Abby L. Thurman

Abby Thurman joined Smith-Goth Engineers in 2005 as a project engineer, and became a co-owner and principal in 2013. As a Springfield native, she began her education at Drury University, completing a B.A. in Mathematics in 2003. She continued her education at the University of Missouri - Columbia, receiving a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering in 2005 before returning to Springfield to begin her career with Smith-Goth Engineers. During her career, Abby has had the opportunity to work with multiple experienced engineers on a wide range of projects gaining invaluable knowledge and experience in a short amount of time. She has become a leader in energy modeling and sustainable solutions having participated on multiple LEED design teams, including one project that has received LEED Gold certification. As a principal engineer, she plays an integral role in the production of construction documents and specifications, as well as project management and quality control. Her design experience includes large industrial buildings, medical facilities, schools and universities, conference centers, retail centers, office buildings, museums, aquariums and places of worship. Abby specializes in developing innovative mechanical designs from concept to reality.

Brent L. Courter

Brent Courter joined Smith-Goth Engineers in 2002 as a project engineer after receiving a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Lawrence Technological University (Southfield, MI). He became a co-owner and principal in 2013. During his career Brent has gained valuable experience in all aspects of electrical design and commercial construction. He is comfortable working on projects of all types and complexity and is an asset to any design team, bringing valuable experience and knowledge to each project. Brent serves as the principal engineer on many projects and remains involved as the lead electrical designer on numerous others. As a principal engineer, he is responsible for management of the firm along with project management and quality control. He has designed electrical systems and lighting for all types of construction including educational facilities, medical facilities, retail centers, office buildings, places of worship, industrial facilities, museums, aquariums and athletic fields. As a member of the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES), Brent pursues and promotes lighting and controls that maximize energy efficiency while keeping the comfort of the occupant at the forefront. Brent specializes in finding efficient, cost-effective solutions for projects of all sizes.
