart

Kelly is a registered Patent Agent with the Canadian Intellectual Property Office and the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Kelly focuses in the areas of patent drafting, filing, and prosecution. He also helps his clients register industrial designs. With a background in Electrical Engineering, Kelly deals primarily with technologies in the electrical, computer, software, medical imaging, mechanical, and oil and gas fields. Kelly has extensive experience preparing patent applications within the fintech, blockchain and e-commerce space. Kelly has over ten years experience prosecuting patent applications in Canada, the United States, Europe and Asia. Kelly's ability to quickly understand new technologies allows him to prepare detailed and creative patent applications in an effort to maximize patent protection. Prior to becoming a Patent Agent, Kelly gained engineering experience in the power engineering industry and completed an internship with one of the world's top engineering companies. Kelly previously sat as Chair of the Toronto Intellectual Property Group. He is a member of the Information, Communication & Technology Committee for the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada and is an active member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association. Outside of the office, Kelly enjoys playing hockey, golf and squash.

Rex Yeung

Rex is an intellectual property lawyer who completed his Juris Doctor degree in 2020 and was called to the bar in 2021. Before becoming a lawyer, Rex worked as a computer engineer in various tech companies in the web development, gaming, and artificial intelligence industry. This combination of legal and technical expertise allows him to understand the intricacies of patenting complex inventions and provide clients with valuable advice and representation.

Stephanie Hazen

Stephanie is a patent agent specializing in the preparation, prosecution, and analysis of Canadian and United States patent applications and industrial design applications. Her practice focuses on the electrical and computer-related arts, with particular experience in the fields of fintech, wireless communication technologies, artificial intelligence, and computer-based measurement and automation. She has considerable experience working with foreign associates to obtain patent protection in foreign jurisdictions. A native Canadian, Stephanie has lived in the United States and had practiced as a technical consultant for a prominent U.S. intellectual property firm prior to working with Rowand LLP. Before beginning her career in patent law, Stephanie worked as an electrical engineer with IBM Canada, ATI Technologies (now AMD Canada) and Nortel Networks. Stephanie holds a Bachelor of Science in Engineering (B.Sc.E.) degree in Mathematics and Engineering (Electrical option). Stephanie is a registered Patent Agent with the Canadian Intellectual Property Office and the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
