Alex Baron graduated from the University of Alberta Augustana Campus in 2012 with a Bachelor of Arts - English, and then completed a Bachelor of Arts - Communications from the University of Calgary in 2016. In his career, Alex has had the opportunity to work in some truly unique places, allowing him to pursue his two key interests - creating memorable guest experiences and telling great stories. This includes working at the Walt Disney World Resort, Heritage Park Historical Village, and the University of Calgary. His interests outside of work include travel and photography.

Anna Maria (Ania) Bilik's dedication to human-centred design and solutions grew from her educational and practical background in Design and Psychology. Ania graduated in Fine Arts from the University of Calgary and in Psychology from SWPS University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Poznan, Poland. While studying in Poland, Ania was involved in various non-profit organizations focusing on social good, notably the European Union's students program, Erasmus Student Network. After graduation, Ania continued engaging in Calgary's tech scene as an active member of Calgary UX, IncluCity Calgary, and CITI (Careers In Technology and Innovation). Ania looks to bring the user's perspective into the digital space through design thinking and empathy. Her favourite aspect of the UX world is that it is led by curiosity, collaboration, the continuous need for learning and a genuine desire to better society by finding the most effortless solutions. In her free time, Ania enjoys painting, taking photos, cooking, playing tennis in the summer and skiing in the winter.
Anna has a degree in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology from the University of Alberta. During this time, she completed her undergraduate thesis at the Cross Cancer Institute with a focus on the DNA damage response. Anna has also completed her graduate studies in the Master of Biomedical Technology program at the University of Calgary.
Prior to joining W21C, Anna has been involved in a wide variety of work, including interactive elementary science education and industrial environmental monitoring. Anna's research interests include science communication, knowledge translation, and healthcare innovation.
Outside of work, Anna is an avid book-buyer and book-reader (which are two very distinct hobbies), as well as a nature enthusiast. You can often find her planning a trip to the mountains, to the beach, or to the library.

Arman earned his Bachelor of Technology in biotechnology from Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University (SGGSWU), in India. In his career, he has been involved in multinational clinical trials from Phase I to Phase IV. He has also completed the Society of Clinical Research Associates (SOCRA) certification program and is a Certified Clinical Research Professional (CCRP). At W21C, Arman utilizes his knowledge in clinical research to support both investigator and industry-led clinical trials projects. Outside of work, Arman enjoys staying active either by working out in the gym or spending some time in nature.

Darlene received her BScN from the University of Alberta. Her past experience includes working as both an RN in the hospital setting and with Home Care in the community setting. She began working with the University of Calgary as a research nurse in 2008 assisting nephrology clinical trials with Dr. Sofia Ahmed.
Darlene joined W21C in 2014 and her current research projects include two clinical trials: a novel sensing study, that is testing a pressure mattress pad in patients at high risk for pressure injury led by Dr. Chester Ho, and the STRIVE study, which is a Phase 2 vaccine clinical trial for surgical patients led by Dr. John Conly.
In 2017, Darlene completed her Society of Clinical Research Associates (SOCRA) certification program earning the title of Certified Clinical Research Professional (CCRP).

Debbie is completing her practicum at W21C as a Kinesiology student from the University of Alberta. Prior to joining W21C, Debbie helped to develop rehabilitation innovations and interventions for individuals with neural injuries and acute stroke patients to improve their function and quality of life. She is passionate about enhancing patient care with innovative and efficient healthcare technologies. Outside of work, Debbie enjoys playing sports, cooking and reading books.
Debbie graduated from the University of Lethbridge's nursing program in 2000. Her first nursing position was as an RN on Foothills Medical Centre Unit 61, the unit that was transformed into W21C. Debbie has travelled and practiced her nursing skills in Nashville, Philadelphia and Seattle in pediatrics, bone marrow transplant and medical and surgical units. Debbie eventually returned to Calgary and W21C because she missed working with the fabulous team. She became a clinical instructor for the University of Calgary and Mount Royal University and has taught in all three hospitals within Calgary on multiple units. Debbie has a passion for teaching and went back to school and completed a Master of Nursing, specializing in Nursing Education, in 2009. Debbie has since been working as a Clinical Nurse Educator at W21C.
Dr Deborah White is a clinically trained nurse and a senior researcher in the Faculties of Nursing and Medicine at the University of Calgary. She is also the Dean and CEO of University of Calgary in Qatar and has over 20 years of experience in nursing education, both at the undergraduate and graduate level. Her research collaborations within the W21C focus on Patient Safety and Quality of Care, within three separate but linked areas: 1) health care workforce capability and development; 2) structures and processes in the work and learning environment; and 3) organizational practices and culture. Currently, Dr White is active on a number of CIHR funded patient safety initiatives and is leading a national study to examine the development, implementation, and impact of quality and safety teams in Canadian hospitals. The interdisciplinary research team involved in this study is composed of nurses, physicians, health decision makers, and graduate and undergraduate students. This overall umbrella of Patient Safety and Quality of Care fosters exploration of the interrelationship of the structural characteristics of care (i.e., provider, patient, necessary resources and support to deliver care), the care processes (i.e., what care providers do), the context in which care occurs, and their relationship to provider, patient and system outcomes. By studying these areas, Dr White hopes to improve the quality of health care for Albertans and Canadians. She is also actively partnering with Alberta Health Services (AHS) on a multifaceted evaluation of Strategic Clinical Networks - a new governance intervention established by AHS for enhancing care across the continuum.

Dr. Bharwani is the Director for Public Policy and Strategic Partnerships with the Cumming School of Medicine, and the Lead for Public Policy at the O'Brien Institute for Public Health at the University of Calgary. He is a specialist in internal medicine with graduate training from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government in public policy and public administration. He has previously held Directorships for both the Medical Teaching Unit (in affiliation with W21C) and the Internal Medicine Residency Mentorship Programme while also actively serving as the Scientific Director for the Office of Leadership Development at the Cumming School of Medicine. He was a recent resident of the Venture Incubation Program at the Harvard Innovation Lab. In addition to annually winning teaching awards, he has been recognized for his leadership by two international societies (American College of Physicians and Society of General Internal Medicine). Dr. Bharwani remains an active community citizen, serving on a variety of community and corporate boards.

Barry Baylis, MD, graduated from the University of Calgary Medical School in 1983. He completed a post-graduate fellowship in Internal Medicine and in addition did a two-year fellowship in Endocrinology and Metabolism. He joined the faculty at the University of Calgary and the Foothills Medical Centre (FMC) in December 1989 as a founding member of the Division of General Internal Medicine. From 1989 onward he has contributed to undergraduate medical education, post-graduate medical education, and continuing medical education. He is also actively contributing to and has participated in clinical trials research at the FMC since 1990. His areas of research interest include: cardiovascular disease risk assessment and reduction, diabetes, diabetes in pregnancy, hypertension, lipid disorders, obesity, thrombophillia, and innovation in healthcare. As one of the founding leaders of W21C, he played a major role in the design of Unit 36 at FMC, and the creation of the W21C Living Laboratory. Dr. Baylis has been very active in fundraising for the initiative and has been heavily involved in its strategic direction as a member of its Executive Committee in his continued roll as a leader of the W21C. Dr. Baylis has an active interest in technology-based innovation, and has led work on fall prevention and location tracking in his time with W21C. He continues to mentor researchers through his participation in thesis committees for trainees associated with the W21C and serves on the W21C executive committee along with co-leads Ghali and Conly.

Born in Baie Comeau, Quebec, Dr Hogan's undergraduate and postgraduate medical education took place in Nova Scotia (Dalhousie University), Alberta (University of Alberta), and Ontario (University of Ottawa, University of Western Ontario). He is a physician trained in geriatrics, and a professor in the Departments of Medicine, Clinical Neurosciences, and Community Health Sciences in the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary. In addition to being a member of the AHS Seniors' Health Strategic Care Network Core Committee and Lead for Seniors' Health Research for W21C, Dr Hogan also holds the Brenda Strafford Foundation Chair in Geriatric Medicine and is Director of the Brenda Strafford Centre on Aging. He has served in a variety of national leadership roles relevant to his field of practice - Chair of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) Specialty Committee in Geriatric Medicine, Chief Examiner in Geriatric Medicine for the RCPSC, President of the Canadian Geriatrics Society, President of the C5R (a national network of dementia researchers), and editor of the Canadian Journal of Geriatrics (renamed the Canadian Geriatrics Journal). Dr Hogan has published over 200 peer-reviewed papers, and has earned several prestigious awards in his career including the 2010 CIHR Betty Havens Award for Knowledge Translation in Aging and the Irma M. Parhad Award for Excellence through the Consortium of Canadian Centres for Clinical Cognitive Research. From an educational standpoint, he has been instrumental in the development of an RCPSC-approved training program in geriatric medicine and is also active in undergraduate, postgraduate clinical, graduate sciences, and continuing professional development (CPD) education. Dr Hogan's primary research interest is in clinical aspects of aging with specific focus in cognitive impairment/dementia. Dr Hogan has a long-standing interest in creating systems of seamless care for seniors across the spectrum of health settings (i.e., home, primary and specialty care, hospitals, community-based care, assisted living/ long-term care facilities). He is also interested in the use of intelligent in-home technologies for vulnerable older patients.

Doyin is a dedicated healthcare professional with extensive knowledge and experience within the healthcare field. She obtained her MBBS degree from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. She practiced as a general practitioner for three years before relocating to Canada in 2020. She has designed and implemented various personalized treatment plans for people living with various medical conditions such as hypertension, heart failure, diabetes mellitus, asthma, malaria, sickle cell anaemia, meningitis and so on. She is also passionate about mental health awareness and advocacy. She has been an active participant of different community outreach programs in Sub-Saharan Africa aimed at educating people on the practices that will improve their general health. Prior to W21C, she worked on a Phase 4 clinical trial at the Mathison Centre for Mental Health Research and Education, University of Calgary. Doyin enjoys dancing, cooking and spending time with her family during her spare time.

Dr. Stelfox is Professor of Critical Care Medicine, Medicine and Community Health Sciences at the University of Calgary and Senior Medical Director of Alberta Health Services' Critical Care Strategic Clinical Network. He received his M.D. from the University of Alberta, Internal Medicine Residency at the University of Toronto, Ph.D. in Health Care Policy at Harvard University and Critical Care Fellowship at the Massachusetts General Hospital. His research program focuses on the application of health services research methods to evaluate and improve the quality of health care delivery to critically ill patients.

Dr. Jaime Kaufman, PhD, jointly leads the W21C Research and Innovation Centre with Jill de Grood. Together, Jaime and Jill support the strategic direction of the initiative, promoting W21C's value proposition as an organization dedicated to research, innovation, and education. They support day-to-day W21C operations and processes, and lead specific portfolios.
Jaime completed a PhD in Microbiology and Infectious Diseases from the University of Calgary, specializing in bacterial genetics, with additional post-doctoral research experience in large-scale data analysis for microbial community composition of the human microbiome.
She began her career in W21C as Program Manager for the W21C Collaborative Research and Innovation Opportunity (CRIO) team grant. In this role, she was responsible for a wide range of activities, including: grant management and reporting, resource allocation, hiring and performance management, and budget development and oversight. She then moved on to manage strategic programs for W21C, acting as a liaison with funding and implementation partners (federal and provincial government, industry, health sector, philanthropists, clinicians, and academics). Over the years Jaime has been involved in planning and development within the broader Research and Innovation Centre, working with W21C leadership to identify and develop strategic priorities, and to secure funding for the W21C and related initiatives.
As Director of Research and Innovation, Jaime's primary goal is to deepen and expand internal University of Calgary relationships and partnerships. She continues to align the W21C with the institutional programs and priorities of the University of Calgary as we pursue the path to becoming an entrepreneurial university ("Growth through Focus"). Jaime oversees the Communications portfolio. She also continues to manage frontline research staff and provides oversight for multiple research projects for internal and external stakeholders in academia, industry, and the public sector.
Dr. Jan Davies is a Professor of Anesthesia, Cumming School of Medicine, an Adjunct Professor of Psychology, Faculty of Arts, at the University of Calgary, and an anesthesiologist with Alberta Health Services in the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine, Calgary Zone. Dr. Davies has an MSc in Experimental Surgery from the University of Alberta, and an MD from the University of Calgary. She completed her Anesthesia training at Dalhousie University and a Killam Foundation Fellowship at the University of Manitoba, after which she joined the medical staff at the Foothills Medical Centre.
Since 1983 Dr. Davies has undertaken research in system safety, in healthcare and then in industry. She has been a consultant to, and testified in inquiries and inquests for, various Canadian provincial medical examiners and coroners. She has also been a consultant to a major Canadian airline, an Australian aviation safety organization, Health Canada, the Australian Department of Health and Ageing, the Canadian Patient Safety Institute, Alberta Health Services and the Health Quality Council of Alberta. In addition to numerous published peer-reviewed articles, editorials, book chapters, and a book and a website for patients about anesthesia, she has produced and/or co-written the scripts for several educational videos for anesthesiologists, and given many presentations on a variety of topics in both healthcare and aviation.
Her current healthcare research includes refinement of the methodology she first developed in the early 1980s to investigate events in which patients were nearly or actually harmed, and her methodology to review the actions of individuals involved in those same events. This methodology has also been used to analyze healthcare systems proactively, looking for hazards that can lead to harm. In addition, she is actively engaged in Human Factors research focused on healthcare equipment, particularly with respect to the standardization of anesthetic equipment in the Operating Room.
Her current aviation research is in crash survivability. She is the Chair of IBRACE, the International Board for Research into Aircraft Crash Events and has been a member of the Cabin Safety Group, International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). She and her fellow Board members contributed the evidence-based content and illustrations for the new recommendations for the aviation brace for impact positions for passengers and cabin crew, which now form Chapter 6 of the ICAO Manual on Information and Instructions for Passenger Safety (ICAO Doc 10086). She and other IBRACE members have also published peer-reviewed papers, one of which provides aviation crash investigators with two new aviation accident investigation questionnaires for passenger and crew survival factors and injuries, to assist them in their investigations of passenger and crew survivability. She is a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society.

Dr. Jane Lemaire is a Clinical Professor, Division of General Internal Medicine, and Vice Chair, Physician Wellness and Vitality, Department of Medicine at the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary. She and her research colleagues have passionately advocated for recognition of physician wellness as a quality indicator of healthcare systems, and a shared responsibility for physician wellness that lies with individual physicians, the medical profession, and healthcare systems. Dr. Lemaire received the 2016 Canadian Medical Association Misericordia Award for her contributions to physician wellness.
Dr. Lemaire is also the Director of Wellness at the Office of Professionalism, Equity, and Diversity, as well as the Wellness Lead at the W21C Research and Innovation Center, Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary. The W21C Wellness team has studied determinants of physician wellbeing, explored workplace nutrition on physician wellness, and studied the influence of coping strategies and personalities on physician wellness. Recent research explores how contextual factors within the complex healthcare work environment are linked to physician wellness, and patients' views on physician wellness and how it links to patient care. Dr. Lemaire is the physician lead of Well Doc Alberta.

Jeff Caird is a Professor in the Department of Psychology and an Adjunct Professor in the Departments Community Health Sciences at the University of Calgary. He received his PhD from the University of Minnesota in 1994 and a MS from the University of Colorado. He directs applied research activities in the Healthcare Human Factors and Simulation Laboratory in the W21C Research and Innovation Centre, which is affiliated with the O'Brien Institute of Public Health in the Cumming School of Medicine. He is a member of a number of university, national, international and professional committees including the National Academy of Sciences, Transportation Research Board. He has consulted for more than 50 corporations, governments and legal firms on human factors research, development, intellectual property and accident cases. His broad areas of research are in transportation and health care human factors. In particular, the design of devices, environments and systems that reduce injuries and fatalities, and improve the quality of life, are integral research goals.

Dr. John Conly is a Professor and former Head of the Department of Medicine at the University of Calgary and Alberta Health Services - Calgary and Area, Canada. He is medically trained as a specialist in infectious diseases, and is currently the Medical Director for W21C and a member of the Canadian Expert Advisory Group on Antimicrobial Resistance. He is a past President of the Canadian Infectious Disease Society, past Chairman of the Board for the Canadian Committee on Antibiotic Resistance, past Co-Director for the Snyder Institute for Chronic Diseases at the University of Calgary, a previous Vice Chair for the Canadian Expert Drug Advisory Committee, and a previous member of the WHO Advisory Group on Integrated Surveillance of Antimicrobial Resistance. He has published over 300 papers and has received multiple career honours in teaching, research, mentorship, innovation and service, including the Ronald Christie Award for outstanding contributions to academic medicine in Canada, the Medal for Distinguished Service from the Alberta Medical Association for outstanding personal contributions to the medical profession and the Order of Canada. He continues as an active consultant in clinical infectious diseases with current interests which focus on antimicrobial resistance and stewardship, prevention of hospital-acquired infections and novel innovations in healthcare.

Dr. Scott Kraft, MD, is the academic lead for digital health at the W21C Research and Innovation Centre. He also founded and directs SPARK Calgary, which aims to bring University of Calgary Digital Health innovations into clinical practice.
Dr. Kraft received his MD at the University of Saskatchewan and completed his neurology training at Memorial University of Newfoundland where he also received a Master of Sciences in Clinical Epidemiology. His career has focused on the design and implementation of digital tools to enhance clinical outcomes and clinician efficiency. His clinical practice concentrates on Parkinson's disease and other Movement Disorders.

Eryn has a passion for healthcare innovation and addressing challenges in healthcare. She holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree in biomedical engineering with a minor in psychology from the University of Victoria. Through her studies, Eryn gained exposure to human factors and usability principles, which led to her interest in optimizing user experiences in medical device design. Eryn's diverse career experience includes working in consumer product development, conducting research in microfluidics, and contributing to the R&D of a medical rehabilitation device involving a brain-computer interface. Eryn's research interests lies in the relationship between psychology, healthcare, and engineering. She values collaborative interdisciplinary environments, recognizing them as catalysts for developing solutions that best meet user needs. When she is not at work, you will find Eryn exploring the great outdoors through hiking, camping, and biking. You might also find her kicking a soccer ball as she has a lifelong passion for soccer and played for the UVic Vikes varsity women's soccer team throughout university.

Jennifer Cowles is the care coordinator RN at the General Internal Medical Teaching Unit (MTU) at the Calgary Foothills Hospital. Her practice areas have included general medicine, rehabilitation units, and a brief stint on a women's surgical unit.
Passionate about working with general internal medicine populations, chronic diseases, and discharge planning, Jennifer's goals include collaboratively improving the discharge planning process. She is also interested in exploring innovative health technology to help bridge discharge processes as well as developing community partnerships. This interest brought her to W21C, where she engages with the research on Unit 36 and supports W21C research team members.
Jennifer came to Calgary in 1998 following the completion a diploma in nursing in 1993 and her BSc in 1999 at the University College of the Cariboo in Kamloops, British Columbia. She spent five years working at the Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops before joining the MTU at the Calgary Foothills Hospital, and in 2002 she became the care coordinator RN. Functioning in a long-standing position as the MTU RN, Jennifer has created many relationships throughout the hospital with a goal to collaborate and provide flexible approaches to the patient care processes in discharge planning. Jennifer works in a multidisciplinary manner with patients and family, nurses, allied health teams, residents, and community clinics to improve care coordination for the patient through the admission to discharge process.
Jennifer is currently completing a master's of health studies through an online program at Athabasca University.

Jill de Grood jointly leads the W21C Research and Innovation Centre with Dr. Jaime Kaufman, PhD. Together, Jill and Jaime support the strategic direction of the initiative, promoting W21C's value proposition as an organization dedicated to research, innovation, and education. They support day-to-day W21C operations and processes, and lead specific portfolios.
Jill completed her Master's degree in Sociology at the University of Calgary. Her thesis project examined factors impacting lawyer's physical and mental health. She completed a Certificate in Professional Management in 2015 and received her Project Management Professional Certification in 2018.
Jill has been in an evolving leadership role with W21C for more than nine years, and became Director of the Centre in 2013. Over the years, Jill has led and been involved in numerous industry partner projects in areas such as technology assessment, infection prevention and control, and examining the effectiveness and impact of health care innovations for patient care. Jill is a published author with fourteen journal publications along with a number of knowledge translation pieces.
As Director of Development and Partnerships, Jill continues to bring a strategic perspective to the W21C, to solve challenges and identify opportunities for the Centre. Jill is responsible for establishing and enhancing new and existing community partnerships with government and external organizations. Jill oversees the clinical trials and human factors teams in conjunction with Michelle Wright. She is also accountable for externally focused innovation support programs like SPARK Calgary.

Jocelyn received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from UBC in 2002. Her experience includes working on Unit 36, the Ward of the 21st Century at Foothills Medical Centre since 2006. As an RN and then as a Nurse Clinician, Jocelyn has a passion for Internal Medicine along with the fast pace and acuity that the Medical Teaching Unit provides. Previous experience includes 3 years as a Registered Nurse on an acute care unit in Kelowna, B.C. providing pre and post surgical care to thoracic, general and vascular surgery patients. After over a decade spent in a clinical research setting, and participating in countless quality improvement initiatives, Jocelyn decided to pursue a more significant role in research. Aspiring to improve the quality of care patients receive, Jocelyn recently joined W21C as Research Nurse Unit Champion with the Serious Illness Conversation program led by Dr Jessica Simon. When not at work Jocelyn enjoys travelling and spending time with her family.

Kat has earned a Bachelor of Kinesiology, Mind Sciences from the University of Calgary and a Masters of Science, Systems Design & Social Marketing from the University of Victoria. Prior to her career at W21C, Kat has worked across public, private and government leading innovation, knowledge translation and social change initiatives. She has held positions with J5 Design as a Senior Designer, with AHS as a Health Promotion Facilitator II specializing in early childhood development & maternal health, and is the principal of her own Social Change Strategy consultancy.
