SAVE THE VAAL ENVIRONMENT (SAVE) is a non-profit organisation formed in the 1990's to protect the Vaal River and its environs from pollution. SAVE's mandate extends from the Vaal Dam in the east to Parys in the west... SAVE is on the point of returning to court when he Gauteng Premier places Emfuleni Local Council under partial administration in June. SAVE meets with the Gauteng COGTA team that was tasked with implementing the turn-around strategy in July. Assurances were given that a plan was in place to stop the pollution. This plan was never implemented... SAVE maintains pressure on the authorities and builds awareness through various media campaigns. All the issues point to the looming pollution crisis as a result of the unacceptable amounts of raw and partially treated sewage being dumped in the Vaal River by local councils.
