Anne E. Walters

Anne Walters is a Partner at Shimberg & Friel and licensed to practice in the state and federal courts of New Jersey and Pennsylvania. She recently returned to the firm after having worked in the public sector for many years, most recently as the Director of the Camden County Department of Health and Human Services, where she managed all matters relating to communicable diseases, consumer and environmental health, mental health and addiction, and senior and disabled services. Prior to her legal career, Ms. Walters obtained her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Duke University and worked as a pediatric & medical surgical nurse. Ms. Walters then went on to attend law school at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law. Upon graduation, Ms. Walters spent many years in private practice at various firms, where she focused on handling all aspects of multi-state litigation matters for major insurance carriers and self-insureds in cases involving product liability, commercial litigation, employment law, professional liability, and general negligence defense. She worked at Shimberg & Friel from 2005-2012, where she handled a varied case load involving product liability, general negligence defense, professional liability, commercial litigation, civil rights, automotive, employment and municipal law matters. In 2012, Ms. Walters began her career in public service. She served as Assistant County Counsel for the County of Camden, New Jersey, where she handled employment, personal injury, and civil rights actions in cases involving county departments in state and federal courts. Ms. Walters has significant trial experience handling complex matters through all stages of litigation. Ms. Walters also serves as a volunteer member of the District IV New Jersey Attorney Ethics Committee. Ms. Walters is a lifelong Haddonfield resident and enjoys spending time at the Jersey Shore. She is an avid marathon runner and loves Philadelphia sports, especially the Eagles.

Barbara R. Riefberg

Ms. Riefberg is Of Counsel to the firm and primarily handles the firm's construction litigation, in which she defends contractors and subcontractors in complex legal matters. She also handles many of the firm's complex products liability matters, in which she defends manufacturers and distributors from strict liability and successor liability claims. Ms. Riefberg is licensed to practice in the state and federal courts of New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Ms. Riefberg attended the State University of New York at Albany for her undergraduate education and then went on to graduate from Rutgers University School of Law (Camden) in 1981. She has been in private practice for over 40 years. Her years of practice have focused on civil litigation, estate planning, real estate, family law and workers' compensation. She also represents members of the New Jersey Education Association - the largest labor union in New Jersey - in work-related and personal legal matters. Ms. Riefberg has represented NJEA employees before many state administrative agencies, including the Commissioner of Education, Division of Workers' Compensation and Division of Pensions. Ms. Riefberg is an avid golfer and active member of Little Mill Country Club, where she competes in Golf Association of Philadelphia matches and other club-sponsored tournaments.

Charles Shimberg - CEO

Charles Shimberg is the Managing Partner of Shimberg & Friel. Mr. Shimberg has been a litigator and trial lawyer for over thirty years, representing clients in high-exposure cases involving general negligence, product liability, commercial motor vehicle and construction site accidents. Mr. Shimberg has also defended mortgage companies in various commercial matters and insurance companies in coverage disputes. He is admitted to practice in both state and federal courts in New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. Mr. Shimberg has maintained an active trial and appellate practice since originally starting his own firm in 1993. He has tried cases in the Superior Court of New Jersey, Supreme Court of New York and Courts of Common Pleas in Pennsylvania. In addition, he has argued appeals in the New Jersey Appellate Courts. He previously served as Solicitor for the Camden County Fire Chiefs and Fire Officers Association, Solicitor for the Haddon Township Board of Fire Commissioners (Fire District Number One), and Planning and Zoning Boards, Solicitor for a municipality, Special Counsel to a township regarding land use matters, and for over twelve years, a Public Defender in various municipalities. Mr. Shimberg holds a B.A. in History from Syracuse University (1988), where he received Dean's List honors and was a member of Phi Alpha Theta, the History National Honor Society. He earned his J.D. from Villanova University School of Law (1991). He is admitted to practice law in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New York. A lifelong South Jersey resident, Mr. Shimberg has always been active in his community, having served as a volunteer firefighter for Haddon Fire Company #1 for over ten years.

Donald S. Ryan

Donald Ryan, Of Counsel to the firm, focuses his practice on residential and commercial real estate, estate planning, estate administration, land use development, and contract drafting and interpretation. Prior to joining the firm, he worked as an attorney in private practice for over fifty years. Mr. Ryan is admitted to practice in the State of New Jersey, the Federal District Court of New Jersey, the U.S. Third Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court. He attended Colgate University for his undergraduate education and then went on to graduate from Rutgers University School of Law in 1968. Mr. Ryan has deep roots in the South Jersey area. He is a lifelong resident of Haddonfield and held many solicitorships on various zoning and planning boards from 1974-2018. He served as a Haddonfield municipal prosecutor for twenty-five years. Mr. Ryan loves spending time with his family, especially his six grandchildren. In his free time, he enjoys playing tennis and umpiring little league baseball games.

Jeffrey S. Karl

Jeffrey Karl, Of Counsel to the firm, focuses his practice on all aspects of family law, including divorce, alimony, child custody, and child support. Prior to joining the firm, he was a solo practitioner for over forty years, focusing on family law and personal injury matters. Mr. Karl is licensed to practice law in the State of New Jersey, the Federal District Court of New Jersey, the Third Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court. Mr. Karl has extensive family law experience and has been certified as a Court-Approved Family Law Mediator. Prior to his time in private practice, he worked as prosecutor for Cherry Hill Municipal Court from 1989-1997. Mr. Karl attended Muhlenberg College for his undergraduate schooling, and went on to attend law school at Seton Hall. Mr. Karl is an avid golfer and enjoys playing in the warmer months.

Kathleen D. Friel

Kathleen D. Friel, admitted to practice in Pennsylvania and New Jersey and in the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey, concentrated her practice in defending civil litigation matters. Before entering private practice, Ms. Friel served as in-house Counsel in the Legal Services Office of Cigna Property & Casualty Co. gaining valuable experience handling insurance defense matters for Cigna, a leader in the insurance industry. Ms. Friel had several years of litigation experience with her prior firm handling the defense of medical malpractice cases. She used that knowledge and experience in successfully defending cases involving medical terminology and disease progression. In her private practice, Ms. Friel handled all phases of commercial and general litigation matters from drafting pleadings, discovery requests and responses to discovery requests, review and analysis of legal research, drafting and arguing motions, taking lay witness and expert depositions, attending scheduling, settlement and trial conferences with the court and other pre-trial proceedings. Ms. Friel also had years of experience in handling depositions, arguing motions, attending hearings and conferences in both state and federal courts. Kathleen graduated from the College of New Jersey in 1991 and Widener University School of Law in 1996. While at Widener, she was a staff member of Widener's principal law review, the Delaware Journal of Corporate Law.

Mary T. Madden

Mary T. Madden is an Associate with the firm, licensed to practice in the state and federal courts of New Jersey and the state court of Pennsylvania. She focuses her practice on complex civil litigation in the areas of personal injury, products liability, and premises liability. Prior to joining the firm, Ms. Madden was an Associate at a New Jersey firm, where she focused her practice on real estate, landlord tenant, contract disputes, bankruptcy, and estate planning. Ms. Madden obtained a Bachelor of Science in International Area Studies and graduated cum laude from Drexel University (2002). She graduated from Widener University School of Law in 2015. During law school, Ms. Madden was a member of the Transactional Law Competition Team and Transactional Law Honor Society. She also served as a board member and Articles Editor on the Delaware Journal of Corporate Law. After law school, Ms. Madden served as a Judicial Law Clerk to the Honorable Sherri L. Schweitzer, J.S.C in the Superior Court of New Jersey, Camden County, where she was certified as a mediator. Ms. Madden is an avid reader and loves to travel. She also enjoys hiking, canoeing, and snowshoeing.

Nancy A. Nolan

Nancy Nolan is a partner at Shimberg & Friel and licensed to practice in both the state and federal courts of Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Ms. Nolan's practice includes defending clients in personal injury, products liability, professional liability and commercial litigation matters, with a focus on defending suits involving elevator accident-related injuries. For over a decade, Ms. Nolan has been primary counsel in the region for a global elevator/escalator company, defending the company in products liability, negligence, and catastrophic injury suits. Prior to joining the firm, Ms. Nolan was a partner at a large Philadelphia law firm, where she focused her practice on professional liability defense litigation. She gained extensive trial experience, handling matters through all stages of litigation. Ms. Nolan graduated magna cum laude from LaSalle College in 1983. She then went on to study at Dickinson School of Law, where she was a published member of the Law Review. After law school, Ms. Nolan served as law clerk to the Honorable Lawrence Brown in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. Ms. Nolan is an avid reader and enjoys playing disc-golf with her family in her free time. During the colder months, she spends a lot of her time in the Pocono's at her family cabin. During the summer months, she enjoys spending time at beach.

Nicholas W. Kaulback

Nicholas Kaulback is an Associate with Shimberg & Friel and is licensed to practice law in the State and District Courts of New Jersey. Mr. Kaulback focuses his practice on complex civil litigation in the areas of catastrophic personal injury, products liability, premises liability, contractual disputes and commercial collections. Mr. Kaulback attended Delaware Law School and graduated in 2018. While in law school, he was a member of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Society and winner of the ADR Society's 2018 competition. Mr. Kaulback completed his undergraduate education at Temple University, where he graduated in 2014 with a Bachelor of the Arts in Anthropology. After law school, Mr. Kaulback served as judicial law clerk to the Hon. William F. Ziegler, J.S.C. in the Chancery Division, Family Part of both Gloucester and Salem County, New Jersey, and was primarily assigned to the matrimonial litigation docket. He mediated a number of Family Part and Special Civil Part disputes throughout his clerkship and was also certified as a mediator by the Superior Court of New Jersey. Mr. Kaulback graduated from Haddonfield Memorial High school in 2010 and was a member of HMHS' 2009 state championship golf team. Mr. Kaulback remains an avid golfer and is an active member of Tavistock Country Club in Haddonfield, New Jersey.

Sara K. Saltsman

Sara K. Saltsman is an Associate with Shimberg & Friel and is licensed to practice law in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York and the United States District Courts for New Jersey and the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. Ms. Saltsman's current practice includes the defense of personal injury, products liability, premises liability, construction defect, motor vehicle liability and general negligence matters. Prior to joining the firm, Ms. Saltsman was an Associate at another Cherry Hill firm, where she had a similar practice and also managed the firm's toxic tort litigation. Her past experience includes serving as an Assistant General Counsel for the New York City Department of Citywide Administrative Services, where she handled employment matters for several City agencies, and practicing real estate law in Albany, New York. Ms. Saltsman obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Union College in 1998, magna cum laude. She was awarded departmental honors and was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa and Pi Sigma Alpha honor societies. Ms. Saltsman received her Juris Doctor from Fordham University School of Law in 2001, where she was a member of the Intellectual Property, Media & Entertainment Law Journal and served as a research assistant in the area of alternative dispute resolution. In her free time, Ms. Saltsman enjoys spending time with her family, exploring the outdoors and traveling.
